I posted this yesterday but it was the weekend so I guess not many saw this. I need to know your thoughts about this:

The most frustrating statistic for me to obtain is daytime sporting events. Last month, Zedman2 suggested only including primetime sporting events for our game and my response was that receiving the viewer numbers for sporting events take a week later than all the other week's programs because that's what media life magazine's site does and so, you have to be patient.

However, I have recently done some research into the publishing of sports ratings on that site and the scary thing is the site doesn't publish this list for each week of the 52 weeks in a year. What made me think about this was when I thought about including the Indianapolis 500 for this game. I didn't find any viewer numbers on this event on that media life site because they don't publish any lists for the week leading up to Memorial Day.

I'd like for all entries in this game to have definitive ratings information but it's this sports dilemma that gives me most thought. I am able to get viewer numbers for the following: sports at night times and any big sport events on cable AND the Household Rating of network broadcasts of sporting events in the daytime. But it's the "viewer numbers" of network broadcasts of sporting events in the daytime that's the focus.

So I have a proposition, starting for the next game, Game #27: I'll continue to use sporting events, both in primetime and daytime, but for daytime events, I'll use the household ratings only for them and of course, base their rank on household ratings of primetime shows. Unless someone here has quick access to daytime sports viewer numbers each week, I'm going to go this route. Using the household ratings, at least we won't all have to wait that extra week for sports viewer numbers to come in.

Let me know what you all think by posting your thoughts here and/or in the Game #26 discussion thread (link posted below).

In relation to the Baseball question, it is TBS that will be hosting the LCS for at least the next 7 years (alternating the american and national league). They will also host ALL of the first round games. FOX wil still show all the worls series games.

How much less, exactly? How is the scheduling going to be less intrusive? Is it the amount of hours, or specific nights? How exactly will it affect the FOX prime-time schedule?

This is from a Variety article regardsing FOX upfront announcement:

But it's what's not on the schedule that might help Fox snap out of its usual fall doldrums. Now that Fox shares the Major League Baseball playoffs with Turner, the net will preempt only 14 of its nights in October, compared to 26 in recent years -- including just one preemption apiece on Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Thanks for the info Hawk-eye, Joe7148 and Zedman2...FOX clearly can now work on shaping up what has been a mess in prime-time for years. Baseball may have brought in some demo advantages, but I think that advantage is hit-and-miss at best, as ratings for baseball have been on the decline (though match-up in the games has some influence here). As far as prime time entertainment programming goes, they can start to become more aggressive in the fall and add to the advantage "AI" gives them in January.

Here's the answer to that question, from Lenny Shulman from news.bloodhorse.com...

Overnight ratings for NBC’s telecast of the May 19 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) registered a slight decrease from a year ago, when Barbaro attracted much attention for the second jewel of racing’s Triple Crown. NBC reported a 5.4 rating and a 13 share of the audience for this year’s Preakness telecast, which aired from 5 p.m.-6:48 p.m. ET. That represented a 5% dip from 2006’s 5.7/14. One ratings point equals 770,000 viewers in overnight ratings, and the 13 share represents the percentage of televisions in use that were tuned to the race.

This year’s Kentucky Derby telecast drew an 8.3/18 in the overnights.

The race segment of the Preakness show, from 6-6:30 p.m., attracted a 7.4 rating. NBC reported that the Preakness telecast was the highest rated sports show of the day, far outdistancing FOX’s baseball coverage of the New York Yankees—New York Mets tilt. Since NBC took over the Preakness in 2001, the average overnight rating for the telecast has been a 6, up by more than a third from the previous seven years, the network said.

The top 10 markets for the Preakness telecast were: 1) Baltimore (21/41); 2) Louisville (16.5/34); 3) Buffalo (12.6/30); 4) West Palm Beach (11.9/25); 5) Columbus (10.8/22); 6) Orlando (10.8/20); 7) Fort Myers (10/19); 8) St. Louis (9.3/20); 9) Cleveland (9/19); and 10) Knoxville (9/18).

I agree x. Time shifted viewing and online viewing included, I'm thinking the numbers wouldn't be that bad.

Percent Change – Viewers: -24, A18-49: -29

Both shows still merit being labeled a winner, but ABC had better hope the erosion slows down in 2007-08.

ABC and The CW are the only two broadcast networks to show year-over-year improvement in both A18-49 after 25 days of the May Sweep.
