Prime Time Metered Market Tuesday Ratings: Fox Dominates, DOA Return for The CW’s Veronica Mars
Tuesday 5/01/07 Metered Market Ratings
Household Rating/Share Fox 14.6/22 ABC 7.3/11 CBS 6.9/11 NBC 6.3/10 CW 2.3/ 3
----------
-Percent Change From the Comparable Year-Ago Evening (Tuesday 5/02/06) (The CW is compared to Gilmore Girls and Pepper Dennis on the WB) ABC: +52, NBC: + 2, Fox: - 9, CBS: -15, CW: -18
----------
-American Idol Update: Although Jordin Sparks is no rocker and deserves to bid adieu after last night’s abysmal performance, the momentum from previous weeks (not to mention the votes from one week earlier) will keep her very much alive. Golden girl Melinda Doolittle and the always unique Blake Lewis should also have no trouble moving on to next week. So, that leaves Chris “Justin Timberfake” Richardson, LaKisha “You Go, Girl!” Jones and surprise survivor Phil Stacey. While it could be any of the three at this point (and her weak performance from last week could hurt LaKisha), my pick to depart (as usual) is nice guy Phil.

-Ratings Breakdown: Fox, of course, ruled the Tuesday roost with its combination of American Idol and House. ABC was second in the overnights based on the strength of Dancing With the Stars, followed by CBS, NBC and The CW. To the fans of Veronica Mars: my condolences. Based on a 1.6 rating/2 share for its return at 9 p.m., it has to be officially over at this point.
American Idol opened the evening for Fox with a hefty 16.2 rating/25 share in the overnights at 8 p.m. Although the year-ago performance was stronger at a 17.3/26, comparably this still bested the No. 2 occupant, CBS’ NCIS (9.1/14), by 78 percent. Third behind American Idol and NCIS was a Tuesday edition of NBC’s overused Dateline (4.4/ 7), followed by two episodes of ABC’s on-the-bubble George Lopez (avg. 3.4/ 5), and The CW’s tired Gilmore Girls (3.0/ 5). Despite a year-to-year loss of 25 percent (3.0/ 5 vs. 4.0/ 6 on the WB on May 2, 2006), Gilmore Girls is expected-to-be renewed for a final 13 episodes next season.
Fox’s House won the 9 p.m. hour, with a 13.1/19 in the overnights. But ABC also deserves accolades for the Dancing With the Stars live results show, which scored an 11.4/17. Comparably, that built from the 8:30 p.m. edition of lead-in George Lopez (3.4/ 5) by 235 percent.
A distant third at 9 p.m. was CBS’ The Unit (6.2/ 9), followed by Law & Order: Criminal Intent on NBC (5.7/ 8), and the return of the aforementioned Veronica Mars on The CW (1.6/ 2). Comparably, retention for Veronica Mars out of Gilmore Girls was just 53 percent.
NBC’s fading Law & Order: SVU dominated at 10 p.m., with an 8.8/14 in the overnights. But erosion of 25 percent from one year earlier (11.8/18 on May 2, 2006) means that one of the competing networks could make inroads in the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour next season. Second at 10 p.m. was ABC’s Boston Legal (7.4/12), followed by a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY at a 5.3/ 9. Considering how well Judging Amy fared in this hour, how about a similarly themed female-oriented drama next season, Eye net?
Well it did say the 8:30 edition was also a 3.4 but GLo sometimes perks up a bit when middle Americas results come in. As for the fans of VM: it was a nice try to increase viewership again, but I just don't see this series ever becoming a massive hit.

Well since ABC tends to forget that GLo is on and the fact that the episodes are switched about every 10 seconds, its really no surprise. People might've thought they were both new, like it was originally planned. If it hits 5 million, I'll be happy.

Which one was a repeat? They were both listed as originals.

The 8pm was. When ABC pulled the first of the new Tuesday GLo's, each week got pushed back one week so we are actually seeing what was supposed to be last week's episodes which was repeat and original. Confusing I know.

You're forgetting it's a double elimination Marc....and since they're combining the votes (which isn't exactly fair because of the special last week-this time only they should use percentages and not votes, because this week's vote total will only likely be 30-35 million compared to the 70 million last week), Lakisha is probably gone based on her bad performance last week, with Chris or Phil the other cut (but both guys could go).
Note to fans of Veronica Mars: don't blame the messenger!
Well, what's their alternative? Blaming the show? The show that has gotten horrible ratings for three straight seasons, in several timeslots, with the strongest available lead-ins, on two different networks, with strong critical support until recently?
Wow. The VM ratings are actually worse than I expected. They had a major PR push this week, between the media heralding its triumphant return and the CW airing non-stop promos. And this is the best they could muster up? I wonder what the total viewers will end up being? 2.7 million? I wonder if it even managed a 1.0 in the demo.
And despite all this, I'm still convinced it'll be renewed.
