I would like to take a moment to thank TV-aholic for all of the work he has done lately posting weekly viewing trends for each program. I have found myself using the information on a regular basis. Thanks, TV-aholic!

As for the cost of an episode of a show: how much was each Friends cast member paid per episode in that last season? How much does an 'all-star' cast like Big Shots or Dirty Sexy Money cost this season? I know that cast is not the only cost of a show, but is the ABC portion of Pushing Daisies' budget really 'significantly' higher than that of other 'high end' shows being made this year?
I like whimsy too, and Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time faves, but I think PD is too self-consciously whimsical and cute, particularly in terms of its intrusive and heavyhanded music. I also find that the dialog strains to be witty and funny when it's really rather dull. Part of PD's problem might be that it emulates big-budget theatrical films but pales in comparison. I should also add that original programming on pay cable (HBO and Showtime) is generally far superior to anything on the broadcast networks. So it's not just PD that's lacking in quality ... I'd say the same thing about most shows on the networks.
I love whimsy(is that a word that can be said alone?), and PD just fits right into the bill, for me, I like PD more than any other show on either broadcast or cable, for example, I loved damages on fx and mad men on amc, I also watch help me help you, nip tuck, weeds, californication and dexter among other cable shows, and I still think that PD is much best show right now
I think the dialog is extremely smart and witty and fastpaced, and I think that it doesnt emulate huge movies per se, but it is very ambitious, and it is very successful with its ambitions, and shouldnt we try to encourage shows that broaden the horizons of tv, I mean there is nothing on tv that has a creative style as PD's, and it reminds me of the french film "amelie" which is also very creative and witty, and has a similar style
I respect your opinion. I don't hate PD; I stopped watching because it was becoming a bit dull and tedious. I do agree with you that we should try to encourage shows that broaden TV's horizons, so I wish PD success (although I don't have to watch, do I?) .
You know, I saw Amelie and didn't particularly like it, but that's one film I want to see again ... I'd like to give it another chance. Maybe I was tired the night I saw it.

I respectfully beg to differ. I think it's fine for contributors to express their honest opinions, good or bad, on this board, as long as their posts are on-topic and respectful to others and don't resort to name-calling (no one here deserves to be tagged a "moron"). For one thing, TV insiders who might be reading the board can derive viewer feedback that helps determine why a show is succeeding or failing. And besides, what is a "forum" if not an open discussion that presents differing viewpoints?

Do you remember the "all-star" sitcom, "Center of the Universe," a few years back? I got it direct from the horse's mouth that its price tag was EXORBITANT for a freshman sitcom, reputedly the most expensive one of all time. Where do you think the money was going?
The sky-high license fee of the show was obviously #1 among reasons for why it was one of the least-promoted of all new shows that year -- and why CBS went out of their way to kill it by changing its premiere date 3 or 4 times... before finally debuting it smack in the middle of the World Series.
I can't think of any other reasons for why "Dirty Sexy Money" wasn't picked up two seconds after it premiered.
-- "Better Off Ted," Wednesdays at some time or another at some point or another in the near future. Because we can't all live in mansions and not ever work like the people on "Modern Family."

I second that!
I third with my thanks too for helping to build useful archive references for all the current programs.
And I am grateful too for the regular reports on the nascent MyNetworkTV as well.

Yes, I for one would love to know with salaries for cast members like Michael Vartan and Dylan McDermott on "Big Shots" and Donald Sutherland, Jill Clayburgh, William Baldwin and Peter Krause on "Dirty Sexy Money", how much these shows cost to make, because all in all "PD", I wouldn't think would have as high a salary expense since their two leads were all but unknown.
The 1.65 million is a "license fee", that's what the network pays the studio. The actual cost of producing an episode is likely much higher (so studio has to recoup with the back end / ancillary stuff.

Big jump for CM. Basically 15 million (plus or minus 50k) for the 4th straight week. And it's also closening the gap in demos. Glad to see an excellent show doing so well DSM shows consistency so the chances for a fuill season look good

As much was said in the first post that mentioned that number.
However, this is the only number that really matters to ABC/Disney since Warner Bros. is the studio in question and its their problem to recoup the rest, not ABC/Disney's.
