-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 4.7 rating/12 share, CBS and NBC: 4.0/10 each, Fox: 2.5/ 6, CW: 1.1/ 3

----------

How I Met Your Mother (CBS), Journeyman (NBC)

-Fading:
Prison Break (Fox)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):

---------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 8.54 percent during premiere week in 2006 to 19.43 million percent at present, the overall results have, no doubt, been negatively impacted.

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC opened this second Monday of the 2007-08 season first in total viewers, with a hefty 5.06 million advantage over second-place CBS, and first among coveted adults 18-49 as a result of blockbuster Dancing With the Stars. A two-hour edition of the dance extravaganza averaged a whopping 20.34 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. With a lead-in of the magnitude, it is a shame the network is wasting it on veteran reality/competition The Bachelor, which finished a distant second behind CBS’ CSI: Miami, with 9.58 million viewers and a 3.6/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 10-11 p.m. Comparably, that put retention for The Bachelor out of the last half-hour of Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 21.34 million; A18-49: 5.4/13 at 9:30 p.m.) of just 45 percent in total viewers and 67 percent in the demo, The Bachelor will certainly not benefit once unproven sitcom Samantha Who steps into the 9:30 p.m. time period on Oct. 15.

CBS was close to opening week levels from one week earlier with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #2, 7.88 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.0/ 8), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #2, 8.58 million; A18-49: #2, 3.4/ 8), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #2, 13.38 million; A18-49: #3, 4.6/11), Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #3, 10.54 million; A18-49: #3, 3.9/ 9), and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 14.88 million; A18-49: #1, 4.6/11). The positive news for The Big Bang Theory was growth out of lead-in How I Met Your Mother of 700,000 viewers and 13 percent among adults 18-49, and a performance close to its week-ago debut. One year earlier, former occupant How I Met Your Mother (out of failed comedy The Class) was slightly higher at 9.32 million viewers and a 3.6/ 9 in the demo (based on the final nationals on Oct. 2, 2006). Retention for Rules of Engagement out of Two and a Half Men, meanwhile, was 79 percent in viewers and 85 percent among adults 18-49.

Week two of NBC’s Chuck averaged 8.22 million viewers (#3) and a 3.1/ 8 (#3) among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. While this is down considerably from former occupant Deal or No Deal (Viewers: 13.16 million; A18-49: 3.7/10 on Oct. 2, 2006), retention from last week’s debut (Viewers: 9.21 million; A18-49: 3.6/ 9 on Sept. 24) was positive at 89 percent in viewers and 86 percent among adults 18-49.

Lead-out Heroes tied the second half of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars for first among adults 18-9, with a 5.5/13 in the demo from 9-10 p.m. But Heroes was third overall in total viewers, with 11.94 million. One year earlier, Heroes averaged 12.96 million viewers and an equal 5.5/13 among adults 18-49. Week two of 10 p.m. occupant Journeyman capped off the evening for NBC third in both total viewers at 10 p.m. (8.39 million) and adults 18-49 (3.3/ 8). While that was on par with year-ago occupant Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and close to week-ago debut levels, retention out of Heroes of just 70 percent in total viewers and 60 percent among adults 18-49 means it is inching closer to the loser’s listing.

Over at Fox, recently introduced drama K-Ville continues to slide, with week three at 5.78 million viewers (#4) and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4). One week earlier, week two of K-Ville averaged 6.13 million viewers and a 2.3/ 5 in the demo. Retention out of deteriorating lead-in Prison Break (Viewers: #4, 7.22 million; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 8 at 8 p.m.) was 85 percent in total viewers but just 65 percent among adults 18-49. One year earlier, Prison Break was considerably stronger with 8.99 million viewers and a 3.8/10 in the demo on Oct. 2, 2006.

If there is one description for the CW’s opening Monday it is low-rated compatibility, with the four comedies faring as follows:

The CW/Monday
8:00 p.m. Everybody Hates Chris – season premiere – Viewers: 2.58 million, A18-49: 1.0/ 3
8:30 p.m. Aliens in America – Viewers: 2.33 million, A18-49: 0.8/ 2
9:00 p.m. Girlfriends – Viewers: 2.59 million, A18-49: 1.2/ 3
9:30 p.m. The Game – Viewers: 2.99 million, A18-49: 1.4/ 3

Overall, this was down by 270,000 viewers and 15 percent among adults 18-49 from the return of the CW’s Monday sitcom block on Monday, Oct. 16, 2007. Growth in the 9 p.m. hour saves Girlfriends and The Game from being labeled a loser, but there is no escape for Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America.

Really depressing numbers. At this rate every new show will be cancelled. Incredibly the best result appears to be for Journeyman.
And Heroes will slowly tumble down. And please no more DVR excuses. It;s a factor i don't deny it but evry poor result is now justified by that
And who wiuld've thought Chuck skews so old? 0.3 below BBT in demos

I think The Big Bang Theory is holding up very, very well. It is beating HIMYM the past two weeks, and its numbers are close to The Class. Just remember, The Class was not up against Dancing With The Stars and that is a huge factor. If there was no DWTS than BBT would have incredible numbers. Nice job by BBT.

Darn. I'm kind of sad for Aliens. I thought it was going to be much worse than it was, and I was actually pleasantly surprised by it. Oh well. You can't win them all, I guess. ;-)

Huh...well, I guess the CW shows were somewhat on par with last season, with the exception of Everybody Hates Chris.

Peace!!

Marc,

I think you are a little crazy saying the Big Bang Theory could be better/could be worse. I mean the show is # 2 in its time slot behind Dancing With The Stars. That is very, very good. I mean do you really think it was going to beat DWTS ?

That Rules of Engagement number pretty much proves that last week's performance was all about DwtS, and that it's not any more compatible with 2.5Men.

Shame about HIMYM, though is 8.58 million really "close" to 9.52 million for The Big Bang Theory?

I thought Aliens in America would at least be on par, those numbers aren't encouraging. I think this one suffered from no real promotion. Still, considering the numbers and the lead-in, it's actually a little better for the night than Gossip Girl is doing. At least retention numbers aren't dismal, just disappointing. CW's only real luck seems to be with Reaper. It depends on how it does tonight, however.

I don't care for the Big Bang Theory (lost me after just ten minutes) but those aren't bad numbers considering the lead-in. CBS will nurture this one, and I think they might end up plugging Old Christine in to HIMYM's slot come midseason if it continues to be the worst performer of the sitcom bunch.

K-Ville is starting to really crumble, and Prison Break is fading (but still far from dead). K-Ville will probably make it through to mid-season, but it won't be around this May... Maybe FOX will pull a stand-off and greenlight a whole season then burn them off during summer at under 3 million for originals...

Chuck is holding up well, and I think NBC will be patient. I think maybe they should put it on after HEROES. Both shows appeal to the "comic book geek" type crowd, and the biggest thing people keep saying is that HEROES is too dark to be followed by another dark show. Maybe following up with Chuck would be a better fit. Journeyman just isn't all that buzz-worthy.

Marc, I laugh every time I read that... Wink

CBS should shuffle in CHRISTINE behind MEN. Creativly its a much better show than RULES and cetainly more funny. Megan Pryce was so good in GROUNDED. What's she doing in this garbage?

Checked out BIG BANG for the first time to see what the hype was about. I laughed once maybe twice but seriously...The entire show should have ended the minute she found out the guys had trespassed in her place. Not only would she have never spoken to them again but she would have called the police too. For all she knew they could be closet rapists...very poor show.

I think CHUCK will eventually do a slow fade like the awesome SURFACE did two years ago.

Saddest news is about PRISON BREAK...its such a good show-I'm sorry its getting anihlatd by DANCING were the female viewers have no doubt fled too without the onscreen Michael/Sarah chemistry.

K-VILLE looks to be a breath away from Cancellation. Does anyone thing FOX should use SARAH CONNOR as the replacement for PRISON BREAK in the SPRING instead of intended K-VILLE which will be long gone by then?

P.S. I'm actually more excitd about the ratings results this week to see how the news shows fair after being curiosity sampled last week.

I am not surprised that the CW did as poor as it did, but I was thinking that maybe AIA would rise above it because of the good word of mouth or something. Guess not. What's really surprising is The Game at nearly 3 million. How did that happen?!. Lol. That's better than the second episodes of Gossip Girl and Beauty And The Geek!.

The CW is just in an awful state. Their one new comedy being the lowest out of all four, especially since Girlfriends is a bit of a dinosaur? Ouch.

I kinda expected the Heroes erosion. Television is just becoming so much harder these days. You have DWTS dominating for most of the season, and then AI takes over afterward. It's a bloodbath.

Chuck does worse in demos than Journeyman. Ouch!
K-Ville has the hours counted. Big Bang depends on how much time CBS offers it. It does rather well but i give it 50-50 chances for a full season
