-Yesterday’s Winners: Survivor: Gabon (CBS), CSI (CBS), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008 (ABC)
-Honorable Mention: The Office (NBC)
-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats): My Name is Earl (NBC), Kath & Kim (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Ignited by annual special Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008, ABC regained control of Thursday among adults 18-49, with an eight percentage over CBS in the demo. CBS was the most-watched network, but its advantage over ABC was diminished.
CBS’ veteran Survivor: Gabon won the 8 p.m. hour, with 12.79 million viewers and a 4.0 rating/11 share among adults 18-49. But compared to the year-ago edition set in China (Viewers: 13.86 million; A18-49: 4.5/12 on Dec. 6, 2007), that was down by 1.07 million viewers and 11 percent in the demo. Even so, this is still a winning performance.
Second at 8 p.m. was ABC’s Ugly Betty (Viewers: 8.47 million; A18-49: 2.6/ 7, followed by NBC sitcoms My Name is Earl (Viewers: #3, 6.08 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.5/ 7) and Kath & Kim (Viewers: #3, 4.88 million; A18-49: #3, 2.2/ 6), which continues to lose steam despite the higher HUT levels at 8:30 p.m. As long as NBC just trimmed the episode order for Knight Rider, why not use the scissors on the abysmal Kath & Kim? Do we really need 22-episodes? Fourth in the hour was a repeat of Fox’s uneventful Kitchen Nightmares (Viewers: 3.75 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 4), followed by a repeat of the CW’s Smallville (Viewers: 2.29 million; A18-49: 0.8/ 2). Get used to the word repeat…its December.
Dominance was mixed at 10 p.m. between CBS’ CSI and Grey’s Anatomy on ABC as follows:
Grey’s Anatomy (ABC) Viewers: 15.15 million (#2), A18-49: 5.5/14 (#1)
Although NBC’s competing The Office got some mileage with 8.33 million viewers and a 4.3/11 among adults 18-49 in the 9 p.m. half hour (a considerable improvement over lead-in Kath & Kim), lead-out 30 Rock dipped to 7.14 million viewers and a 3.4/ 8 in the demo at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention for 30 Rock out of The Office was just 79 percent in the demo.
Rounding off the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (Viewers: #4, 4.08 million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 5) and a repeat of the CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.01 million; A18-49: #5, 0.8/ 2).
ABC had sole dominance at 10 p.m. care of Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2008 at a solid 13.21 million viewers and a 4.2/11 in the demo. Comparably, that was right on par with the year-ago performance (Viewers: 11.31 million; A18-49: 4.4/12 on Dec. 6, 2007). Just curious…what did Tom Cruise do this year that was so fascinating?
Also at 10 p.m. was CBS’ Eleventh Hour (Viewers: #2, 10.91 million; A18-49: #3, 2.7/ 7), which will be replaced by upcoming drama Harper’s Island on April 9, and NBC’s soon-to-conclude ER (Viewers: #3, 8.22 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/ 9). As announced yesterday, upcoming Ian McShane drama Kings will move into ER’s time period on March 12.
The OFFICE deserves nods for continued 18-49 dominance compared to its total viewer rating.
K&K is dipping, but NBC is really hoping this one will grow like 30Rock/The Office both did (each of those took several episodes to really find an audience). The fact that it's marginally better than the first couple of episodes doesn't hurt, but the show still isn't really that funny. They need to do a bit of an overhaul if they want this to work. Blair/Shannon work but the other two leads are just dreadfully written characters and are not funny. It does average demos for NBC at this point, which is what will get it to 22 episodes.
As for Cruise? He appeared attractive on a lot of magazine covers... I guess that's fascinating... I guess...
Great episode of SURVIVOR last night. Clearly earning its 12 million viewers by showing Ken,the mastermind being played by yet another fake idol made by walking craft store Bob, Matty umasked as a PWed boyfriend as he tearfully chokes out a proposal he may or may not consider a wise move when he gets back to civilization and an appearance by Ken's extremely cute sister and other family members of the tribe.

It looks like both NCIS and The Mentalist will beat an original CSI in viewers this week. Perhaps CBS will now have to start advertising Laurence Fishburn joining the #3 show on television. LOL!

I think this is one of Survivor's best seasons to-date.

Like I've written before, it's a smart move for NBC to air "The Office" after Super Bowl XLIII.

It seems that with most episodes within the entire series of "Survivor", you just can't go wrong. I loved last night too, although A.C., now I know the type of woman you're looking for! A little more information than we needed to know, huh? (Just kidding!) However, Ken has got to watch his back now that he cast that stray Matty vote, but I'm rooting for Ken to win this whole thing. Matty PWed? No, that proposal was due to the lack of food & drink then, but let's be honest: his girlfriend was smokin' hot. If I hadn't eaten for 33 days, I'd have proposed to her, Sugar, Crystal AND Karen-Allen lookalike Corinne!
Bob should become the new immunity idol maker on "Survivor" from now on! Or if not, maybe he can be a host on some arts & crafts cable TV show. Very creative despite the limited resource of materials out there in Gabon.
As for the forum's Survivor game, events have been very entertaining to watch, with this week being no exception.

Great for Survivor I have been loving this season. These past 2 seasons have been the best to date. They are on a roll.
I expected more for CSI on par with NCIS with it going into Lawrence joining next week. GA goes down all the bad media attention & ghost plot catching up to it?

LOL and good points on the different motivations that drove Matty to his proposal!

Good point, but CBS can't be too sad about that. Rather it is probably happy The Mentalist has become such a hit so fast.

Originally posted by Marc Berman: Comparably, retention for 30 Rock out of The Office was just 79 percent in the demo.
If Worst Week kept 79% of 2.5 Men demo, Samantha Who? kept 79% of DWTS demo, Life on Mars kept 79% of Grey's demo, Brothers and Sisters kept 79% of Housewives demo, or Fringe kept 79% of House's demo, than they would all be labeled successes.
Why are you spinning this as a bad thing?
Last airing demo retention:
Fringe> 74.0% of House Samantha Who?> 66.6% of DWTS Brothers & Sisters> 62.5 % of DH Worst Week> 62.2% of 2.5 Men Life On Mars> 41.9% of Greys
The only show that comes close to 30 Rock's retentino here is Fringe. And it is in a much higher HUT level, whereas 30 Rock does not have that benefit.
What would be an acceptable retention rate for 30 Rock in your opinion? Or are you like Pisher, and believe that 30 Rock will be an overrated and underperforming show until it grows on The Office's numbers?
Originally posted by robert: CSI looks in trouble. GA still does well given how stupid the show has become
Trouble? CSI will last at least as many seasons as NBC's E.R.
GA won't even come close to lasting as long as E.R. but it still does hold on to that 15-million viewer range. I too get the sense that GA needs an infusion of more creative and clever storylines. Now that "Boston Legal" will be done on Monday, maybe David E. Kelley can go back to his "Chicago Hope" roots and take over the reins of the characters at Seattle Grace Hospital (a.k.a. "T&A" Hospital)!
