-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC opened this second Monday of the 2007-08 season first in total viewers, with a hefty 5.06 million advantage over second-place CBS, and first among coveted adults 18-49 as a result of blockbuster Dancing With the Stars. A two-hour edition of the dance extravaganza averaged a whopping 20.34 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. With a lead-in of the magnitude, it is a shame the network is wasting it on veteran reality/competition The Bachelor, which finished a distant second behind CBS’ CSI: Miami, with 9.58 million viewers and a 3.6/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 10-11 p.m. Comparably, that put retention for The Bachelor out of the last half-hour of Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 21.34 million; A18-49: 5.4/13 at 9:30 p.m.) of just 45 percent in total viewers and 67 percent in the demo, The Bachelor will certainly not benefit once unproven sitcom Samantha Who steps into the 9:30 p.m. time period on Oct. 15.
CBS was close to opening week levels from one week earlier with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #2, 7.88 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.0/ 8), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #2, 8.58 million; A18-49: #2, 3.4/ 8), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #2, 13.38 million; A18-49: #3, 4.6/11), Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #3, 10.54 million; A18-49: #3, 3.9/ 9), and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 14.88 million; A18-49: #1, 4.6/11). The positive news for The Big Bang Theory was growth out of lead-in How I Met Your Mother of 700,000 viewers and 13 percent among adults 18-49, and a performance close to its week-ago debut. One year earlier, former occupant How I Met Your Mother (out of failed comedy The Class) was slightly higher at 9.32 million viewers and a 3.6/ 9 in the demo (based on the final nationals on Oct. 2, 2006). Retention for Rules of Engagement out of Two and a Half Men, meanwhile, was 79 percent in viewers and 85 percent among adults 18-49.
Week two of NBC’s Chuck averaged 8.22 million viewers (#3) and a 3.1/ 8 (#3) among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. While this is down considerably from former occupant Deal or No Deal (Viewers: 13.16 million; A18-49: 3.7/10 on Oct. 2, 2006), retention from last week’s debut (Viewers: 9.21 million; A18-49: 3.6/ 9 on Sept. 24) was positive at 89 percent in viewers and 86 percent among adults 18-49.
Lead-out Heroes tied the second half of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars for first among adults 18-9, with a 5.5/13 in the demo from 9-10 p.m. But Heroes was third overall in total viewers, with 11.94 million. One year earlier, Heroes averaged 12.96 million viewers and an equal 5.5/13 among adults 18-49. Week two of 10 p.m. occupant Journeyman capped off the evening for NBC third in both total viewers at 10 p.m. (8.39 million) and adults 18-49 (3.3/ 8). While that was on par with year-ago occupant Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and close to week-ago debut levels, retention out of Heroes of just 70 percent in total viewers and 60 percent among adults 18-49 means it is inching closer to the loser’s listing.
Over at Fox, recently introduced drama K-Ville continues to slide, with week three at 5.78 million viewers (#4) and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4). One week earlier, week two of K-Ville averaged 6.13 million viewers and a 2.3/ 5 in the demo. Retention out of deteriorating lead-in Prison Break (Viewers: #4, 7.22 million; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 8 at 8 p.m.) was 85 percent in total viewers but just 65 percent among adults 18-49. One year earlier, Prison Break was considerably stronger with 8.99 million viewers and a 3.8/10 in the demo on Oct. 2, 2006.
If there is one description for the CW’s opening Monday it is low-rated compatibility, with the four comedies faring as follows:
The CW/Monday
8:00 p.m. Everybody Hates Chris – season premiere – Viewers: 2.58 million, A18-49: 1.0/ 3
8:30 p.m. Aliens in America – Viewers: 2.33 million, A18-49: 0.8/ 2
9:00 p.m. Girlfriends – Viewers: 2.59 million, A18-49: 1.2/ 3
9:30 p.m. The Game – Viewers: 2.99 million, A18-49: 1.4/ 3
Overall, this was down by 270,000 viewers and 15 percent among adults 18-49 from the return of the CW’s Monday sitcom block on Monday, Oct. 16, 2007. Growth in the 9 p.m. hour saves Girlfriends and The Game from being labeled a loser, but there is no escape for Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America.
