60 Minutes is the lone saving grace of CBS News....no way should they risk messing that up even if they do have a couple of awkward hours of primetime flow.

If anything, they should shift TAR to 9, make it a 2 hour show (like The Bachelor, Celebrity Apprentice, DWTS, etc.) and pick which drama they want to try at 8. That would provide better "flow" and probably increase the demo and viewer # for the whole night.

I believe you have mentioned CBS moving "60 Minutes" to Saturday before, but that is likely a pipe dream. Comparing the venerable newsmagazine to the defunct soap "Guiding Light" is comparing apples and oranges...they are two entirely different situations. For starters, "Light" was the lowest rated daytime serial at the time of its cancellation and had showed no significant improvement in the ratings. "60 Minutes" is far from low rated (albeit among total viewers) and remains one of CBS's highest rated series.

You may not be surprised to have CBS move "Minutes" to Saturday next season, but virtually everyone else would be. I would tend to agree with the original comments. Although I won't be so brash as to say it will "never" happen, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

...and 60 Min. is one of CBS' lowest demo-performing shows (when there's not overrun) especially in relation to its viewer total...and it's leading into the only saving grace they have on Sunday nights. I understand it's an institution (although so was Guiding Light). But all things come to an end, and I'm not even calling for 60 Min. to be canceled. I just think it'll be utilized better on a lower-profile night where it could actually potentially be the top viewer and demo show on the night.

CBS could even try some special 60 Min. episodes on Sat. nights in order to gauge audience interest. If it's halfway successful, I think it should be moved there.

Focusing only on the 18-49 demo misses what value CBS sees in the show.

It has performed at this level, relative to other shows, for quitre a while. They obviously find success with it at the 7pm slot.

A two hour edition of TAR could work, but I would put a couple of Sitcoms in the 8pm hour.

The Night needs a common flow to the night. As it is they have 3-4 different audience types that don't completely cross over with each other.

60 Minutes is actually a fairly stable show for the timeslot it airs in...aside from sports, there aren't any regularly scheduled shows that are routinely getting over a 2.5 demo in this slot.

For anyone who thinks it should move to Saturdays, what would it be replaced with? And then what will happen once the replacement fails?

TAR is in no way as stable as 60 Minutes and there's no reason to be reassembling the night for a show that may very well go out of style in the near future....

I absolutely agree that there's been success, but it's solely in viewership. 60 Min. is a failure at demo performance. The latest episodes of Community and Parks and Recreation got .1 less in the demo than 60 Minutes and they were able to achieve that with 60% fewer viewers. I think I recall when 60 Min. used to average about 16 million viewers, it would average a 3.0+ in the demo. Now that it's averaging about 12 million, it's getting less than a 2.5. What if it declines to 10 million? Would CBS be happy with less than a 2.0 in the demo? a 1.5? What's the stopping point?

I just think there comes a point where CBS should not pass up the demo (and viewer) beast football is leading into primetime vs. the oldest-skewing show on television leading into it. Like I said, it can't hurt to try some specials on Saturday and see if they work.

I don't understand why it is believed that sitcoms are somehow the answer for this night....CBS sitcoms are getting 7 million viewers & 2.0 demos in a very noncompetitive hour of primetime....I don't know why it's believed they would be fit to help out on this night against animation domination, EMHE, and on nights where they're delayed against - gulp - Desperate Housewives!

Sundays are nights where you need to be able to compete against a lot of specials & award shows...sitcoms just aren't durable enough for that right now.

CBS tried something like this a few years back. It was called 60 Minutes II. it lasted just a few years and was canceled because of low ratings.

Fox has lost Microsoft as the exclusive sponsor of its upcoming "Family Guy" variety show special after the software company's executives watched the show's taping.

Here's a statement from Microsoft:
"We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humor of 'Family Guy,' but after reviewing an early version of the variety show it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand. We continue to have a good partnership with Fox, Seth MacFarlane and Alex Borstein and are working with them in other areas. We continue to believe in the value of brand integrations and partnerships between brands, media companies and talent."

Fox plans to move forward with another integrated sponsor, though its unclear how this will work since the network has already taped the special before a live audience, complete with Windows 7-related humor.

Didn't see that coming.

L&O: CI and In Plain Sight showed declines this year. And Psych has dipped below 4 million. So there is variations of successes within the network.

USA Network is not immune to making failed attempts and I don't think it's as easy of just adapting the USA Network model to networks to fix their declines.

The USA brand applies not only to the originals but also the repeats, NCIS and House fits the USA brand like a glove. Even the other cable networks have copied USA to an extent. TNT has tried applying its We Know Drama brand to its drama with mixed results with only The Closer and Leverage being the break out hits, FX have built their reputation edgy content akin to HBO and Showtime, AMC are building a reputation for cinematic quality dramas which may not be ratings smashes but win awards and praises and A&E which so far hasn't built its scripted fare yet is now known for its unscripted shows.

I don't think there is any way that CBS would move 60 minutes. That show will probably outlive most of us who post in this forum.

I see TAR as the flow problem. CBS needs a drama with a strong, older male lead, to bridge the gap between 60 Minutes and the procedurals that will follow it. Something like The District. Failing that, maybe they have some more of those Tom Selleck movies. Wink

TAR would do well to follow Survivor on Thursday nights, bumping CSI back to 10 pm and allowing The Mentalist to replace Three Rivers on Sunday.

1) Comedies would be counter programming. Not all comedy lovers like the Animation block
2) Flexability witht he NFL run overs
3) Sitcoms usually do well to bridge between hours. It would be good leading out of 60 Minutes and then could flow into either a coupeple of dramas or TAR.
4) Sometimes all a show needs is the right night. Seifeld was a good hit before it moved to Thursdays. Once there,it became the SMASH hit we all came to love.

The Specials and Awards shows only go so far. Some do Well, other tank.
It has not been that long ago that the 3 networks all use to have Movies on Saturday Nights (8-11) and schedule those specials and Awards Shows.

The Jesse Stone films do very well but they skew ancient which is probably why CBS has never thought of turning into a series although another reason is that Tom Selleck cannot commit to filming in Nova Scotia for a long period of time.

The Mentalist is unlikely to move to Sundays, I reckon CBS would test out new shows either dramas or reality for 9-11pm first but against football, Animation Domination and DH/B&S they don't have a chance and considering they do well Monday-Friday, Sunday's poor performance is puzzling.

WOW!
I think that would KILL all 3 shows (TAR, CSI, TM)

CBS Sundays is now to the point that it needs to be scrapped. Moving anything to they night would just be patchwork. CC needs to go, 3 Rivers axed and TAR moved.

A good flow to the night could be
7pm - 60 minutes
8pm - Comedies
9pm - Variety Show (Ed sullivan style)
10pm - TAR
