Though you wouldn't know it from following broadcast network ratings, summer TV viewing is at an all-time high.
According to a Turner research report, the average person watched a whopping 32.2 hours of TV per week this summer. In 2004, the average number of TV hours viewed during the summer was 29.8.
The gains were driven by cable TV programming, which continues to erode the traditional advantage of the Big Four networks.
Among new shows on ad-supported cable, the most-watched program was USA's "Royal Pains," with TNT's "The Closer" leading the list among returning shows.
Here are several Top 10 lists listing the most popular cable networks and shows this summer:

Five have already picked up Flash Forward and although it has not been announced yet, they have also picked up NCIS:LA.
I think moving CSI to 10pm is a good thing but I'm not sure how many seasons left CSI have once it is moved, It is still profitable to CBS through worldwide syndication but with ratings declining, it might be better to end it on a high.
I knew about Flash Forward, I'm really looking forward to this show. It's going to be one of those shows my whole family watches together (The only other shows we do that with is Lost, Fringe and Britain's Got Talent). I'm not a fan of NCIS but thanks for letting me know about :LA being picked up.
It's just getting a bit late into the summer, I thought a lot more shows would have been commissioned though.

Those should count for something too, right?
The problem with the CW is that they don't really know their audience. I'm the CW's target audience and my favourite show on their network is Supernatural, which Eric Kripke describes as "the goth kid sitting the back row in the CW class". They think all we want is pretty people and fashion (and ok, i'll watch ANTM and GG once in a while) but I like a little more depth in my shows. Look at the teen shows from 10 years ago like My So Called Life, they used to have heart and interesting characters to relate to, and they touched issues that matter. Nobody falls in love with CW's teen shows because they're too shallow. They're just guilty pleasures. The CW hasn't created ONE show people really love, and obviously that affects their ratings.
The problem isn't CW's target audience. The problem is that the CW fails at pleasing their target audience, and they'll never break out their ratings with Melrose Place remakes and TBL type shows. They have too many shows that feel like the same show. I'd suggest variety, every young woman is diferent after all. We'll see if Vampire Diaries is a step in the right direction, I hope so.
I totally agree. I'm not a girl but I am younger than their target demo and you totally hit the bull eyes. I get that with Gossip Girl and 90210 and Melrose Place you get pretty, young people and pretty clothes doing things that teens shouldn't do but so...? There isn't a lot of heart and why should I care about what happens to them? I know that I would rather watch Gilmore Girls, or Buffy, or Angel, or Charmed (At least Charmed decided to stop after 8 seasons Smallville!), and so on.
They do need more variety. It is possible to get young girlsa watching without the need of stick people and pretty clothes. (Also, Supernatural is totally my favorite CW show Its the only thing for me giving the network visibility.)
I fully agree here. I think Jeff is going to eventually kick himself for being so stupid and listening to Kevin. He deserves to get kicked out, although that leaves me with few to root for since Russell is also going to be gone. (Russell made an excellent point stating that it would be really stupid for Jeff to nominate him and piss off the other person in their alliance with the rest staying an making him their target.) My only hope is that Michele and Kevin then make the final 2. Michele has at least played the game well and Kevin has annoyed me the least with his gameplay. Jordan is an airhead who hasn't done a single thing except lay around and admire Jeff. Natalie is just too much of a b*tch for me to want to see win.

Jeff just showed his entire hand to the rest of the players: he cannot be trusted. Kevin and Natalie never did like/trust him and he has now turned off Michele. I predicted before he nominated Russell that such a move will guarantee his own exit from the game next week. I still believe that Jeff will leave next week, baring a veto victory. The only person he has left on his side is Jordan, someone who has not shown any skills in competitions. Unless Jordan wins the HOH competition on Thursday, any of the remaining players will likely nominate Jeff and Jordan for eviction. And after his display this week, I would greatly like to see Jeff talking with Julie next Thursday.

Everyone left in the game - except sad sack Natalie - have won something. But, the HOH victory came after Jeff purposely threw it in her favor and Jordan's POV victory, while unassisted by Jeff came down to a random guess by both Jordan and Michele.
Kevin, in contrast, has really started to play the game hardcore. Until now, he's been nothing more than window dressing and always able to rattle off a catty comment or two. Kevin did manage to spin a web of lies to entrap both Jeff and Jordan in and convince them that Russell was gunning for them (he may have been, but I doubt he would have nominated either this week if he were HOH) and also stepped up to win the Veto to ensure his safety during Jeff's pivotal coup d'etat week. Not to shabby if you ask me.

I'm still rooting for Jeff. Of the houseguests left I respect his gameplay the most - I at least respect the fact that he's been shaking up this game every since the coup de tat. Jeff isn't afraid to take risks in this game by turning off some people and turning on others. If Russell is evicted, which is probably the likely scenario, then all he has to do is mend ties with Michelle, which probably won't be too hard, and possibly Kevin for taking him off the block. It'll be interesting to see how things happen.
But Jordan is pretty and that makes me enjoy the show. She should be final three at least so I can look at her. I think Michelle is most deserving to win, followed by Jeff, and then Lydia's Poodle.

Exactly. That's why the WB was such a beloved network by teens. They had variety and shows with heart and interesting characters to root for. Who didn't love Buffy, Roswell, Gilmore Girls? And everytime people talk about their favourite CW shows they say Supernatural, OTH or Smallville (mostly SPN ), all WB shows. The CW creations just aren't as impactful. At best, they're just fun.
The NBC affiliate I work for just received word that the season premiere of Southland is being delayed by 4 weeks. It will be replaced by Dateline NBC until it premiers on October 23rd. The message goes on to say, "DATELINE has won this time period 2 of the last 3 weeks and has been very competitive all summer long. Keeping it here will advantage THE JAY LENO SHOW on its first few Fridays after launch..
I think it's a smart move. The expectations are pretty low for Southland, and Dateline is probably a more compatible audience for Leno.

That really doesn't make much sense to me. Even with Dateline doing well in summer airings, why would it do any better than Southland, especially with the compatible Law & Order lead-in? Not sure I understand this decision.

Agreed, I know people always want the WB back and truth is, the ratings for the WB were going down but I just want some more variety you know? A little variety will go a long way.

Same here, I think we need an official press release but part of what Dateline excels in is building throughout the 2 hours. I mean, I guess Dateline must be cheaper but still. Maybe NBC is seeing where medium and Ugly Betty end up in the ratings before premiering Southland? In a way, it makes sense I guess.
As Michael Scott said earlier this season, "How the turn tables!"
You liked Russell? The same Russell who continuously refers to Kevin as a "girl" and has tortured several in the house simply because he was bored or paranoid, while not taking advice from his own father (as noted in his HOH letter) to be more humble.
Whether Brussell (I mean, Russell ) stayed in the house or not, Jeff was gonna be a target in the near future. Jeff just made the first blow. Plus, the odds of Kevin and Gnat-alie winning anything were much less than the more-willing competitors of the most disgusting duo of the house, Brussell & B***h-ele.
Finally, Jeff has shown some game moxie that was not provided to him by some magical mystery powers. He thought it up his own self! And, I agree with him urging on girlfriend Jordan to start becoming more of a force within this game instead of the spineless jellyfish she currently is in game play.
Congratulations, Jeff - you are now atop of the Big Brother class! (Took ya long enough!)
