Regarding 'Lost', I loved it. But personally I don't think most viewers have the patience to wait 6 months to pick up where they left off, especially for a serial. Look what the writers strike hiatus did to many shows, and that was only 3 months. I think it is great to get those numbers because this indicates a large and loyal cult following that most shows never see.
Last year Lost had better numbers in its first hour against AI finale, and finished above 15m and 6.5 demo. Levels similar to season 4 premiere.
Viewers saw the time-travel nonsense and didn't like it, realized this was just a long con where the only thing happening is more "mysteries".
I happen to enjoy all the mysteries. My problems with Lost have mainly stemmed from the fixation on the characters' tragically repetitive flaws--that's a perfectly legit part of the show, they just overdid it a bit. They've fixed the problem now, with the flash forwards. I was very skeptical about those, but they're working out fine--we know the characters, give us INFORMATION.
If this was a show you liked, you KNOW you'd be saying it was natural for audience #'s to drop over time.
It's an unerring law of the universe--when you like a show, falling ratings mean nothing. When you hate a show, falling ratings mean everyone agrees with you.

That's a good point--Lost is not so much the smallest of the mainstream hits, as the biggest of the cult hits. By far.
Even with DVR numbers added Lost has "lost" over 2 million viewers in a year. I agree, next season the show will have trouble breaking 10 million in the same day data
Originally posted by lost_fan: Last season House tried something similar by airing its finale on may 29th after the weeps were over after a week's break between the final 2 episodes, here are the results
If the 5/15 episode of House had AI as lead-in, that comparison doesn't mean much.

By far? Heroes got very similar ratings this year (at least in the demo), against much tougher competition.

Whatever happened to "Everything is down, what do you expect, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the show?" Oh right, that only applies to shows you like that might actually get canceled.

A show from your sig
House's last year's finale 6.7 House's this year's finale 5.8 Net loss.................. -.9
Lost's last year's finale 5.8 Lost's this year's finale 4.9 Net loss................. -.9
And this is despite the fact that House got the post superbowl slot this year and this year's House finale had a much stronger leading with Bones which scored a mid 3 in the demo compared to On The Lot last year which got I think a 1.5 in the demo. So even though House got the post-superbowl slot and its finale leadin was more then twice as strong as last year and this year it aired during the sweeps it is down by the same amount as what you refer to is a "collossal failure called lost". Explain the reason behind house's dramatic drop in ratings. Did they introduce time travel too?

This feels like an apples/oranges comparison. LOST is in its 4th season. Heroes was in season 2. I'm sure a better number junkie than myself can find the data to compare Season 2 of Lost to Season 2 Heroes.

Here's a brief summary.
Lost S2 was huge.
Heroes S2 not so much.
Pisher, you are a gentleman and a scholar. I knew I could count on you.

House finale (and the three previous episodes) was aired outside of its normal time slot, on a new night and after the long strike hiatus, against very strong competition (2 1/2 Men, DWTS). House had great ratings all year long and shows that a series in its fourth year can stay strong even with the increase in DVR usage:
