My (younger) sister loves DWTS--and she also loves Rescue Me and Nip/Tuck. And I can't stand any of those shows. But just making the point that you can like hard-edged controversial dramas, and still like fluffy shows about minor celebrities having a dance-off. There's really no need for people to read the DWTS ratings and fear for the future of western civilization. That's what elections are for. Though a bit less of late.
Who could have ever predicted that a show with a number of "mediocre" stars where the focus of the show is dancing could get such huge ratings? Is the audience mostly the old American Bandstand viewership now grown up? I watch Gilmore Girls and tape NCIS, so I admit that I've never seen this show. What is the big attraction?

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people just like to watch dancing. It conflicts with too many shows for my schedule, but I did enjoy it in the beginning simply because I will watch any kind of ballroom/salsa/etc dancing.
As for the stars, it's a big American ideals things. The underdog, the fallen star, rising up into the public eye again. It's like seeing a familiar friend with some of them, and it's kind of fun. Again, I've only watched a couple eps but I think that's the draw.
I pretty much agree with the above explanation. I enjoy watching dancing ever since I was a kid and even liked Dance Fever.... I also loved seeing Mario Lopez and after watching that, wonder why he isn't more successful in showbiz.... he really seems like he can do anything he sets his mind to. My point being that perhaps not all of these folks should be considered "mediocre".... it's just the marketing and the media that creates that image.
I would not use the retention numbers to charactarize the status of a show . Look at Brothers & Sisters retention out of DH. How u call that? I believe that the number of viewers is what really counts, and if the show that's before u gives u a helping hand that's your luck. And to VM fans i can only say that they're avereging almost 1 million viewers less than OTH. So considering OTH as a loser is pushing the numbers quite a lot
I had never watched Veronica Mars, but my daughter loves it and recently gave me Season One on DVD. I can see why VM has fans! And I can understand fan loyalty because I am secretly one of those Firefly fans who still waits for the miracle that will return Firefly to television, (even though they killed off a couple of guys in the movie!....)
As for Pisher and Gee.... I don't read the VM Forum, but at other places around this site they frequently write comments that I enjoy very much! I hope Marc never has to ban anybody! (We ALL need to be here for the day when Firefly and Joss Whedon return in triumph!)

isn't it odd how ABC is programming their sweeps? I mean, preempting Boston Legal for half the sweeps period when it's one of their strongest 10pm show especially when you consider lead in, ending Dancing and Lost before the midway point of sweeps instead of running them deeper into sweeps, wasting that awesome timeslot following dancing with "show me the money", deciding to finally put "trees" in the post grey's slot but waiting 3 weeks, and preempting Brothers and Sisters for BL that they bumped for Show Me The Money when BL could have done better...

Leading out of Dancing With the Stars was the 90-minute premiere of cheesy new game show Show Me the Money, hosted by the over-the-top William Shatner. Although no one expected Show Me the Money to maintain lead-in levels from Dancing With the Stars, 12.54 million viewers and a 3.9/11 among adults 18-49 from 9:30-11 p.m. was a loss of a too significant 14.18 million viewers and 48 percent among adults 18-49. Show Me the Money also declined significantly in each half-hour as follows:
Show Me the Money 9:30 p.m. Viewers: 15.72 million (#2), A18-49: 4.8/12 (#2)
10:00 p.m. Viewers: 12.38 million (#2), A18-49: 4.0/11 (#2)
10:30 p.m. Viewers: 9.52 million (#3), A18-49: 2.9/ 9 (#2)
If you think the VM fans are bad, here's something that will give you a good laugh. Years ago I mentioned that PAX was wasting its schedule on repeats of Diagnosis Murder, and a back of rapid DM fans (including a 12 year-old girl!) went balistic. I received angry emails for weeks.

I think abc is pushing for something new everyweek...pushing ppl to tune in or lose out...since this season started it seems that everything on a weekly basis changes...
example, week one we saw dwts premier week two was the rollout of most of their shows week three was the rest of their shows led by "lost" after that more comedies, and brian came...than we have the finale's of dwts/lost/awards shows and the mit moves plus new shows...its like they push and push to get everyone to look...better than the other nets that are sitting there...plus they have a kick-ass advertising department...abc has done a good job...their gamble has paid off...

Wow, never knew that Diagnosis Murder fans were so fiesty....or all that plentiful! Never underestimate a show's following, I suppose!
