Hi... of course I don't know the budget for all of their shows, but I know enough to make an educated guess. OTH is filmed in North Carolina where the state has basically thrown incentives at them to stay there. GG is filmed in NYC -- not as cheap. OTH has a large cast, but according to several web resources has cut cast members this year, and has never had to re-negotiate with the kids precisely because the show has never been a huge hit. It's also fairly well documented that OTH is in bed with major corporations that basically pay for the show's yearly budget off of advertising $ alone (I believe it's Sunkist and AT&T/Cingular). OTH also does well in the DVD, soundtrack, and even clothing franchises that it has spun-off.
Look, I'm not claiming that OTH is the answer to The CW problems. Far from it. But based on GG premiere numbers and the quality of the pilot (which is subjective obviously), I think that 1-2 seasons more of OTH would be a better investment than pouring all of their money into a teen genre duplicate that is arguably more expensive. No one is saying that OTH did amazing last year, only that GG looks on course to do the same kind of numbers after receiving massive amounts of promotion -- that's bad news for The CW no matter how you cut it.
Its good to be back! What a fun time of year for all of us crazy ratings-obsessed folks.
Quick takes...
Gossip Girl is dead.
CBS has to be disappointed w/ Kid Nation... they were hoping that curiosity would cause this to break-out - it didn't happen, and although the rise in viewers over the course of the show has to be encouraging... I don't see this becoming a big hit (and given the current controversy... I also don't see how they can pull-off another edition of it as well.)
On the flip side, I think ABC has to be overjoyed at KN's modest performance, as it bodes well for Pushing Daisies. By the time it premieres in 2 weeks, ABC will have promoted the hell out of it, and with no big threat (DonD will not rise in viewership, and I doubt Back to You will either...) I'm thinking it will get sampled quite well.
The big question for me is still PP vs. BW. I still think CM will rule 9pm. I just don't know if people are going to buy into PP for some reason (and this comes from a big GA and Kate Walsh fan). Apparently the official pilot is better than the extended GA episode last May - but is it enough to make this work?
BW will get A LOT of curious first-timers. I sense a huge battle brewing next week.
Back to You- There has not been one sitcom that I've wanted to see since Friends ended. This one I actually wanted to sample. It was funny and it seems there will be a recurring story line with the daughter.
GG- The story line wasn't original in any way. But at least they hired actors who can act (as opposed to the OC main characters). I'll watch a few more episodes, but something "water coolerish" has to happen.
I have a class to get to, but this has been way more interesting. Glad that the new season is finally starting for all of us ratings-crazies! Thanks for all the info Marc!
I'm sure I'm not the first one to notice this, but there are a LOT of characters named Chuck this TV season. The lead in Back to You, the bad guy in Gossip Girl, and the girl on Pushing Daisies, plus the dude in that Mon 8pm show on NBC, whatever it's called.
Is "Chuck" really that common of a name? Seems interesting that it's popping up all over the place.

Um...why do that? Just wondering?
Peace!
I think B&tG would do well at 9pm. I also think it would be good counter programming against CSI and Grey's Anatomy.
I don't buy into the belief that B&tG and Reaper make a good pair. Reaper and Supernatural might not be any better, but the move would put Reaper into the 8pm slot and Supernatural on Tuesday at 9pm...not a bad spot for it.
Any word of mouth for Gossip Girl is going to be "meh." I wouldn't expect it to grow much if at all from word of mouth, especially not with Private Practice premiering next week. Teeny bopper girls love that Grey's Anatomy-ish type crapola. If GG didn't have the lead in it does, it would have fared even worse.
Wow. Did anyone on here actually enjoy Gossip Girl? I really loved it, and am quite upset about the numbers. I hope it lasts. I thought it was a good show with solid acting and writing, and I was really invested in the characters. I hope I am totally alone on this.

Audience levels for the 8pm time period haven't (hopefully) peaked yet, so the competition is still wide open. Next week will feature the first results show for "Dancing With the Stars", which will probably get high overall numbers and give "Deal or No Deal" the same problems it had on Mondays last season; other regular dwellers of this time period were wise to premiere this week as next week's numbers will be down with the tougher programming stunting on ABC.
Then the first Wed. of Oct. "Pushing Daisies" will finally premiere and get a decent sampling, giving competition that thrives on younger demos more difficulties and bringing "DOND" back up in the process. The dust will settle sometime after that (and who knows if any FOX baseball will be thrown into the mix here also to disrupt male viewership numbers...). But I'm guessing NBC will end up with the highest total viewers for the hour, but the demo battle promises to be much closer, with all contenders capable of becoming factors.
I think you just want Reaper to be away from the brutal Tuesday 9pm competiton. Believe it or not, the quirky-ness of both B&tG and Reaper will work well and it a solid programming decision considering what the CW had to work with for the fall.

You all are so quick to declare a show dead. I recall a little show named One Tree Hill premiering to only about 3.5 or so million viewers out of Gilmore Girls when that was a 5+ million show. The WB was patient and the show grew to become a 5 million show until they moved it of to anchor Wednesdays against Top Model. So give the show time before you say it is dead.
Originally posted by mrpotato531: No, I'm not going to judge Gossip Girl eclusively by its pilot ratings...but after the COPIOUS advertising the last 2 months on the CW (daytime and primetime) for this show...I'm extremely disappointed. And considering this aired out of ANTM with little competition, I'm viewing this as more of a loss for the CW overall than for the show. This network has an uphill battle trying to bring its numbers up this year and there's really no defending otherwise at this point.
I can only imagine how Life is Wild, Reaper, and Aliens will do now that the network's most buzzed show didn't deliever. I was actually expecting 5 million GG but oh well.
Then again...Top Model does perk up as the cycle progresses. Hopefully that can aid GG in the coming weeks.
Very disappointing premiere for Gossip Girl. The clock is ticking on The CW.
