While I expected better numbers for GG the reality is it basically replaced VM on the roster and doubled VMs numbers. Not a win for the CW but they have to be happy on some level.

U can compare Reaper with VM. U should compare GG with One Tree Hill

This is what I was saying yesterday about The CW squandering the revitilization that happened to OTH last year by putting it on in midseason this year. OTH costs less and skews better in the demos than GG appears to do.

If they did decide to bump up OTH's premiere, it wouldn't have nearly the promotion, but it always has a very loyal (albeit small) core audience that follows it wherever it goes.

I do wonder what the week 2 dropoff will be for Kid Nation..If it's severe, it might be in trouble.

I'm not so sure about PP-it'll probably do well week 1, but are they gonna to sustain it is the big question (and they got a big wildcard in the leadin- I just don't know if Pushing Daises is more than a "cult" show.)

GG, who knows-remember this was the pilot ep, so they might fine tune things in episode 2.

I agree with that. After all, despite what the OTH fans are claiming this morning, that show was not performing wel by season's end. If Gossip Girl can maintain last night's numbers by the time the finale rolls around, CW will be happy. They won't be thrilled since Gossip Girl clearly wouldn't be a break-out hit, but they will still be happy.

OTH is still on the roster... just comparing what they had last year vs this year. VM and Gimore out and Reaper and Gossip Girl in.

My thoughts:
Back to You: Solid opening for this show. This type of sitcoms typically air on CBS, not Fox, so its good so far. Til Death was actually funnier and I'm glad that it did decently as well. Kitchen Nightmares was very entertaining for us Ramsey fans and there's no reason that the counter programming to all the drama mess on the other nets won't work.
Kid Nation was a very disappointing debut in terms of numbers. I was expecting break out hit, but its still decent. Gossip Girls held a pretty respectable amount of the lead in considering how big of a hit Top Model is for CW. It will easily last a full season and probably get more unless it really falls off against Private Practice next week. Speaking of which, I think ABC will be able to come out strong next week against overall modest performers.

OTH performed as well as could be expected in the 2nd half of the season against American Idol, and also had to endure being pushed into summer airings because of The Pussycat Dolls. It's too early to tell for Gossip Girl, but based on the groundwork it laid last night, I don't see it having the same kind of legs.

With Private Practice, Bionic Woman, and Criminal Minds all coming next week, I would not expect Kitchen Nightmares to hold its audience.

The competing shows are all dramas. Reality shows with hardcore followings (Ramsay's fan base from Hell's Kitchen) usually don't get eroded by dramas, only by the passage of time or stronger reality shows.

OTH was more inconsistent last year than anything. Some weeks, including the first of its final set of eps in May did very well. Two weeks later it retains like 35% of its lead in. Overall it was decent performer, but I suspect Gossip Girls will do better (or at least it should). If GG doesn't do better, then it will have no more of a chance than OTH, Reaper, or Life is Wild of making another season.

Private Practice is lucky. Only Criminal Minds is a major threat, but the audiences are pretty different.

Well, I recorded Gossip Girls, watched it while ago, and all i can say is I've seen better & seen worse. Not mucha an answer, huh? The reason is obvious...I wasn't impressed, nor was I disgusted. But I DO hope the next eps are better.

Maybe it's cuz I was watching it with full daylight streaming in through my windows?

Kid nation? Watched about 5 minutes; it wuz what I expected...nothing.

Kitchen Nightmares? I have generally enjoyed the Ramsey offerings in the past, wondering just how much of him I could take if I were on the show before ringing his bell for him. While there's nothing really new, it's fresh contestants with fresh commentary, so I'll certainly view s'more.

I wonder just how successful this show'd be on the Food Net?

Well, I just gotta keep my fingers crossed about Gossip Girls & the CW in general. Again, I hope GG improves in quality. But I'd still advise Ostroff that she'd better not upset Tyra Banks or the acronym "CW" will come to mean
C ommitted

W restling.

Marc, do you have the half-hour breakdowns for ANTM and Gossip Girl? I am interested to see how they did in each half-hour. Thanks.

Peace!!

Sure it was inconsistent. In the first half of the year it didn't have to contend with American Idol, and then in the second half it had to do that and weather an unforeseen hiatus because of TPCD. But with double the promotion and production costs, Gossip Girl has managed to turn in numbers that are on par with the OTH debut... you don't think that indicates that Gossip Girl is a weaker show? In my book it does. It tells me that OTH has a loyal core audience that GG hasn't proven it will maintain. But next week's ratings will definitely tell us more.

In season-premiere news, The CW’s Veronica Mars limped out of the gate with a disappointing (and, of course, last-place) 2.4/ 4 in the overnights, 3.27 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.

So things could be worse--things HAVE been worse.

And of course things will be worse. Until they fire Ostroff, and get somebody in there who knows how to develop shows people want to watch--and how to cut his or her losses, instead of repeatedly compounding them.

I assume u're an OTH fan (i like the show myself) so i have to warn you. This year OTH will have problems getting above 3 million problems. And that makes it a prime candidate for cancellation.
