Grey got back both Izzie and Meredith yesterday and couldn't even crack the 15 million.

The Mantalist beats PP by 5 to 6 million every week and basicallyhave the same demos, but because PP beats it by .4 in the demo, it beats it handily even though TM had 5 million more viewers?

In what world?

Sorry, cherry... in THIS world.

You can't always determine the success of a program by the number of viewers.

Numbers and The Ghost Whisperer will often beat The Office in total viewers. Which is considered the more "successful" program?

I'm sure advertisers are beating down the doors of the Three Rivers people, because, hell, they have 2-3 million more viewers weekly than 30 Rock, right?

Wrong.

Private Practice beating The Mentalist in the demo is a pretty big deal. No one ever said it "handily beat" anyone... but when a third-year show that many people had pretty much given up on, is winning the time period in the 18-49 demo over the breakout hit of ANY network last year that got the lead-out spot for the top drama of the decade... yea, its an accomplishment.

While Fringe remains one of the most DVR’d shows in primetime, retention of out of the second half of lead-in Bones (Viewers: 10.13 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 8) was only 59 percent in total viewers and 73 percent in the demo.

Well that's pretty awful--but hey, at least it's not 58% in viewers and 68% in the demo. Against competition a lot tougher than Castle could ever survive. Mushu. Wink

Actually, I bet Castle would hold more of the lead in since its very similar to Bones. :P Wink
Yea, Keep dreaming Mushu. Roll Eyes

On to (for me) some secondary subjects:

Not a single comment yet to my knowledge on FlashForward, you know, that increasingly invisible heavily hyped can't miss serial that, having watched it, has turned into "serial sausage." Last nite had a card game. I think I'm folding. I look for a damaging, probably lethal ratings drop when the show breaks for the holidays.

Bones - this show can compete in tough hours and pick up the pieces when the other nets falter in the weaker hours. Albeit at a modest level of ratings, this show has taken on the characteristic of the L&O's and some of CBS's better bigger crime shows, namely, that in the absence of something stronger in the hour, viewers find it an acceptable default choice.

Private Practice - I've started opting for the Leno monolouge instead. This show has too many lousy characters and too much bad acting, yet it is actually one of the minor surprises of the year ratings wise. Before you know it, 5 years will have gone by, and it will just be there, spooning it in from Grey's. But then again that's all they wanted for this hour and they sure did spend alot of dough finding a show that could do it.

I think we have started seeing a new Trend.
Using a High profile, established show does not attract many additional viewers. Opinions on those shows have been established, so additional sampling is not being made. This could be why CBS has not announced what is to follow the SB. It may not be sure which direction to take.

- Help an Big series get Bigger
- Promote a current, "above average" series
- Launch a brand new series.

I agree. Community, until last night, had been trending upward at 8pm. after 3.5 seasons, 30 Rock should be a lead in series, not a lead out benefiting from a larger lead in.

Isn't it ironic how the NBC Thursday comedies are so incompatible with Leno despite both being comedies? I have to wonder if a traditional family comedy would provide the best lead in for Jay. Wink

I think Leno is showing that it is only watched if NOTHING else is on. That is why it does OK, at best, on Tuesdays, but sucks on the other nights. Now, if Lenno could be moved to Wednesdays at 8pm......

NBC hasn't had a family comedy in years - they abandoned that genre in the 90's with their urban, adult blockbusters like Frasier, Friends and Seinfeld. Though wouldn't most family show viewers (kids and parents) not stay up to watch Jay, let alone 9:30?

Just a small correction to your post mark.

Umm... Kitchen Confidential aired in 2005. What was the ACTUAL year-ago information from last year?

It makes me wonder how much CSI/CBS was using this crossover to also gauge Fishburne's clout in attracting viewers, and how this will affect any contract negotiations. In the back of their minds they have to be thinking ahead to next season. And I think all the CSI actors' contracts, including Fishburne's, are up at the end of this season. Since it was all him doing this crossover, what do these numbers really mean for him, and his ability to earn his high salary? I don't know; just throwing it out there. I don't know how much of a rating's bump they were expecting; it was getting an awful lot of promotion in every media outlet possible.
I have always wondered if they really needed LF. Or could they get these numbers without him? Has it become, 'it seemed like a good idea at the time'?

I'm kind of surprised at The Mentalist's numbers. Some here thought CSI was bringing its ratings down this season. Maybe not. I just think it peaked last year, and now it is realizing its long term potential. I don't see alot of growth there. But then I grew tired of it last season, and have only watched a couple of episodes this season, so I may be projecting.

The difference with "The Good Wife" and "Private Practice" is that TGW won its timeslot in viewers and demos, PP didn't.

and wow with The Vampire Diaries, only .1 behind the NBC comedies Eeker

Retention out of Greys was less then 70%, that's probably why it didn't make the winners list, that and it lost in viewers for the hour by a lot.

And the Good Wife loses tons of its lead in each week yet Marc declares that a winner with LOTS less demo viewers. Private Practice was the winner of its hour last night. Demos are all that matter. PERIOD. Even CBS can't sell a program based on total viewers, regardless of how much their PR staff would like you to believe that. 25-54s, yes. Total Viewers, no. Also I wouldn't call CSI a winner either. A 4.0 demo is all that show can muster these days? It really is gone then in that sense. It used to be competing and sometimes beating Greys in the demo. Now the Office is tying it (and probably beating it in half hour ratings).

On another note, I would say the Vampire Diaries is a winner last night for the netlet standards. Survivor easily should be a winner with CSI, the Mentalist, the Office, and Bones all being honorable mentions.

All I can say is Russell is the new Rupert.

C'mon Marc. I know Rupert was popular and all, but the man was a total moron. Russell would eat him alive. I'm not even a huge Russell fan, but his game skills leave Rupert in the dust.

I think the BBT writers should have Sheldon comment on this outrage. Mad

I'm waiting for BBT to get Nimoy on the show. After Sheldon's reaction to the Nimoy Napkin last Christmas I want to see his reaction to actually meeting the man in person. LOL

In regards to Fringe, I really want it to move to another night...maybe then SPN will have a shot at better numbers.

30 Rock will win more emmys, no doubt. But I think Modern Family may actually get the win for best comedy. ABC hasn't won best comedy in years, so they may put a lot of promotion behind the Emmy campaign. That is if the Emmys don't reward the Big Bang Theory a season too late.

If Glee keeps it up, it's going to be in contention come Emmy time too. I'm a 30 Rock fan, but even I think it's time as awards darling may be at an end.

Well Played Russell…well played.

Speaking of SURVIVOR-this weeks PEOPLE came into our office today. Season 3 winner Ethan Zohn’s tough battle with cancer doesn’t look encouraging. Life can be so unfair-here we have a million dollar winner dating a beautiful million dollar winner from the SAME show (Jenna Morasco) and still he gets cancer. Best wishes to Ethan and all of us should…count our own blessings.

Didn't Jenna's mother die from Cancer?

Yes the PEOPLE article does reference this terrible coincidence.
