Hopefully these recent ratings for GW aren't an indicator of how it is creatively this season, because I can see people being turned off by Aiden and the time jump. That said, I'm still with it and have enjoyed it thus far -- they can't kill off someone from Melinda's life every year! Hopefully it'll increase, this "Shadows" storyline is pretty interesting.

No offense intended, but comments like this always make me laugh. Why do viewers hold grudges against networks because they cancel that particular viewers favorite series? I know it is cliche, but it is called "show business" after all. If a series isn't meeting the expectations of its network, it will be canceled. CBS had its reasons for canceling "Close to Home", even if they are not apparent or do not make sense to viewers. (Same thing applies to CBS's recent cancellation of "Without a Trace" which also has puzzled some fans.)
At least for me, a television show is just that...a show. Would I be disappointed if a series I liked was canceled? Of course, but I wouldn't hold a grudge and/or boycott that network, especially nearly two and a half years after said cancellation. Instead I would just find another series to replace it on my list of favorite shows.
Of course, that is just my opinion. For the record, I did not watch one episode of "Close to Home", just mentioning that in the matter of full disclosure.
I don't hold grudges if a show is canceled beacause of a valid reason, but i don't think stupidity is one. Cause dreaming of getting btter demos than 2.2-2.5 on fridays is pure stupidity. BTW is CBS is doing pretty much the same with Numb3rs right now. And i don't even like Numb3rs. If their plan is to find a new 10pm show next season that'll get better numbers then good luck, they really need it
CBS Friday often seems to find a way to start surging ratings-wise in around this time of year. Last year it was the cancellation of The Ex-List, the arrival of NCIS reruns, and an apparently compelling storyline on GW. But it sure doesn't seem like any such savior is coming down the pipe this year.
That said, I heartily disagree with the "Numb3rs is no weaker than GW" sentiment. This is the first time this season they've been on equal footing. On average GW has been about 0.3 stronger. They made the right call on reducing Numb3rs. It's the weak link. One data point does not erase the previous five. Fortunately, CBS will not completely change their worldview based on one week.

Calm down folks: CBS is still the #1 network on Friday by a significant margin. Until Ghost Whisperer drops below 6 million viewers, the night still belongs to CBS. And even at such depths, I bet it'll still be competitive in that weak Friday 8/7c hour.
As for the night overall, doom looms ever so near for broadcast television in general, as it keeps going lower and lower.
Meanwhile, USA Network keeps hitting it out of the park with a double dose of 4-5 million viewers/week each for Monk & White Collar.

I agree. The shadows has been interesting. The reason I stick with this show is because I love how she get's teary eyed at the end of each episode. It's heartwarming.

Never got into Ghost Whisperer.
Always thought it was a secondhand ripoff of Medium.
Of course, CBS doesn't mind having either show right now!

I used to be a huge Ghost Whisperer fan. Each season I like it less and less. I watched the season premiere this year and haven't been back since.
The first two seasons Jennifer Love Hewitt seemed to be playing Melinda Gordon and she was incredible. Now it just seems like Jennifer Love Hewitt is playing herself (minus the obvious factors) and I can't stand to watch it!

Personally, I have never been much of a fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt.

There has been an assumption that The Bridge and Flashpoint could do similar numbers to what are being done now by GW and Medium. Fpoint did high 1's with a much stronger lead in last year, and The Bridge is unproven.
GW - in the past it has picked up around this time, but I sense that will not happen this year. Prediction - cancelled at the end of the season. This ABC stuff is beside the point because if CBS thinks the show has degraded, CBS will not care what ABC might or might not do with it. It would not get the ratings on ABC it is getting this year on CBS, perhaps much worse. Also, CBS would have different and probably more network-brand programming to go against it in a rebuilt friday nite. GW will not be moved to Sunday this year or next.
Medium - still creatively strong ENOUGH, and this will matter in assessments by CBS of its future. But as I have said since last summer, this show is not a great fit on CBS, and don't let the fact that its numbers this year track what it did on NBC end of last year. My guess they are surprisingly different auds, with this year's aud full of casual viewers who will ditch the show for Dateline, L&O, and House and Bones repeats. The decision for CBS is "can we recapture some of the show's previous aud on a better nite and also feed it some of our network's aud?" Prediction - Medium will get a trial on Sunday nite at 10pm this spring of more than one ep. They will not renew it for that time period next year until they do this test.
Next season - I see The Good Wife entering the picture as the 8pm show. It will be older slanting but do enough TA to bring a viable demo that can then feed shows like Flashpoint or The Bridge or anything else that may develop between now and then. Neither GW or Medium will be on this nite. They will go the crime and legal route.

Originally posted by Julie: But back to CBS, they really need to think about moving things around. Seriously, losing to NBC and ABC in one night, the night they've won for so long, has to be a wake up call. Perhaps for midseason, CBS really will consider moving Ghost Whisperer/Medium to Sundays. If they leave them on Fridays, the chances of both returning for next season will be considerably lower.
If CBS leaves Friday night, then it really will become the 2nd television wasteland after Saturday. Plus, those 2 programs on Sunday will do about 2.3-2.5 in the 18-49 rating for each show.
Is it worth moving for such a slight uptick?
If CBS can find 2 Friday shows that can pull in the same 1.8-2.0, then yes. 2.3-2.5 would be a huge improvement for them on Sundays, while their Fridays would be maintained. Why not take the chance?
Or, like I said before, CBS could try moving Medium only to Sundays at 10pm to pair with Cold Case at 9pm. Medium could definitely help take away the already-declining Brothers & Sisters audience while improving the overall numbers of the night. Ghost Whisperer could fend for itself once again on Fridays, with Flashpoint/The Bridge going to 9pm. They have options, and it may be necessary to change things around soon.
Yes, CBS is much down on Fridays year-to-year. However, isn't CBS still #1 overall on the night? Don't play Musical Chairs with these shows just yet. And, I highly doubt such a move for Medium this season, especially since it has been doing okay in its current slot and of course, much better than its recent seasons on NBC.
By the way, did you see your beloved duo from BB11, Jeff and Jordan, on Bold and the Beautiful recently? And, did you check out...
They shouldn't play musical chairs YET, but if ratings don't pick up by December, I think we may very well see some changes. I think this week was just a roadblock, and that Law & Order should go back to its 7.5 million/1.5 demo next week at 8pm. I also think Ghost Whisperer and Medium should be able to get somewhere back to 8.5-9 million viewers in the coming weeks. But, if they don't, and these shows continue to hover around 7.5-8 million and below a 2.0 demo, I can't see them sticking with it.
And with Medium - it's currently averaging about the same it averaged last season, while still down a lot from the resurgent season 4, which averaged somewhere around 10 million. While it's still doing well, it certaintly still has the life left in it to do better.
BTW, I wholeheartedly agree with you on Ghost Whisperer - it's always been a second-hand Medium IMO. I tried watching it a couple seasons ago for a few episodes, but I just couldn't get into it. Jennifer Love Hewitt is definitely no Patricia Arquette.

Ghost Whisperer - fast food, at its best good fast food, but fast food
Medium - a restaurant you would take your wife to on your anniversary or a special date to
But as of now more people are watching GW than Medium, or about the same amount, and what many agree is the better show is dependent on the other show. So I think this is something CBS has to look at.

It today's TV universe, I think if C2H was still on the air, it wouldn't be getting the 2.2-2.5 demos is was getting a few years ago. I seem to remember that it was the weak link from GW to Numbers.
That said, it's true, nothing CBS has tried since has done any better -- except perhaps Medium -- in holding GW's audience.
