Even more amazing when you realize that shows used to get canceled for not doing 30+ million... (pre-80's of course)

Well, that is SO not true.

PP is a spinoff of the second or first biggest scripted show depending on the week and is hovering around 7-9M less than the mothership...

The same applies for CSI: Miami and CSI: NY...

same applies now for CSI NY but Miami is still a good spinoff #s wise...

but when they launched??? I thought they both had much better #s their first seasons.

I would guess that both law and order and both csi launched with better numbers then PP.... just a guess though....

I still think DSM's numbers are disappointing given the promotional campaign it received (its numbers will decrease this week in finals, Private Practice ran 2 minutes long).

And it baffles the mind as to why you schedule a show in prime real estate like Big Shots out of Grey's Anatomy and don't push it in a big way to make people aware of it. They did the same thing with Six Degrees last year. It makes no sense! Especially in a DVR world where you can by and large avoid on-air promos and have to actively choose to record something.

Surprisingly, I agree with you take on the night. I think that Kitchen Nightmares will be the only thing to survive on FOX Wednesday and that is only because it is so cheap to produce that ratings really aren't a factor.

ABC:
Pushing Daisies took a drop about the size expected. I expect another drop next week on about 1million viewers. On the plus side, this show will probably look better when DVR numbers come out for this week because the 'buzz' caused nearly everyone to jump on the first week 'live'. Travis commented on cost. I'm thinking that costs will go down in subsequent episodes as they begin reusing the same brightly colored walls on future 'locations'.
Prospects for Pushing Daisies: niche show will have a loyal following once it levels off in th eratings. Might be something that could make the move to Friday without losing viewers and fit in where lower ratings are expected.

Private Practice: looks like it will be around for awhile. Expect back 9 pickup soon and for the show to see a second season.

Dirty Sexy Money won't last a season.

NBC:
Deal or No Deal is finally finding strength somewhere other than Monday. With a syndicated version coming and the suitcase holders branching out to bimbo status on other shows, DoND's days are numbered. Still, it should win this timeslot all season.

Bionic Woman: will probably finish out the season, but won't make season two.

Life: Won't make it through the season.

CBS:
Kid Nation has no reason beyond fear of writer's strike to still be on the air. This should have been a summer show.

Criminal Minds: Will get renewed for another season.

CSI:NY will get renewed for another season as well.

CBS shows may be old, but they are resilient.

FOX:
Back to You and 'Til Death will finish the year, but will not be renewed.

Kitchen Nightmares has nothing going for it except maybe that it is cheap.

CW:
America's Next Top Model bounced back nicely after viewers sampled Pushing Daisies. This show has already been renewed for next cycle so there isn't anything to predict beyond the fact that it will be airing for 2 more cycles next year as well. This show just might outlive a second network.

Gossip Girl is a waste of effort. The show needs something to cast a bigger net over the 'key viewers' that would be attracted to a teen soap. This show needs to add a 'buzz' castmember such as one of the stars of Highschool Musical or even an internet entity like Lonelygirl15. As it stands, this show is just another teen soap, ala One Tree Hill. Note for One Tree Hill: you better come back more mature that this if you want to survive.

Kid Nation has high demo numbers with 6 - 11 year olds and they don't want to upset them at this stage of their life.

Costs go up on a show, never down. Yes, they've got sets up, like any other show in production. They renew, everybody gets a salary bump. And will people really want to see those same garish sets, week after week? They are going to panic when they see the ratings drops, and they are going to start tinkering, and that means more money.

The real expense isn't sets--it's shots. The way the show is filmed, trying (and failing) to look like a really well made theatrical film, is extremely time-consuming, and nothing eats up money as quickly as needing a lot of time to shoot an episode of a television show that has to be ready in time for a set airdate.

There's no way they can do this on the cheap, there's no way they can avoid blowing a huge amount of money on every single episode--and it'll get worse, not better.

So the ratings have to get better--not worse.

Unneeded? I'm just desperate to know if there was a big drop off from the first half hour to the second.
I apologise for any problems I may of caused by asking the question more than once because I wasn't answered. Roll Eyes

LOL! You got to love Kid Nation and Gossip Girl and their respective strong holds in made up demos. I wonder if Dirty Sexy Money is the choice for newborns through toddlers ages 6 mo to 5? If so, someone should spin that.

OTH's writing is awful and character development is about as deep as a puddle. It's escapist teen fantasy at best. The story moves? They were in two years of high school for four seasons! Way to make the mid-twenties actors look even older than the characters they play...

You've probably seen another show.

I definitely think that ABC is gonna stick with Dirty Sexy Money.

Regarding DOND: Winning it's timeslot al season? Against American Idol???

And Kid Nation COULD have been a hit...if it included eliminations and wasn't 90% fake but actually unscripted.

You hit it right on. My kids are 6 and 8 and they enjoy the show. They would be very upset if the show is cancelled.

Personally it is very very boring to me. I read a magazine and pretend I am watching. When they look over at me I must quickly glance at the TV.

Someone was saying how much different PD is from any show that's on TV. Yeah it's very different, it's the procedural version of UB

? Let me try this again. Every episode moves the story along. Doesn't matter that THREE years of their lives lasted throughout four years. They had stories to tell and they told them well. They started out in their sophomore year. They finish high school at the end of season four. So get your facts straight first and most importantly.

If you think character development on OTH is horrible, then most other shows have zero character development. So I don't know what you're talking about. And it does have good writing. It's just not about shallow rich teenagers who always get what they want. Does it have its flaws? Yes, of course. What show doesn't?

Many people on this board are great, but also many just love bashing shows. If you don't care, then find something better to do than waste your mornings and afternoons here.

Is there really any reason that viewers can't jump into the series when it starts airing again this season? If the characters can flash forward 4 years or so, I don't see why viewers would be 'lost' by not seeing the earlier portion of the series.
