-American Idol Top 13:
In a surprise twist, the judges on American Idol picked four contestants (instead of three) in the Wild Card Show last night: Megan Corkrey, Jasmine Murray, Matt Giraud and Anoop Desai. They join Chris Allen, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nunez, Lil Rounds and Michael Sarver in the top 13. My pick to take it all: Danny Gokey. In other Idol news, look for the return of season one winner Kelly Clarkson on Wednesday, March 11.

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the American Idol Wild Card Show, Fox dominated this first night of the Feb. 2009 sweeps, beating second-place CBS by 960,000 viewers and 52 percent among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 3 spot was NBC, followed by ABC and the CW. Yes, this is now the February sweeps. Nielsen Media Research moved it into March to minimize the disruption surrounding the digital TV transition. Even so, no one seems to care about these “sweep” periods anymore.
American Idol opened the evening for Fox with 21.24 million viewers and a 7.5 rating/20 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m., which was a massive improvement over regularly scheduled occupant Bones. Second in the time period was Survivor: Tocantins on CBS (Viewers: 11.98 million; A18-49: 3.8/10 -- go Taj!), followed by ABC’s Ugly Betty and NBC sitcoms My Name is Earl and Kath & Kim tied for the No.3 and 4 spots as follows:
Thursday 8 p.m.
Ugly Betty (ABC)
Viewers: 6.36 million (#3); A18-49: 1.7/ 5 (#4)
My Name is Earl (NBC) – 8 p.m.
Viewers: 5.55 million (#4); A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#3)
Kath & Kim (NBC) – 8:30 p.m.
Viewers: 4.16 million (#4), A18-49: 1.8/ 5 (#4)
Needless to say, all three shows qualify as “losers.” Kath & Kim wraps up its unsuccessful run next Thursday.
Capping off the 8 p.m. was a repeat of the CW’s Smallville at 2.18 million viewers and a 0.8/ 2 in the demo.
CBS’ aforementioned CSI moved into the 9 p.m. winner’s circle, with a hefty 20.80 million viewers and a 5.3/13 among adults 18-49. Keep in mind, however, that competing Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (Viewers: #3, 5.68 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4) was a repeat. Next was Hell’s Kitchen on Fox at an estimated 10.64 million viewers and a 4.6/12 in the demo (and I stress approximate because the last few minutes of American Idol bled into the show). By 9:30 p.m., Hell’s Kitchen was down to 8.93 million viewers and a 4.1/10 in the demo. In the No. 3 spot were NBC sitcoms The Office (Viewers: 8.63 million; A18-49: 4.5/11) and 30 Rock (Viewers: 7.35 million; A18-49: 3.8/ 9), which had improved retention out of The Office this week, followed by the aforementioned encore of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC, and a repeat of Supernatural on the CW (Viewers: 1.93 million; A18-49: 0.7/ 2). Worth noting for The Office, of course, was the significant growth out of Kath & Kim.
Freshman CBS drama Eleventh Hour and NBC’s soon-to-conclude ER shared leadership at 10 p.m. as follows:
Thursday 10 p.m.
Eleventh Hour (CBS)
Viewers: 12.15 million (#1), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#2)
ER (NBC)
Viewers: 8.79 million (#2), A18-49: 3.5/10 (#1)
Last, and very least, was a repeat of ABC’s Private Practice at 4.50 million viewers and a 1.3/ 4 in the demo.
