Conan O'Brien, Fox Plan a Show On FX First, Then Broadcast
quote:
Fox executives are scheming for Conan O'Brien's big comeback. They are kicking around Conan hosting a four-night-a-week show on Fox's sister station FX.
A weekend version of the show would air on Fox. Eventually, once network executives convince affiliates to carry him, Conan will return to late night against his original rival: NBC's Jay Leno.

Stephen Battaglio, the business editor for TV Guide Magazine (subscription only), spoke with sources who told him the plan. They say News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch will have a hard time resisting an attack on NBC's Tonight Show with the host they turned away.

Fox Broadcasting entertainment chairman Peter Rice would also get a boost for landing the deal. "This could make him," an insider told Battaglio. "His fingerprints would be all over it."

O'Brien and Fox are in talks but more "serious discussions are expected to happen over the next six weeks," according to TV Tattle's scan of the article.

Taking the time on FX would allow Fox to woo their affiliates. Meanwhile, they would have to figure out what to do with Wanda Sykes, who has a late night show at the 11 p.m. timeslot on Fox.

Conan on FX at 11 PM is a great idea for the network. It could bring an audience to FX that it needs to launch its shows.

I think FOX did well with NASCAR last night. These rating are higher than what they usually get with their usual Saturday combination of Cops/AMW.

NBC really needs to stop with the Mercy reruns on Saturdays. They're killing an already low rated night.

Something tells me that he won't fit all that well on FX...

What was the demo on Wednesday? A 0.9? Odd that this encore outrated that encore.

It's hard to say since I don't know what the Conan show will look like. FX is targeting younger demos and Conan does have some pull in the younger demos. So I could see a potential match.

I'm really surprised that NBC is still running Mercy repeats. They really just need to run Law and Orders on Saturday.

Maybe the once-weekly Conan show on Fox might air Sundays at 11 P.M. ET/PT.

This way,

(1) Wanda Sykes doesn't get bumped, and,

(2) Fox affiliates (at least at first) won't have to bump the A-list off-network sitcoms they paid big money for from the 11 o'clock slot.

I'm a little disappointed that this week's rerun of Hallmark Hall of Fame did not get as good ratings as the previous week's edition.

I prefer Conan to the other present late-night hosts. I would watch his show if a Canadian broadcaster picked up the rights. Four days per week on a cable channel and weekend edition on main FOX network look good.
