Prime-Time Ratings:
Friday 10/05/07

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.83 million, NBC: 7.38, ABC: 5.45, Fox and CW: 4.18 each

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 2.4 rating/8 share, NBC: 2.1/ 7, ABC: 1.8/ 6, Fox and CW: 1.4/ 5 each

--------------------

-Friday’s Winners:
Ghost Whisperer (CBS), Moonlight (CBS). Numb3rs (CBS)

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Nothing. Ratings for Friday continue to erode, but a respectable opening for NBC’s Friday Night Lights and three hours of repeat programming has kept the list of losers bare this week.

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating comparisons are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from approximately 9 percent last fall to about 20 million percent at present, the overall rating results may be negatively impacted. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the next day numbers.

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS won this second Friday of the new season, with a first-place finish in total viewers and adults 18-49. But the overall network results, however, remain down considerably from one year earlier. Second overall was NBC, followed by ABC, and Fox and the CW tied for the No. four and five spots (in total viewers and adults 18-49).

CBS’ Ghost Whisperer kicked-off the evening on a winning note, with 8.71 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Compared to the year-ago evening (Viewers: 9.77 million; A18-49: 2.8/10 on Oct. 6, 2006), that was a loss of 1.06 million viewers and 14 percent in the demo. Second was NBC’s Deal or No Deal, with a competitive 8.26 million viewers and a 2.1/ 7 among adults 18-49, followed by Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: 5.02 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 6), a repeat of ABC’s Pushing Daisies (Viewers: 4.26 million; A18-49: 1.4/ 5), and the first half of the CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: 3.82 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 5). With Deal or No Deal heading into first-run syndication in fall 2008, NBC would be wise not to over-exposure the game show in prime-time and replace the Friday telecast with benchwarmer 1 vs. 100.

Keep in mind that ABC’s new Friday line-up -- 20/20, The Women’s Murder Club and Men in Trees -- begins next Friday, Oct. 12.

Week two of CBS’ Moonlight was the most-watched show at 9 p.m., but it tied the season-premiere of NBC’s Friday Night Lights for first among adults 18-49. Take a look:

Friday 9 p.m.
Moonlight (CBS)
Viewers: 8.25 million (#1), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1t)

Friday Night Lights (NBC)
Viewers: 6.48 million (#2), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1t)

The positive news for Moonlight was retention out of the compatible Ghost Whisperer of 95 percent in total viewers and 92 percent among adults 18-49, and a loss of just 290,000 viewers and 12 percent in the demo from its debut one week earlier (Viewers: 8.54 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 8 on Sept. 28). Friday Night Lights, meanwhile, deserves accolades for holding 96 percent of the adult 18-49 rating out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Deal or No Deal (2.3/ 8).

Also airing in the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of ABC’s Private Practice (Viewers: 4.92 million; A18-49: 1.6/ 5), the second half of the CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: 4.55 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 5), and a repeat of Fox’s K-Ville (Viewers: 3.33 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 4). Overall, Friday Night Smackdown! averaged 4.18 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m.

First in the 10 p.m. hour was CBS’ Numb3rs (Viewers: 9.53 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 9), followed by NBC’s Las Vegas (Viewers: #2, 7.41 million; A18-49: #3, 2.2/ 7), and ABC’s 20/20 (Viewers: #3, 7.18 million; A18-49: #2, 2.4/ 8) sharing the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

Great news for Moonlight and I still say this show's going to end up being a surprise hit despite not being a critic favorite and the intial viewer response being mostly negative ..

Las Vegas is down about 2 million viewers from its season premiere, ooh thats not good. I hope it can pull out. And mabye they should switch Las Vegas to the 8pm hour and then do encores in the 10 pm hour for NBC

Reminds me of Ghost Whisperer a few years ago. Pretty much every critic panned the show and said it would be one of the first shows canceled.

I just wish FNL had done better in total viewers.

Moonlight skews very old for the type of show it wants to be. CBS wanted to bring younger viewers to their friday lineup.
Mission failed.

Did they fire ED or did he quit the show?
I was wondering cause I love Las Vegas, and also Monday in the 10pm hour would be good for Las Vegas. Journeyman is gonna get cancelled anyway.

Well they were basically right. GW is nothing nore than a filler show. You can hardly call it a hit

As a fan of Las Vegas, I'm not at all surprised by the numbers. Tom Selleck just doesn't fit in on the show. He's pretty much terrible. James Caan he is not. The show doesn't even have the same feel anymore, it's totally different and not in a good way.

How are those numbers for Friday Night Lights compared to when it aired last season?

Hardly a failure .. CBS may want younger viewers but the shows bringing in the ratings/demos are mature viewers and by now CBS should get the message .. Not only young people watch television and many older people are watching too and are loyal viewers ..

No, they were completely wrong. This isn't about being a hit. It's about still being on the air and performing admirably on a night when very few people are home.

U are absolutely right, but tell that to CBS. They cancelled Close to Home which was doing 10+ million viewers and 2.5 in demos beacause it skewed so old. If Moonlight stays at this levels it will be lucky to survive one season. But nothing more
