-Ratings Breakdown:
Despite airing repeats of CSI and Without a Trace, CBS still managed to dominate in the Thursday overnights, beating second-place Fox by 1.5 rating points. Fox’s improved position on Thursday (without American Idol, no less) is one of the positive stories of this season. Third overall in the metered markets was NBC, followed by ABC and the CW, which remains marred by the double-digit year-to-year erosion. Keep in mind, of course, that Grey’s Anatomy on ABC is still missing from the schedule. It returns in originals next week, leading into the relocated Lost. As much as I have tried to get hooked, I will never understand all the interest in Grey’s Anatomy.

Before we get into the overnights, let’s talk about CBS’ Survivor: Micronesia, which left cocky Ozzie gasping for air (so to speak) when sly Cirie pulled a fast one and managed to get the immunity idol-holding superstar voted out. Personally, I think this was one of the best moments of the 16-season old series.

Delving into the numbers, Survivor: Micronesia won the 8 p.m. hour, with a 7.2 rating/12 share in the overnights. Comparably, that was just eight percent below Survivor: Fiji on the year-ago evening (7.8/13 on April 19, 2007). Second overall was Fox keeper Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, with a healthy 5.6/10, followed by NBC sitcoms My Name is Earl (4.5/ 8) and 30 Rock (4.5/ 7), which are dependent on adults 18-49, a repeat of ABC’s Lost (2.9/ 5), and Smallville on the CW (2.7/ 5). The good news for 30 Rock, of course, was the full retention out of My Name is Earl. Too bad My Name is Earl did not have a bigger number, however.

Minus Grey’s Anatomy, a repeat of CBS’ CSI led the 9 p.m. hour, with a 7.8/12 in the overnights. Second was Fox’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics (6.1/10), followed by NBC’s The Office (5.7/ 9) and Scrubs (4.8/ 7), which is actually up year-to-year, another repeat episode of ABC’s Lost (3.5/ 5), and a repeat of Supernatural on the CW (1.7/ 3). The good news for The Office was growth of 27 percent out of 30 Rock (and a potential first-place finish among adults 18-49). But after watching, and loving, last week’s dinner party themed episode, the problem with last night is why the show itself is not a mass appeal hit. There is no one to like on The Office. Steve Carell as Michael is completely obnoxious and the employees of Dunder Mifflin leave very little to be desired. Then again, can you really blame them while working in an environment like that?

First at 10 p.m. was a repeat of CBS’ Without a Trace (7.1/12), followed by NBC’s ER (5.9/ 9) and the season, or series finale of ABC’s Eli Stone (4.6/ 8). Based on the results, I predict this is the last we will see of Eli Stone.

30 Rock seemed to hold on to just about all of Earl's audience. Hmmmm.

A look at the 8pm hour

1. Survivor: Micronesia ( 7.2 rating/12)
2. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (5.6/10)
3. My Name is Earl (4.5/ 8)
4. 30 Rock (4.5/ 7)
5. Lost (2.9/ 5)
6. Smallville (2.7/ 5)

Smallville actually has a shot of not being last in its time slot.

5th Grader looks to have pulled about 10 million against a heavy hyped Survivor and New Earl.

Based on the overnights, the Sunday airing seems to have helped Eli Stone a bit (4.6 this week compared to 4.0 last week). Of course, WaT was a repeat this week, so that may have helped ES too.

We thought Lipstick Jungle was done for as well, but it's coming back.

Marc is simply saying that on the merits, ES doesn't rate a renewal.

And it doesn't. Period.

Jericho came back after being canceled. It didn't deserve to, and its comeback was shortlived, but it came back. And now CBS is reportedly trying to find some cable outfit to continue it.

It's just as hard for people in showbiz to admit they screwed up as it is for politicians.

Well, rumor has it that ABC likes the show, and it does OK when it has a lead in (not great, but if ABC is going to renew DSM, AtJ, and Scrubs, ES's ratings would still put it in the running). I can see it being renewed.

I'm not sure there are two more likeable characters on television than Jim and Pam on the Office.
