Bruce - that sounds like a good combination. Especially if they premiere Gossip Girl in the fall, so viewers can get hooked before American Idol returns in the winter/spring.
In my opinion, one of the reasons the CW is trying to keep Gilmore Girls so badly is because they already know that VM is goner, and they don't want to completely retool their Tuesday lineup. Now I am not a VM basher, but I've watched the show before and it's just not a series that I find enticing. Regardless, though, ratings this low are completely inexcusable.
If both GG and VM go, 7th Heaven will amost definitely stay. The CW cannot afford to start fresh on BOTH Sundays and Tuesdays. And from the looks of things, it seems that Tuesdays next season will be brand new. If Alexis Bledel really wanted back in next year, she would've signed on by now. I'm not saying the show still can't be renewed but I'm starting to get more pesimisstic as the weeks go by. Shooting for GG ends next month, so they'd better hurry up and decide.
am i the only one annoyed that marc keeps putting underrated for NCIS. WE ALL KNOW IT GETS GREAT RATINGS. It isn't a secret at all. There is no need to put underrated anymore
Originally posted by Paul Ketz: Lost Hero's logic is flawed, as neither 7th Heaven nor Gilmore Girls pulls in under 3 million viewers for a non-repeat episode. Any show that pulls in less than 2.5 million viewers (or even 3 million viewers) should be on the chopping block.
There are shows on basic cable that are pulling in those types of numbers. If the shows on the CW can't hack it, they need to be let go. The CW network isn't a charity, it needs to show some growth in the ratings and profit.
You misunderstood me Paul. Even being a fan of VM, I meant it's silly for CW to keep VM, especially if it has a chance for at least another year's worth of 7H and GG.
While i wouldn't stab Pisher or Paul Ketz in the back, I must say I'm very disappointed with VM's #s. It is still a fave of mine. But I've said umpteen times, from a BUSINESS pointa view, VM shoulda gone out with the creation of CW while Everwood shoulda been retained.
Such is life at the CW. That's why it'll remain a network-ette, if it remains at all after another season or so.
Personally, I think GG and 7th could survive another season. Most of the cast of each show is willing to come back and they're so well beyond their prime that if loyal fans disliked the series, they would've abandoned them by now. Comparatively, both shows could make it one more year if need be. Including money-wise. Both are costly, but still manageable if the CW cannot find enough shows in development.

Oh... who am I kidding? That's just bad. Even worse than normal.
I'm quoting this for posterity, seeing as it might very well be the only sensible post Lost Hero will ever make on the subject. Posts like this that come from fanboys are liable to disappear at a moment's notice (such as the instant the next online petition pops up...)
-- "Better Off Ted," Wednesdays at some time or another at some point or another in the near future. Because we can't all live in mansions and not ever work like the people on "Modern Family."
Everwood should've never been chosen over VM. I believe this only happened because the head of the CW was from UPN. Not that the WB prez like Everwood, either, but renewing VM was a waste. It's almost a guarantee that Everwood (even though it was the oldest skewing show) would've had general viewership much higher than VM.

Anyone know why CBS is still touting NCIS as Tuesday's #1 show?
Wow, that's a season low for VM if I'm not mistaken. As much as I love the show, it needs to go. I don't think I'll even bother looking at the ratings when it goes up against AI in a couple weeks.
Because of all of the impact that other cw/wb/UPN/MyNetwork/NBC/CBS/ABC shows have historically had on American Idol?

7th Heaven should stay for one more season in order to serve as an anchor for the Sunday line-up; to help reinvigorate the Sunday line-up and provide lead-in support for Veronica Mars. Renewed for 13 episodes.
Veronica Mars should come back to either sink or swim; to help revive the Sunday line-up. Possible new night/time may help, Tuesdays aren't working out. Renewed for 13 episodes.
Hidden Palms should return for a second season because it is actually worthy of being a cult favorite or even a possible breakthrough hit.
Monday Night Comedies should either abandon the UPN tradition of an ""all urban comedy night" or offer more of a variety of comedies; possibly Everybody Hates Chris (all ready renewed), All of Us (the 2nd currently most-watched show on the Monday line-up), and two new white comedies or other racial-based comedies = provides more variety to help rid of the lackluster of the Monday line-up. Comedies renewed for a full standard season.
Supernatural should go back to its roots, Tuesday night, where it was more successful. The show has a broad future (creatively) and should be a test as to anchor the Tuesday night; needs to gain more of an audience which the Thursday night 9 o'clock deathslot does not provide.
Americas Next Top Model has no need to explain, most watched show on the network. Renewed for its standard two cycles a season.
Beauty and the Geek has remained on stable grounds (ratings-wise) against its competion (known as American Idol). Renewed for midseason, a full season (8 epi.)
One Tree Hill should comeback; has an original and creative idea for a fifth season and has bounced back from it ratings slump. Not to mention the show has been a superpowered-duo w/ Americas Next Top Model; most successful post-ANTM program. Has been a strong competitor against its competition (known as Lost & American Idol), there really isn't any show that can overcome American Idol. Renewed for a full standard season.
Smallville has no need for an explanation; has been a great anchor to the Thursday night. Renewed for a full standard season. Possible last season [as stated by writers]
WWE is probably going to return; or unless The CW gets daring and opens two-hour block for new programming (dramas). Renewed for a full standard season
New Dramas, The CW should start with two new dramas; not being too daring and getting over their heads with new programming, until they have a successful original show. 13 episodes to start.
Possibly an Encore Presentation on the Thursday 9 o'clock timeslot if a new program doesn't work against the difficult timeslot.
Gilmore Girls if possible, sounds unlikely for renewal at this time; the cast's contracts need to be renewed and the show has dipped [creatively].
The CW can't really afford to get rid of both 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls, since they have been both flagship programs and anchors to there specified nights.
New Midseason programming should be a standard; throw in new shows while The CW's current programs are on hiatus.
Since I hate both low-rated piece of crap pet projects and dumb network robots who keep low-rated piece of crap pet projects on the air well past their expiration dates, I look forward to the looming ejection of both VM and DO
What is "DO"? If you're referring to Dawn Ostroff, the preferred label is "Dawn" because she's a person
Those numbers are terrible, but your logic above seems to say that all low-rated things must be cancelled (which they eventually will be, this is a business after all), and that the only good things are the ones which are popular (again, true from a business perspective). Thank goodness for network executives who DO have passion projects and keep them on as long as they do despite low ratings. Some explode into cultural phenomena. Some don't.
Next week's ratings for VM will go up because the promo had Veronica getting arrested. Though I suspect Gilmore Girls will be down because, after all the rumblings about Lorelai going back to Luke, even with Christopher being a complete and cliche romantic comedy a-hole, she's trying to stick by him.
HOW AWESOME WAS KELLY BISHOP LAST NIGHT!? I know it'll never happen, but... EMMY NOMINATION, PLEASE! It's amazing how much the presence of Emily Gilmore adds to the show, and it has been missed this year with her sporadic appearances.
Also, it seems like the 8pm hour, with NCIS/Idol, is as big a two-network one-two punch as the Grey's/CSI hour in both viewers and demo. Weird that we don't hear anything about NCIS!
I found House's episode merely so-so.
Looking forward to seeing if Criminal Minds finds new regular viewers (or at least people who cared enough about the cliffhanger to come back to see the end of the two-parter) thanks to the Super Bowl despite airing against Idol.
