Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 6/29/09

What follows is the fast affiliate rating results for Thursday, June 18, 2009 in the order of overall network totals and by half hour per program (in the order of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW).

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 7.38 million, ABC: 6.98, NBC: 5.76, Fox: 4.22 million, CW: 829,000

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 2.4 rating/7 share, CBS: 2.1/ 6, NBC: 1.5/ 5, Fox: 1.4/ 4, CW: 0.4/ 1

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a Monday of split leadership, with CBS the most-watched network and ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49. CBS aired a night of all repeats as follows:

CBS/Monday
8:00 p.m. – How I Met Your Mother (R)
Viewers: 5.44 million (#2), A18-49: 1.7/ 6 (#2)

8:30 p.m. – Rules of Engagement (R)
Viewers: 5.73 million (#2), A18-49: 1.8/ 6 (#2)

9:00 p.m. – Two and a Half Men (R)
Viewers: 9.13 million (#1), A18-49: 2.7/ 8 (#2)

9:30 p.m. – The Big Bang Theory (R)
Viewers: 7.96 million (#2), A18-49: 2.6/ 7 (#2)

10:00 p.m. – CSI: Miami (R)
Viewers: 8.02 million (#1), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#2)

While The Big Bang Theory will find more viewers out of established Two and a Half Men next season, it was fine where it was anchoring Monday and How I Met Your Mother at 8 p.m. is not as strong a show. Why “fix” something if it is not broken?

ABC had a typical early summer Monday with its combination of a two-hour installment of The Bachelorette (Viewers: 7.96 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 8), which built in every half-hour in viewership, and uneventful Here Come the Newlyweds (Viewers: #3, 5.04 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 6 at 10 p.m.). Take a look at the half-hour breakdown for The Bachelorette:

The Bachelorette (ABC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 7.39 million (#1), A18-49: 2.4/ 8 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 7.56 million (#1), A18-49: 2.6/ 8 (#1)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 8.38 million (#2), A18-49: 2.9/ 9 (#1)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 8.50 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/ 8 (#1)

NBC’s overused Law & Order franchise populated the 8-10 p.m. block, with a repeat of the parent series (Viewers: #3, 5.00 million; A18-49: #4, 1.1/ 4) at 8 p.m. and Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #3, 5.60 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.4/ 4) at 9 p.m. These episodes of Criminal Intent, of course, originally aired on USA. Capping off the evening on NBC was more coverage of Michael Jackson on Dateline at 6.69 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Still hard to believe, isn’t it?

In an unprecedented move, Fox replayed the American Idol performance show from early in the season which was devoted to the music of Michael Jackson. There was little interest, however, with a fourth-place 4.22 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo from 8-10 p.m.

Last, and very least, were repeats of the CW’s Gossip Girl (Viewers: 1.01 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 2) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: 653,000; A18-49: 0.3/ 1), which flip time period next season.

Nice rebound night for HIMYM. I am really glad to see it pick up 700,000 viewers from last week and .2 in the demo. Very nice job of ROE to build on HIMYM, as well.

And what can I say about BBT and its 96% demo retention from Men. The next mega hit is on its way.

No debate necessary. HIMYM did well this week. So did ROE. BBT is doing a fantastic job holding the Men audience. Despite what Marc thinks everything is coming up roses on Mondays for CBS.

While the 8pm will most likely be lower this fall (thanks to Accidentally on Purpose) I think moving The Big Bang Theory was a smart move. Not only will it help the 9pm hour grow, but it will help CSI: Miami grow too.

ROE is showing some nice potential as the 8:30 show should AOP fail. It built on HIMYM last night. I did hear that CBS wanted a better lead in for CSI: Miami, because they really are going to try and capitalize on the Leno thing at 10:00. If BBT gives them this retention it will be a very, very good move.

I agree - How I Met Your Mother did well this week. Still not as well as BBT, but well. Should be able to do around 8 million in the fall. Even better, though, was Rules of Engagement at 8:30, which even built in the demo. When HIMYM was airing repeats at 8:30, it never built out of BBT once. I would consider this great news for ROE and bad news for HIMYM, depending on how you look at it.

That's a pretty good performance for The Bachelorette. It's finally starting to pick up some steam. And 96% retention in demo for BBT? That's fantastic. And of course, Bachelorette was up, so Newlyweds was up.

And is anyone else getting sick of Law & Order repeats? NBC is really overusing these shows. They're just about the only shows that NBC repeats. The Dateline special at 10pm did well, though. Meanwhile, I bet this will teach FOX never to repeat American Idol again.

I agree with the ROE 8:30 showing. It has shown itself to be a nice little show at 8:30 the past two weeks. Last week it retained the HIMYM audience, and this week it built on it. I could see CBs plugging in ROE for AOP very early in the season if AOP is dropping the HIMYM audience.

Three Rivers gets poor review from futoncritic. Are we at all surprised? This looks like one of the worst new dramas this season.

Really good night for ABC and CBS. Both networks were up considerably week to week. Positive results for all CBS comedies and hopefully the HIMYM is destined to fail nonsense will end. The Bachelorette seems to be coming into its own and that's helping Newleyweds. With Wipeout and everything else in sink mode at ABC, they really needed this.

Expected results from both NBC and Fox last night. Meanwhile, I think the CW made a good decision putting the stronger Gossip Girl in the higher rated 9pm hour instead of letting One Tree Hill suck up another season at 9pm. Now while they're at it, move 90210 to Mondays at 8, OTH to Fridays at 8 and ship Smallville to Tuesdays at 8 to battle Idol.

Play the 2009 July Sweep Prediction Game

Less than three days remain to submit your predictions in the 2009 July Sweep Prediction Game.

This year, the July Sweep runs from Thursday July 2nd to Wednesday July 29th, and we have the second annual July Sweep Prediction Game. Everyone who is a registered member of pifeedback.com is eligible to play the game. All are welcome.

Who will reign supreme in July? There are four tight A18-49 races shaping up:

So now it's your turn to predict the outcome of the 2009 July Sweep...all you have to do is predict the top six English-language broadcasters and Univision (the top Spanish-language broadcaster).

The Fight for First: FOX vs NBC

Will a re-surgent, originals-laden NBC come from behind and move ahead of FOX this summer, who have won the past four July Sweeps in A18-49 demo?

The Tangled Tussle for Third: ABC vs CBS vs Univision

Will ABC be able to get its post-DTV, post-NBA ratings back on track? Will 'Big Brother' help lift CBS out of fourth place in A18-49s? Could Univision come from behind with its stellar telenovellar demos and be the new third place network?

The Scuffle for Sixth: MyNetworkTV vs The CW (with TeleFutura and ION nipping at their heels)

The July Sweep scuffle for sixth place is between MyNetworkTV and The CW, with TeleFutura and ION nipping closely at their heels...on recent Mondays, those double-ups of 'NCIS' encores have given ION more than a few triumphs in viewers over MyNetworkTV and The CW. Both ION and TeleFutura are likely to be included in the 2009-10 season editions of the Sweep Prediction Game

So, if you want to engage in the sport of Kings, just go to the following link below and submit your entry.

LINK TO -> 2009 July Sweep Prediction Game

Good luck to all contestants who enter. Good luck to the networks and their web of affiliates across the country who are in the fight of their life against those bloody cable series, against late-day sunny summer evening alternatives, against young viewers who timespin away on social networking sites.

Thank you,

Dumont

The deadline for final entries will be 8:00 AM on Friday July 3rd just before the very first overnight metered market reports are being relayed across the country.

NBC doesn't really have much else to repeat. The comedies repeat to very low ratings. Heroes would do even worse than the comedies on repeat. They have Southland that is being repeated on Fridays in about a month to spice things up a little, but other than that, it's Law and Order and Dateline all summer. It's another case of NBC either needing to get further involved into year round programming or being patient with their procedural shows that will likely repeat well in the summer and can provide some variety to endless Law and Order and Dateline repeats.

As for AI, those repeat numbers are terrible. I thought they would have done better than that.

You're wrong, Julie. HIMYM's repeats built off BBT's this spring MORE THAN ONCE, with the most recent being (i think) two or three weeks ago, when BBT got a 1.8 and HIMYM got a 2.0. HIMYM is now doing comparably to BBT at 8, so I don't think you really have a point here

That said, i still think himym's better at 8:30 cuz it's CBS's youngest skewing show and later is better for that...
