Welcome aboard Squizz44. NBC's The Office was respectable at 8.43 million viewers and a 4.2 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, but 30 Rock sunk to just 5.19 million viewers and a 2.4/ 6 in the demo.

As far as quality for GH, the emmy's speak for themselves. They have won for best show 5 times since 97 including the last 2 years.
Daytime Emmys
Show 2006 "Outstanding Drama Series" 2005 "Outstanding Drama Series" 2000 "Outstanding Drama Series" 1999 "Outstanding Drama Series" 1997 "Outstanding Drama Series"
I know that the ABC line-up, particularly the demos, had significant drop offs this summer, no matter what spin ABC is trying to put on it. I also know that Y & R and B&B's ratings have remained steady, ATWT's ratings I believe have gone up, and Days has made some improvement, while GH has dropped significantly, as well as ABC daytime as a whole.
As far as Emmys go, receiving a daytime Emmys ceased to prove anything when Natalia Livingstone won for best supporting actress on GH and a few years earlier and the girl sounds like she's reading lines off a cue card and does not emote and has the worst acting tics ever. GH won those Emmys because they slapped together some clips that looked good for the voting academy to vote on, because the voters don't watch every episode or even a lot of episode. The show puts together a couple of shows to be voted on and they just happened to have a few good ones. Just because they can put together a few good shows to submit for emmys doesn't speak for the quality of the show, because 11 months out of the year the show is a complete mess. They write for plot points, not characters, and retcon things from one month to the next, and destroy characters to prop a few of the writers chosen favorites. The show is a complete mess right now and I would bet money that when Genie leaves, the ratings will drop back down to where they were before her return was announced, which was hovering around 2.3/2.4.
Originally posted by Lisa Mikol: Zedman2--I am aware of all that, but GH (as well as all ABC soaps) experienced a big drop this summer in ratings that continued until Genie's return was announced. It was after her return was announced in September (which I believe is around when they consider the season starting) that their ratings started going back up again. Right now I think GH is the only one of ABC's soaps that is up as well (and again, that's only been since the announcement and then return of Genie Francis). OLTL and AMC are now being beaten by Guiding Light and the only soap they are beating is Passions, whereas before they were beating Guiding Light and a few other shows as well.
Pull up some ratings from early September and prior to that and you will see what I'm talking about. The only reason ABC daytime is up right now is due to Genie Francis returning and the press they are getting for that (because ABC sure didn't promote it all that well). Once she leaves, I am sure we will see their ratings drop again. During the summer, ABC's entire daytime line-up fell in the demos and they were being beaten by CBS's line-up. I think NBC even beat them for a week or more, pushing ABC's line up to #3.
Until the week of July 17-21 2006, ABC's soap lineup was number one for 79 straight weeks in the demo. Since the streak ended they have been number one or number two in the demo by one or two tenths of a point. Comparatively, all ratings are down for all three networks in daytime vrs prior years but Genie Francis return isn't driving ABC's numbers as they are consistently number one.
Prior to Genie's return being announced, GH's overall ratings had dropped to where they were getting 2.3 to 2.5 and had fallen to #3 in the 18-49 year old demo. This occurred after the summer of sleaze. Also, while all soaps are down from what they once were (which is not entirely because of cable tv and women working, but also because the quality of soaps isn't as good as it used to be, mostly with the writing), most of the other soaps have remained steady in the ratings this past year while all ABC soaps are down this year.

Tell me about it. The thing is, Genie wants to stay on, but TIIC of GH do not feel there is room for her on the show. She's an icon and her character helped save GH from cancellation in the 70s, so it's very idiotic that she isn't being offered whatever she wants to stay.
Not sure how you can say the show is a complete mess.....there has been some great stuff...drama and comedy all rolled into one.
-I think some of the good points have been: -Alexis cancer story -Lucky's drug addiction/relationship with Maxie -the whole Luke/Tracy relationship -Sonny/Carly/Jax -Jason/Sam -Robin/Patrick
As I said in an earlier post, 5 episodes a week, 52 weeks a year, there are bound to be some ups/downs. Guza does a fine job with the writing.
As for your comment on the emmys, I guess Y&R and the others could not even pull together a clip from their hours of 'great' television!

Alexis' cancer story has been more about Sam and very little about Alexis. While Lucky's drug addiction story has gotton slightly better, it was poorly executed and very unrealistic in the way it was written. It was also very much rushed in the beginning and inserting Jason into this storyline made the entire thing lead to showing how terrible Lucky is compared to Jason's "can do no wrong" greatness. The Sonny/Carly/Jax stuff is horrible. Jason and Sam are horrible and boring and repetitive. Robin and Patrick are hardly ever on and barely get any screen time.
I think Guza is a terrible writer. In his tenure, he has destroyed many long term characters by writing for his plot points and to prop his favorites and keep his "Sopranos-lite" going with his mobsters and particularly his golden boy Jason as good guys while portraying the cops and DAs as corrupt and inept. He focuses on only a few characters who have not been off the frontburner for years. Every story has to involve Sonny, Carly or Jason in some way shape or form. This summer it was Carly in every story. Now it's Sonny. Both are written as loathesome characters who we are told constantly about how wonderful they are when their actions say otherwise. And they are forced upon us. I don't watch Y&R and have stopped watching the other ABC soaps, but GH does manage to only put a couple of good episodes together a year for emmy clips and the rest of the year is pretty much crap, and they have been called on this by many in the soap press.
