Now here’s some spin I can get behind: The live-plus-seven-day DVR numbers from the opening week of the TV season are in, and 90210, Melrose Place, and Vampire Diaries all saw significant gains compared to live-only viewing, with 90210 getting the biggest boost. The highlights:

* 90210 grew a considerable 73 percent in women 18-34 (1.92 vs. 3.32) and 46 percent in total viewers (1.9 million vs. 2.9 million).

* Melrose Place, which has been struggling in the ratings, gained 54 percent in women 18-34 (2.12 vs. 3.26) and 43 percent in total viewers (2 million vs. 2.8 million).

* Freshman hit Vampire Diaries soared 64 percent in women 18-34 (2.33 vs. 3.83) and 40 percent in total viewers (4.0 million vs. 5.7 million). Eeker

* Supernatural grew 35 percent in women 18-34 (1.5 vs. 2.0) and 38 percent (2.9 million vs. 4 million) in total viewers.

Data for Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and Smallville should start trickling in next week.

J.J. Abrams-backed drama in bidding war
Three nets vying for spy script written by Josh Reims

A bidding war is raging over a drama spec script backed by J.J. Abrams.

ABC, CBS and NBC are in pursuit of the hot script by writer Josh Reims who first worked with Abrams on his WB series "Felicity."

The project, from Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV, centers on two spies working together who are also husband and wife.

The show, whose premise is somewhat reminiscent of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," sparked a bidding war the moment it hit the marketplace last week, with ABC, NBC and CBS jockeying up for the lead position.

According to sources, ABC and NBC now appear ahead in the negotiations to land the script.

The untitled project brings Abrams back into the spy arena that he mined with his ABC series "Alias."

Abrams, co-creator/executive producer of Fox’s sci-fi drama series “Fringe,” got a presentation order from Fox earlier this month for a half-hour project written by Mike Markowitz.

Reims is repped by UTA. Abrams is with WME.

Comcast, the nation’s leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services, is in talks to buy the entertainment giant NBC-Universal from General Electric, according to a knowledgeable individual.

Deal points were hammered out at a meeting among bankers for both sides in New York on Tuesday, executives familiar with the meeting said.

Two individuals informed about the meeting said that a deal had already been completed at a purchase price of $35 billion.

A spokeswoman for NBC-Universal had no comment. A spokeswoman for Comcast also had no comment.

NBC-Universal has been believed to be in play for months, although GE has publicly denied any intention of selling the unit. In recent weeks, minority stakeholder Vivendi has been apparently preparing to exercise its right to sell 20 percent of the entertainment company in an IPO.

Comcast has been among those rumored to be interested in buying that equity.

Here is an interesting article about a type of viewer group that advertisers covet.

ABC Grabs Majority Of Upscale Viewers
by Wayne Friedman,Media Daily News

Upscale TV viewers are still prime customers for TV marketers -- and, for the first week of the season, ABC is claiming victory.

ABC says it has grabbed the top seven of 15 shows with "Grey's Anatomy," the highest-rated non-sports prime program at an 8.43 rating among viewers 18-49 making at least $100,000.

Also in the group is "Desperate Housewives" (third place, 5.39 rating). ABC also did well with new shows: "Cougar Town" (6th place, 5.05), "FlashForward" (8th place, 4.92), and "Modern Family" (10th place, 4.70). It also had two different episodes of "Dancing with the Stars" placing 13th and 15th.

CBS comes next with five in the top 15. Its best was "The Big Bang Theory" (4th place, 5.36 rating); "Two and a Half Men" (5th place, 5.23); "How I Met Your Mother" (7th place, 5.04); "Amazing Race 15" (9th place, 4.87); and "60 Minutes" (14th place and a 4.46 rating).

CBS had another three in the top 20, making eight in the top 20, the most of any network. This included "Survivor: Samoa" (17th place, 4.32 rating); "Criminal Minds" (18th place, 4.20); and "CSI: NY" (20th place, 4.14).

Fox's best came from "House," which landed in second place with a 6.28 rating. The network had four overall in the top 20. "Family Guy" was in 12th place with a 4.66 number; "The Cleveland Show" was in 16th place and a 4.37 rating; and "Glee" was in 19th place with a 4.15 number.

NBC, which in the recent past had the most upscale shows of any broadcast network, had just one in the top 20 in the first week with "The Office." "The Office" came in third place at a 6.23 rating. "The Jay Leno Show" came in 39th place with a 2.63 rating.

When including sports programming, NBC -- adding in "Sunday Night Football" -- helps its overall numbers among 18-49 viewers that make more than $100,000. NBC's average without sports is a 2.29 average rating; with sports it earns a 3.10 rating.

Overall, looking at all prime-time programming, ABC is at a 3.74 average rating among upscale 18-49 viewers; CBS, a 3.21; NBC, a 3.10; and Fox, a 2.79 number.

I'm sorry but these numbers don't mean squat. Local news much more influence by the audience's trust of the news org., its anchors, and its heritage than lead in. For instance, NBC affiliates in markets like Kansas City just suck in general. It wouldn't matter what it had for a lead in most nights. It would still finish in last. Chicago's ABC wins every night regardless if Greys Anatomy 2 hour eps or Cupid is the lead in. Local news is in a free fall in many markets because its getting to be more and more cheap every day. Eventually I don't see a whole lot more than 2 local newscasts in many markets. I know this is a small market perspective, but here we would rather get our news from our actual local media (newspapers and radio stations) that actually cover our towns than a mid-size TV station that focuses on a small city 30 to 90 miles away. It's why good small market radio stations and newspapers are doing really well yet. It's why I honestly believe TV news with their rather regional viewpoints will shrink considerably. The big markets will still have to cover major stuff in the smaller areas but the focus has to go back to their primary city due to smaller budgets. Eventually with the web I don't think we'll really differentiate from the local paper, newstalk radio station, or TV station. They'll all be covering the same thing in the same way- on the web. Major market radio stations that simply push play and use crap like "Premium Choice Content" (Cheap Channel does this all the time- his name is Ryan Seacrest) are going to go broke. Why do we need generic radio with no local flavor, no personality? What is the reason to tune in for? The music? People have iPods for that. Forget satellite. As soon as we have internet in our cars, the internet stations that are free will push them out. Bottom line there: you have to engage the audience somehow if you want them to stick around. Sorry if I went off topic there but its whats happening.

It appears MyNet is getting viewers for 5th Grader but not DOND. Stupid Fox should've left the game shows on Fridays. Now they can pay more money for less demos. What a concept!

'24' grad Reiko Aylesworth joins 'Damages'

Former 24 heroine Reiko Aylesworth has booked a recurring role on Damages, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Not surprisingly, details about her character are being kept under wraps. The actress joins a season 3 cast that also includes new series regulars Campbell Scott and Martin Short, as well as special guest stars Lily Tomlin and Keith Carradine.

Production of the show’s 13-episode third season began last week ahead of a January debut.

Yeah, those 5th Grader numbers on MNTV are actually pretty good. I'm sure both it and Lyrics would have been around the 6 million, 1.5 demo range if FOX had left them on Fridays, which would still be well above what they're doing now and fairly competitive. FOX was beyond stupid for letting this duo go.

ABC Family greenlights comedy pilots
Melissa Joan Hart, Joey Lawrence attached to untitled show

ABC Family has greenlighted two comedy pilots, one starring Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence and the other hailing from "Boy Meets World" creator Michael Jacobs.

In the untitled Hart-Lawrence multicamera project, the "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch" star will play Hailey, a political dynasty wild child-turned-politician who takes in her teenage niece and pre-adolescent nephew when her sister goes to prison and her brother-in-law flees. She turns for help to Jack (Lawrence), who, desperate for a job, moves in and becomes the family's "manny."

Bob Young and David Kendall penned the script and are executive producing the pilot with Hart, Lawrence and Paula Hart.

The untitled single-camera project, written and executive produced by Jacobs, examines parenting philosophies. It centers on a young father, recently laid off from his architecture firm, who begins to mentor his underdog middle daughter, while his veterinarian wife shares a closer bond with their Type A older daughter.

Both pilots will film this fall in Los Angeles.

ABC Family is coming off a good summer in which two of its three new series, the comedy "10 Things I Hate About You" and the drama "Make It or Break It," debuted to strong ratings and earned second-season renewals.

Driven by its hits "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and "Make It," ABC Family just wrapped its most-watched third quarter to date in adults 18-34, women 18-34, adults 18-49, women 18-49 and females 12-34

Flavor Flav shopping new reality show

quote:
That clock around Flavor Flav's neck says it's time to return to reality TV.

The original basic-cable ladies man is teaming with producer Eric Ortner to shop a new series to networks in which he returns to high school to receive his diploma.

Flav (or as he was known in school, William Drayton) says he dropped out in the 10th grade.

"I just want to show the world it's never too late to get your diploma, and show kids they should stay in school and not wait until you're old to get it," Flav said. "Everybody sees me as this big love mogul. Now I got a baby girl, I've been there and done that and now it's time for the next episode."

Flav starred in VH1's "The Surreal Life," "Strange Love" and in three seasons on the popular dating show "Flavor of Love" that set ratings records for the network. Flav ended up settling down with a woman that he met outside the show.

"Flavor of Love" spawned sequels that ran into recent controversy when contestant Ryan Jenkins was accused of murder.

Hearing the news about Jenkins "really broke my heart," Flav said. "It's really messed up, love can make you and love can break you. This guy definitely couldn't handle it."

With VH1 looking to move away from lurid dating shows, Ortner -- who would executive produce the show with Ethan Goldman and Michael Hirschorn -- thinks the timing is right for Flav to return with a new format.

"It's perfect timing to change the type of show he was going to do and be more message-driven," Ortner said, noting the project was in the works before the Jenkins scandal.

"I've been known to be a leader and I've had a lot of followers and there's a certain franchise I've set up on VH1," Flav said. "This show can be big enough to change the direction of reality shows."

Maybe somewhere in Texas? CBS had success with Dallas before maybe it, Austin, Ft. Worth or Houston?
