Prime-Time Ratings:
Thursday 1/22/09

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 12.81 million, ABC: 10.47, Fox: 8.75, NBC: 6.99, CW: 3.41

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 3.9 rating/10 share, CBS: 3.3/ 9, NBC: 3.1/ 8, Fox: 2.7/ 7, CW: 1.4/ 4

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Bones (Fox), CSI (CBS), Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), The Office (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
My Name is Earl (NBC), Kath & Kim (NBC), 30 Rock (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a night of split leadership on this below average rated Thursday, with CBS the most-watched network and ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49. Fox got a boost, meanwhile, from the relocated (and underrated) Bones, which always gives the network a boost no matter where it airs.

Since we are all wondering how CSI did minus William Petersen (and with Laurence Fishburne), let’s start with the veteran forensic crime solving drama. The good news: it won the 9 p.m. hour and finished as the most-watched show of the evening, with 17.53 million viewers. But it was not enough to beat competing Grey’s Anatomy on ABC among adults 18-49. Take a look:

Thursday 9 p.m.
CSI (CBS)
Viewers: 17.53 million (#1), A18-49: 4.9/12 (#2)

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Viewers: 14.25 million (#2), A18-49: 5.6/14 (#1)

The bottom line: CBS executives can’t take a long, deep breathe. This is a positive start for Laurence Fishburne on CSI.

Earlier in the evening on the Eye net was a repeat of CSI, at 8.60 million viewers (#2) and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4) from 8-9 p.m. And freshman Eleventh Hour capped off the night with 12.31 million viewers (#1) and a third-place 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that put retention out of CSI of 70 percent in total viewers and 59 percent in the demo. Coming up in April: mystery Harper’s Island.

Also on ABC was Ugly Betty at 8 p.m. (Viewers: #3, 7.40 million; A18-49: #3, 2.3/ 7), which remains down year-to-year, and recently relocated Private Practice at 10 p.m. (Viewers: #2, 9.63 million; A18-49: #1, 3.6/10), which is an improvement from recent occupant Life on Mars.

NBC had a typical Thursday with its line-up of My Name is Earl (Viewers: #4, 6.50 million; A18-49: #2, 2.6/ 8), soon-to-depart Kath & Kim (Viewers: #4, 4.89 million; A18-49: #4, 2.2/ 6), The Office (Viewers: #3, 8.74 million; A18-49: #3, 4.6/11), 30 Rock (Viewers: #4, 6.43 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 8) and soon-to-retire ER (Viewers: #3, 7.69 million; A18-49: #2, 3.1/ 8). 30 Rock, unfortunately, continues to squander the lead-in support, with retention out of The Office of just 74 percent in viewers and 70 percent among adults 18-49. But The Office remains a solid draw among adults 18-49 despite the minimal support from Kath & Kim.

Fox's relocated Bones, meanwhile, lifted Fox to a dominant (and improved) 9.97 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 in the demo at 8 p.m. A second episode followed by 7.52 million viewers (#4) and a 2.5/ 6 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m.

The CW capped off the evening with its combination of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 3.79 million; A18-49: #5, 1.6/ 4), which seems to have perked up in recent weeks, and the compatible Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 3.04 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3).

I'll say it again -- 30 rock is a total loser and should be in the loser's column.

Woah, CSI took a hit without Grissom.

Private Practice is growing each week.

Well, at least Thursday still works for The CW. I actually expected more curious viewers to watch CSI in order to check out Laurence Fishburne. I guess we won't know for sure how well CSI will hold up without William Petersen till another couple of weeks.

Kath&Kim and 30 Rock are both hurting NBC a lot. NBC needs to be ordering up more sitcom pilots for next season.

WOW! CSI: barely went down. People were talking about a huge drop down to 12-13 million viewers. I think people will soon start to forget Grissom and get behind Laurence Fishbourne.

Bones is showing signs of dominance at 8pm and will affect Survivor's numbers big time.

Ugly Betty and 30 Rock were huge losers last night. UB the end is near!

Little advice to NBC, its time to get back to multi-cams next year.

I'll talk more about the rest of the ratings in detail in my column later.

I've heard ABC is mulling moving Ugly Betty out of the 8pm time period and trying out a comedy block. Not sure when, but watch for it.

Bones, oh, poor Bones. The next several weeks are going to be hard on its ratings, with the crazy lack of consistent scheduling. It won't win the 8pm hour when Survivor comes back (though it was down compared to what it was doing on Wednesdays)... but when was the last time Fox was number two in that hour with regular programming? And Fox should really try and avoid airing it in the 9pm hour ever again.

Will Grey's remain at this level when it returns in two weeks for the start of its crossover? Or was this uptick due to the end of its three part serial killer arc? Or due to CSI's lower numbers (than last week, at least... it remains to be seen whether there's a permanent dip with Grissom gone)?

Well that's a so-so result for CSI. Clearly NCIS and Mentalist are the number one and two shows on CBS, that's sad given how better CSI is than those two

GA didn't jump a lot from last week so that's bad news for ABC. If DH doesn't pick up when it returns black days will come for ABC

EH will almost surely be renwed, but where will it air?

Travis, could you please post the data for Bones since Marc forgot?

Also, how do you think CBS will be affected by the Billboard laws/litigation going on in California? (I ask because you are always talking about billboards).

Steve McPherson said ABC is going to look like a whole different network next year so upfronts will be very interesting this year.

Steve knows UB is dying so a comedy block there would be perfect. Steve is also going back to multi-cams with real life like characters like Roseanne.

I haven't watched GA in over a month and wished I could've seen that serial killer s/l.

I think Grey's will stay around these levels. last week CSI was above average and week before people didnt know it was on. I think that may have hurt betty as well. last week it was preempted and people maybe didnt know this week was new. but if Betty can't improve a bit I think next season will be its last

Well, the Bones demos don't look too good. 2.9 and 2.5, I think. Looks like Fox may have moved this show one to many times. And of course it is off next week. Hopefully it can build momentum again, but who knows when Idol keeps knocking it off the air.
