Glad to see the good results for MF and CT. If they can limit drops to 10% then ABC has something here. I doubt Eastwick will last but with a solid 9-10 hour ABC could move Brothers and Sisters to wed and use DH to launch Happy Town. Not holding out much hope for Hank and The Middle. The critics aren't being kind to Hank and that may limit sampling. But they can keep the timeslot warm until Lost returns. And they likely won't do worse than Pushing Daisies!

ABC needs some appointment TV in the 10pm hour.

Really. I was laughing non-stop. Oh wait, I was watching Criminal Minds.

Never mind.

NOTHING is worse than Pushing Daisies.

Then it better cancel Castle, which is just as bad as Pushing Daisies, and won't even score any sympathy Emmys.

When was the last time ABC had such high numbers for one of their comedies?

I'm happy for you. It's pretty serious to be laughing non-stop but at least you laughed. No such luck for me with CT

BTW Glee is truly a great funny show. Now that's a comedy show

ABC/Modern Family – 9 p.m. (series premiere)
Viewers: 12.74 million (#2), A18-49: 4.3/12 (#1)

ABC/Cougar Town – 9:30 p.m. (series premiere)
Viewers: 11.44 million (#2), A18-49: 4.3/11 (#1t)

Great viewer numbers, and VERY GOOD demo numbers. I thought both comedies were hilarious. I could not stop laughing during Modern Family. Cougar Town wasn't as good, but it was still pretty dang funny. For series/season premiere of comedies that I watched thus far I would rank it as this (top being the best):

Modern Family
The Big Bang Theory
Two and a Half Men
Cougar Town
Parks and Recreation
Accidentally on Purpose / Community
Gary Unmarried
Old Christine
How I Met Your Mother

ABC Comedy Wednesday Launches With Big A18-49 Tune-In

Utter, complete joy at those lofty Nielsens ABC enjoyed last night for its new ABC Comedy Wednesday line-up of 'Modern Family', 'Cougar Town' and 'Eastwick'.

That's right, assembled cast...'Cougar Town' opened last night at number one in A18-49s!

And broadcast had another roaring night last night, its third in a row. A18-49s and P2+s are positively flooding back to broadcast network television!

7-net Comparatives (Big 6 + UNIvision)
Third Night of New Season 2009 vs. 2008
--------------------------------------------
2009 1st Wednesday night vs. 2008 1st Wednesday night (last year):
HH up +19%, Viewers up +22%, A18-49 up +26%

Suddenly, with DTV issues sorted, everybody's watching broadcast network television again.

Just an observation.

MyNetworkTV vs. The CW: A Tale of Three Seasons

What's to criticize about MyNetworkTV, given that it has shown steady, continuous growth in households, A18-49s and P2+ viewers over the three seasons it has been on the air? In the past 2008-09 season, MyNetworkTV had its best 52-week season ever, adding +0.3 in households (up +43%), increasing +150,000 in A18-49s (up +28%), and jumping up by +470,000 P2+ viewers (+43%) from their averages from last season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
MyNetworkTV First Three Seasons
52-Week Seasons (Weeks 1-52)
Households A18-49 P2+ Viewers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2006-07: 0.6HH/1%, 0.3 A18-49 (420,000 young adults), 880,000 P2+ viewers
2007-08: 0.7HH/1%, 0.4 A18-49 (530,000 young adults), 1,100,000 P2+ viewers
2008-09: 1.0HH/2%, 0.5 A18-49 (680,000 young adults), 1,570,000 P2+ viewers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

By way of contrast, let us consider the three season story for The CW, where each season, it has experienced year-over-year decline.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The CW First Three Seasons
52-Week Seasons (Weeks 1-52)
Households A18-49 P2+ Viewers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2006-07: 1.8HH/3%, 1.1 A18-49 (1,470,000 young adults), 2,800,000 P2+ viewers
2007-08: 1.5HH/2%, 1.0 A18-49 (1,250,000 young adults), 2,370,000 P2+ viewers
2008-09: 1.1HH/2%, 0.7 A18-49 (890,000 young adults), 1,610,000 P2+ viewers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CW was formed as a merger of the former UPN and WB networks, and it took with it the pick of the affiliates, all the hit programs from those two networks, and all the combined executive and managerial talents.

MyNetworkTV, in comparison, was a quickly stitched together band of ragtag affiliates thrown overboard in the UPN-WB merger, who launched with all brand-new programming (those edgy, experimental English-language telenovellas) and have been a story of improving numbers ever since.

MyNetworkTV enjoyed their third consecutive season of growth, showing significant year-over-year double-digit growth in Households, A18-49s and P2+ viewers, while The CW experienced its third consecutive season of decline, showing marked deterioration in Households, A18-49s and P2+ viewers.

Wow! Fantastic job for Modern Family (which I previewed in August and it was hilarious!) and Cougar Town proving that sitcoms can in fact get over 10 million viewers these days that aren't 2 & 1/2 Men or anything after it.

As for Glee, what a fantastic episode las night, unlike the second (or is it third episode?) that aired last week, it was truly great. Who knew you could make an episode revolve around Single Ladies by Beyonce!?

About Jay Leno: NBC will be happy as long as the show makes a profit, ratings or not.

As has been often reported, a week of Leno costs less than one episode of a scripted hour-long drama or two episodes a of half-hour scripted situation comedy.

I wonder if local news at 10 P.M. ET/PT (9 CT/MT) on local Fox, CW and My Network TV stations have started to take a big bite out of ABC/CBS/NBC at that hour??

Given that people are supposed to be going to sleep earlier to wake up earlier for the increasingly longer commutes to/from work, I think that local 10 P.M. newscasts on Fox/CW/My Network TV stations have started to make an impact on ratings in many markets.

Could the CW and My Network TV merge in 2010??

(In all likelyhood, this would mean that "Smackdown" would return to the CW, since everything else on My Network TV, at least at present, is a rerun)

A lot of the CW's schedules now consists of reruns, too. Maybe they could both merge with Ion.

No, Dawn Ostroff should be worried about her network's existence with only one hit in the Vampire Diaries. I'm sure its numbers will continue to drop this week. If they haven't canned her by now, they won't. I'm very surprised that the network still exists considering that it's swimming in red ink. It can't survive for too much longer with numbers like this.

Actually the network also has these hits

Supernatural + Amazing DVD/Blu Ray sales
Smallville + Amazing DVD/Blu Ray sales
Gossip Girl
And iwill bet my arm VD will be great DVD/Blu ray sales aswell
