-Adults 18-49: NBC: 1.9 rating/7 share, CBS and Fox: 1.0/ 3 each, ABC: 0.8/ 3, CW: 0.6/ 2
--------------------
Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.
----------
-Friday’s Winners: Dateline (NBC), The Jay Leno Show (NBC)
-Friday’s Losers: The ALMA Awards (ABC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: NBC led the Friday troops with its combination of the two-hour season-premiere of Dateline (Viewers: #1, 7.38 million; A18-49: #1, 2.0/ 7 from 8-10 p.m.) and the fifth night (and Friday premiere) of The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: #1, 7.69 million; A18-49: #1, 2.1/ 7 at 10 p.m.). Once again, this is good news for NBC. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown for Dateline, which built as the show progressed.
Retention for The Jay Leno Show out of 9:30 p.m. portion of Dateline was solid at 83 percent in total viewers and 91 percent among adults 18-49. Although losses from Friday to Monday are more than 50 percent, NBC accomplished what it had hoped for The Jay Leno Show, and that was solid sampling. Now let’s wait and see what happens once the start of the new season begins today. Here is Leno’s first week track (with Monday through Thursday based on the Live Plus Same Day nationals).
Elsewhere, it was typical Friday of repeats for CBS with its combination of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #3, 4.63 million; A18-49: #2, 1.1/ 4), Medium (Viewers: #2, 4.53 million; A18-49: #2, 1.0/ 3) and Numbers (Viewers: #3, 4.29 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 3).
In season-finale news, Fox game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? finished second in the 8 p.m. hour in total viewers (5.02 million), and third among adults 18-49 (1.0/ 4). That led into a repeat of Glee at 2.76 million viewers (#3) and a 0.9/ 3 in the demo -- third in both categories at 9 p.m. Don’t forget that a half-hour version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? begins in first-run syndication today.
ABC aired its annual two-hour telecast of The ALMA Awards (Viewers: #4, 2.21 million; A18-49: #4t, 0.6/ 2 from 8-10 p.m.), which is never a competitive option, followed by veteran 20/20 at 5.45 million viewers (#2) and a 1.4/ 5 (#2) among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. While 20/20’s performance was nothing to boast about, it was a vast improvement over lead-in The ALMA Awards.
The CW capped off this final Friday of the summer season with a repeat of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 1.57 million; A18-49: #4t, 0.6/ 2) and a repeat of the pilot episode of The Beautiful Life (Viewers: #5, 1.08 million; A18-49: #4t, 0.5/ 2), which was dead on arrival on Wednesday.
Coming up next Friday: The one hour series-premiere of Fox sitcom Brothers; and the season-premieres of CBS’ Ghost Whisperer, Medium and Numbers; NBC’s Law & Order; Fox’s Dollhouse; and The CW’s relocated Smallville. Let the games begin!
Wow at Dateline. Over 9 million at 9:30 is outstanding for it. Jay Leno should do well on Fridays also. It might be its most competitive day and should be ahead of 20/20 and challenge Numbers for the lead.
With ABC, did anyone know the ALMA Awards were on? I don't think I saw one promotion for it. 20/20 did decently considering the lead in, but it's still lower than normal.
Over 9 million viewers for Dateline at 9pm??? Wow. Maybe NBC should consider axing Southland altogether and just stick with Dateline at 9pm. And those ratings Leno got are probably the beginning of its leveling off. I think Friday will be one of its highest rated nights, and it should be able to get those ratings on a weekly basis, especially on Fridays. I'd be interested in seeing the half-hour breakdowns when they become av available.
Can't wait to see how everything does next Friday. The CBS shows are all retaining good retention out of each other, yet they're still below 5 million viewers (I believe they were well above that this time last year). And will the sitcoms do any better than 5th Grader? Then there's of course powerhouse Law & Order, which should remain strong at 8pm.

I agree - the lineup is perfectly compatible. I think all 3 shows should premiere to at least 10 million viewers next Friday night. And, if Ghost Whisperer manages to have another breakout season, I think Medium will as well. This is season 6 for Medium, so it does have to prove itself this season if it wants to last any longer.
And Lost_Dom, I haven't heard from you on ages! Think you can go on pifnetworks.com? (I don't want to talk about it here).

Fridays are going to be interesting. I think CBS and NBC in particular have really good lineups.
As for NBC, I think Southland/Law and Order/Dateline/Jay Leno all appeal to an older skewing audience and are pretty much interchangable. So they all could share spots and pretty much keep a steady lineup. The thing with Dateline is as it gets overexposed, it starts to lose ratings so I wouldn't do a whole year of it, but sprinkle it in with the dramas, which seems to be where NBC is headed.

The Jay Leno Show should be able to do well on Fridays for a few weeks. Somehow I forgot it was on last night until 10:15pm.

Dateline has been airing so much all summer, and just because NBC called this one the season premiere, it had some of its best ratings. So, it's definitely a reliable performer. I think NBC should still try Southland, but if it isn't working, at least they can rest knowing they have Dateline in the wings.
But yeah, the whole lineup will prove to be a strong one for NBC. And yankees, I forgot Leno was on last night too! lol. I missed the monologue and the first skit last night. I guess it's something we all have to get used to still.
I am willing to bet Dateline will stay here and Southland will be put on hold.

It wouldn't be a bad plan. There's no reason to rush into Southland. Especially since Law and Order has 16 episodes.
That being said, I do wonder how much of Dateline's jump was Jay Leno pre-tune in. It's possible that maybe Jay caused some of the bump since his first half has been tracking higher than the second.

Ghost Whisperer & Medium seem to fit well out of each other. I wonder how they's perfom in originals through the season. We had the very same line-up of GW leading into Medium in Germany for many years and Medium mostly ended up losing a chunk of it's lead-in and the network bumped it to a later time slot this season.
I think Medium will hold about 80% of the GW lead-in.

There's a very good chance it was a pre-Leno tune in, since Leno could have easily gotten close to 10 million for its first 15 minutes. That's why I'm interested in seeing the breakdowns for last night's episode.
NBC might as well push Southland until midseason. But, would they take the chance of pushing it off until after the Olympics? It already has a small audience, and even that audience might lose interest by then. Still, Dateline would probably do much better.
