Regardless, I think it's time to end Simpsons, and King of the Hill while we're at it. Simpsons does do well in syndication, but it has what, 400 episodes? I think it will be fine.
We don't NEED more eps, but we're going to GET more eps, like it or not. And honestly, this is like complaining about Charles Schulz continuing to draw Peanuts, after he'd run out of ideas. The Simpsons has all its main characters, it's still funny a lot of the time, and there's always fresh targets for satire out there.
I'd only call for it to be canceled if Groening didn't want to do it anymore, or if any of the primary voice actors wasn't going to be involved anymore.
30 Rock deserves to be canceled, for being an unfunny flop. The Simpsons is funnier now than 30 Rock ever was. I never feel like I've wasted my time, watching a new Simpsons ep. I tried five minutes of 30 Rock last night and I WANT MY FIVE MINUTES BACK.

Oooh, nice job of covering my point with a snappy comback.
Sorry this one wasn't so snappy, but I left work early.

What else, ya got... lay it on me.
Just the truth, with snarks, like always.
quote:
Seriously, trying to reason with you feels like arguing with a politician ;-)
Sheesh, what country do YOU live in?
quote:
Who says? Are you the decider of how a show in it's 18th season is supposed to behave to be considered viable?
Well sure. Aren't we all?
quote:
I actually disagree wholeheartedly with you.
You're accusing ME of sounding like a politician?
quote:
Although some core fans remain, it's reasonable to assume that over such a long time, many many many of the original fans have become tired of the show for one reason or another (and not *all* of them based on quality). Yet, if the show is still viable, it can continue on.
Sure, and if a braindead patient stays plugged into a respirator, he can continue on. Very similar situation.
quote:
The key is to get NEW viewers. It's quite likely that there were viewers in it's 18-49 demo last night that WEREN'T EVEN BORN WHEN THE SHOW PREMIERED.
Well, let's see the youth demo numbers--it's not like we have to guess.
quote:
There are new viewers to be had for this show.
Okay. You do realize that applies to every other show on television, right?
quote:
A healthy lead-in could bring those viewers.
Okay. You do realize that applies to every other show on television, right?
quote:
This show could live on (if tended to correcctly) for years and years still.
Okay. You do realize--oh never mind.

In fact, I think that it's STILL got more lasting power than the original CSI. This is all of course if NBC doesn't botch it up (which it probably will).
Yes, we all know how NBC has failed to nurture and protect the L&O franchise.
quote:
But the fact is that L&O doesn't need to keep original cast members to stay relevant.
Particularly since it was never relevant in the first place. Just popular. Which it isn't anymore.
quote:
This is a show that can continue with entirely new people. They just have to get new fans along the way.
But why would new people be more inclined to watch L&O than some other show they haven't watched before? Because they really dig that "DUM DUM!" sound effect at the beginning of every scene?
quote:
Not every show can do this (insert: ER)
And insert the same tired arguments you have just made, only coming from pissed off ER fans.

One last observation...
Promises, promises......

if your idea of a brand name being able to survive on it's own without healthy promotion, Coca-Cola wouldv'e stopped advertising in about 1922.
And if your idea of running a network is to just keep running the same shows year after year, we'd still be watching Dragnet, and L&O would never have come into existence. And frankly, that would have suited me fine.
-Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening (Thursday, April 26, 2007) Fox: +12, ABC: -11, NBC: -10, CBS: -12, CW: -21
----------
Note: The fast affiliate results for Thursday will be posted at PIFeedback by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Thursday, April 24, 2008.
----------
-Yesterday’s Winners: Survivor: Micronesia (CBS), CSI (CBS), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), Without a Trace (CBS), Lost (ABC)
-Honorable Mention: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox), The Office (NBC)
-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats): Let’s see what happens when the fast affiliate results are posted at PIFeedback.com (adults 18-49, in particular). But hovering towards the list of losers is NBC’s Scrubs and 30 Rock; and the CW’s Supernatural.
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: CBS dominated this first night of the May 2008 sweeps in the overnights, beating second-place ABC by 10 percent. But ABC is the network to beat among adults 18-49 once the fast affiliate results are posted at PIFeedback.com. Third overall in the metered markets was Fox, followed by once unstoppable NBC (remember those days?), and lowly the CW. Only Fox was up year-to-year.
CBS’ perennial Survivor: Micronesia (6.9 rating/12 share) opened the evening on a winning note, outdelivering the return of ABC’s Ugly Betty (#2: 6.4/10) by eight percent. Both hours were down year-to-year: Survivor: Micronesia by 12 percent (6.9/12 vs. 7.8/13 on April 26, 2007) and Ugly Betty by 19 percent (6.4/10 vs. 7.9/13). Wasn’t it frustrating to see naïve Jason not use the immunity idol last night? With the women in obvious control, my pick to go all the way is Cirie.
Also airing in the 8 p.m. hour was the first half of an expanded edition of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (#3: 5.3/ 9), NBC’s My Name is Earl (#4: 4.3/ 7) and the relocated Scrubs (#4: 3.7/ 6), and the CW’s Smallville (#5: 2.7/ 5). One look at Scubs and there is absolutely no reason for ABC to potentially be putting this on its schedule next season.
The 9 p.m. hour featured the return of the battle of CBS’ CSI versus Grey’s Anatomy on ABC in originals. CSI was first in the overnights (11.4/15), 11 percent above Grey’s Anatomy (10.3/16). But Grey’s Anatomy will, of course, dominate among adults 18-49. Year-to-year, both dramas remain on the downside: CSI by 12 percent in the overnights last night (11.4/15 vs. 13.0/20 on April 26, 2007) and Grey’s Anatomy by 23 percent (10.3/16 vs. 13.3/20).
Third in the 9 p.m. hour was the second half of Fox’s expanded Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.5/ 8), followed by NBC’s The Office (4.8/ 7) and relocated 30 Rock (3.8/ 6), and the CW’s fading Supernatural (1.8/ 3). Since The Office always manages to score among adults 18-49, keep an eye on it when the fast affiliate results are posted at PIFeedback.com. But a loss of 21 percent in the overnights for 30 Rock at 9:30 p.m. is disappointing. Overall, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? averaged a healthy 5.4/ 9 from 8-10 p.m.
As for The Office, I watched it again last night and really enjoyed it. For more of my thoughts, listen to today’s PIPodcast at www.marcberman.tv. CBS’ Without a Trace led the 10 p.m. hour, with a 9.6/16 in the overnights. Second was ABC’s relocated Lost at a 7.4/12. But Lost will indeed hold a hefty advantage among adults 18-49 over older skewing Without a Trace. Third was NBC’s veteran ER at a 5.7/10. Times have certainly changed!
If GA's 23% drop is confirmed in the fast nationals, that would mean 15.5 million.
-Nick Lachey Named Host of ABC’s High School Musical: Summer Session: Actor/singer Drew Lachey will host ABC’s upcoming summer reality/competition, Disney’s High School Musical: Summer Session
Well seeing the overnights for SN are not surprising, at least to me. I really do not think it was their strongest episode this season. I mean I understood what they were trying to do with the episode, but the hand-held camera idea made it difficult to watch the episode last night. And let me say it was the first episode that I really could not watch all the way through. I had to listen to it instead, which is a shame because this is the only show I put my school work aside and actually watch and usually enjoy for an hour. Last night, that did not happen.
And the previews for next weeks episode look a lot better, so maybe the ratings will increase a smidge.
On another note, SN has been renewed for a fourth season, so the SN fans can relax a little for the rest of the season.
