If Lost had been up against a first-run CSI (or Criminal Minds) this would be a really first-rate performance.

But it grew across the hour, which is impressive--and interesting. Is that about people finally realizing the clipshow section of the evening was over? Were people who had said "I don't know if I can go through another season of enigmatic pseudointellectual teases" suddenly saying "But I can't stand Donald Trump for ONE MORE SECOND!!!"?

Anyway, there's no reason for ABC to regret bringing it back--or giving it a definite finale date, either. I think a lot of people will be disappointed with last night's premiere, and they will have to work hard to avoid losing audience the same way they did last year.

Eli Stone lost audience across the hour. It didn't do as badly as some Lost lead-outs, but it didn't do well enough to make me think it's going to be around very long.

Thanks Travis for taking the time out to post the ratings while Marc has been gone this week.

I was hoping for Supernatural ratings to be a bit better than they came out to be considering the episode last night. But all-in-all, I think they are consistent with the rest of the season so far.

Peace!!

Looks like LOST will pull in 16 million viewers. For some reason I thought it would do better but it did kill in the demo. I think that Lost will settle between 13-15 million viewers a weeks. It will beat CSI and the Apprentence in viewers and the demo. I just hope the strike ends soon so this season will be complete.

Eli Stone looks like it will pull in 11 million viewers. Pretty good for this time slot. It won't see too much competition so I see it averaging 9-10 million viewers a week. As lont as the material doesn't get bad. It should do well in the demo as well.

I am surprised FOX did this well with stiffer comp. Kudos to them again. I thought that DFTL would be dead cuz of the spelling bee. I guess that would be a better show than the SB. Sorry Joey, you were annoying as a host. AYSTA5G also is not going away soon. I'm glad FOX didn't do the DOND route by over exposing this show. I see MOT following this route some where in a different time slot next year.

NBC is really gonna start hurting on Thursdays. Why they renewed the CA is beyond me. It's gonna get murdered in this timeslot. Maybe they'll move it to 10pm where it will have a shot, but as of now, NBC looks to hurt a little more as the sweeps progresses giving CBS a chance to claw it's way to 3rd in the demo.

Won't even talk about CBS. Just waiting to see how Jericho and BB9 do.

CW seemed to have it's best day in a while. Why any one cares for this network is beyond me. I see more traffic for shows that get 2-3 million viewers a week rather than the big boys. Kinda funny.

Wow, poor CBS.

At least FOX has American Idol
At least NBC has American Gladiators, Deal or no Deal
At least ABC has Dancing with the Stars, Oprah Big Give, EM:HE and Lost
CBS has what...? Jericho, Big Brother?

By the 10:30 half-hour, Eli Stone was holding about 56% of the second-half Lost audience in the demo, and about 66% of the average total viewership of Lost.

As for the quality of Eli Stone itself, I thought it was a little too colorlessly "uplifting." I smell a predictable formula. I doubt I'll watch it again next week.

I think this is a very good start for Lost when compared to the season three finale. The show obviously didn't perform as well in this premiere as it did last season.

And despite the second half decline for Eli Stone, a solid premiere, based upon the networks last series launch out of Lost (The Nine).

Here are the relevant comparisons for Lost and Eli Stone.

Lost

Season 3 premiere vs. Season 4 premiere (October 24, 2006 - 10:00-11:00):
Households - 11.0 to 9.5 (-13.6%)
Viewers - 18.82M to 16.06M (-2.8M/-15%
Adults 18-49 - 7.7 to 6.7 (-15%)

Season 3 finale vs. Season 4 premiere (May 23, 2007 - 9:00-11:00):
Households - 8.0 to 9.5 (+18.8%)
Viewers - 13.86M to 16.06M (+2.2M/15.9%)
Adults 18-49 - 5.9 to 6.7 (+13.6%)

Eli Stone

The Nine vs. Eli Stone (Thursday, October 24, 2006):
Households - 7.8 to 7.3 (-6.4%)
Viewers - 11.19M to 11.63M (+440,000/+4.0%)
Adults 18-49 - 4.6 to 4.2 (-8.7%)

It looks like a portion of those LOST viewers and early Eli Stone viewers went to the Celebrity Apprentice at 10pm an 10:30pm. Since TCE won't be competing with Eli Stone in future weeks, and I don't anticipate Lipstick Jungle to be a ratings threat, Eli Stone should stabilize in future weeks, as long as enough viewers found it engaging as I did.

Futoncritic's take--

quote:
The return of "Lost" (adults 18-49: 6.7, #1, half-hour: 3.03%) sparked ABC (adults 18-49: 5.3, #1) to victory on Thursday. Bookending the broadcast were the special "Lost: Past, Present & Future" (adults 18-49: 5.0, #2, half-hour: 10.64%) and the premiere of "Eli Stone" (adults 18-49: 4.2, #3, half-hour: -17.39%).

Compared with its third season launch (households: 11.1/17; adults 18-49: 7.5 on 10/4/06), "Lost" was down a modest 10.66% in the key demographic. As for "Stone," its 62.69% retention rate was on par with former "Lost" lead-out "The Nine's" 61.33% (households: 7.8/13; adults 18-49: 4.6 on 10/4/06).

So leaving aside the fact that Eli Stone actually didn't do very well for a premiere if it couldn't do better than The Nine, Lost premiered about as well this season as it did last season.

But it was up against a first-run Criminal Minds when it premiered last season.

Want to see how the third episode of Lost's third season did, against Criminal Minds and Game 5 of the NLCS playoffs?

Taking all factors into account, I'm not sure S4 is in such a good position.

You know, ABC could always tell them to finish up faster. Cut out the filler. But it would have to do worse than this.

And it could.

SN has become to serialized IMO. I don't think they can afford that. Even a hit show like X-Files was hurt by the fact that it become very serialized

A lot of new shows debuted this season to the same as ES then lost viewers each week. I think the show will settle at 7-8 million like DSM and Cane.

Decent numbers for Lost,Grey's Anatomy was not doing that much better. Now whether they can keep those viewers next week without all the hype will be the question.
