Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 2/09/09

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 12.48 million, ABC: 11.08, NBC: 8.53, Fox: 8.21, CW: 1.52

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 3.8 rating/9 share, ABC: 3.7/ 9, NBC: 3.1/ 8, Fox: 2.8/ 7, CW: 0.7/ 2

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Two and a Half Men (CBS), The Big Bang Theory (CBS), The Bachelor (ABC), CSI: Miami (CBS)

…and President Obama’s News Conference, which totaled a hefty (and approximate) 37.19 million viewers and an 11.4 rating/30 share among adults 18-49 for the four networks from 8-9 p.m.

-Disappointing:
Heroes (NBC), Medium (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an atypical night of programming in the Monday 8 p.m. hour, with President Obama’s Address (plus any after analyses) performing as follows:

President Obama Press Conference - Monday 8-9 p.m.:
ABC – Viewers: 11.49 million, A18-49: 3.1/ 8
CBS – Viewers: 10.03 million, A18-49: 3.0/ 8
NBC – Viewers: 9.75 million, A18-49: 3.1/ 8
Fox – Viewers: 5.92 million, A18-49: 2.2/ 6

Combined, that was a hefty 37.19 million viewers and an 11.4 rating/30 share among adults 18-49 in the 8 p.m. hour. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live news event are always approximate.

Capping off the 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of the CW’s Gossip Girl at 1.67 million viewers and a 0.8/ 2 among adults 18-49.

CBS moved into the 9-10 p.m. winner’s circle with its combination of Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 14.88 million; A18-49: #1, 4.7/11) and a 9:30 p.m. edition of The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #1, 13.10 million; A18-49: #1, 4.6/10). Retention for The Big Bang Theory out of Two and a Half Men of 88 percent in total viewers and 98 percent among adults 18-49 (yes…almost 100 percent!) was considerably better than former occupants Worst Week, Rules of Engagement and The New Adventures of Old Christine. Way to go, BBT!

Second in the 9 p.m. hour was the first half of another two-hour edition of ABC’s The Bachelor (Viewers: 11.68 million; A18-49: 4.2/10), which is enjoying its highest rated season in several years, followed by Fox’s 24. Rounding off the time period was NBC’s fading Heroes (Viewers: #4, 7.90 million; A18-49: #3, 3.6/ 8), Fox’s 24 (Viewers: #4, 10.50 million; A18-49: #4, 3.4/ 8), and a repeat of One Tree Hill on the CW (Viewers: #5, 1.37 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2).

CBS’ veteran CSI: Miami won the 10 p.m. hour, with 13.67 million viewers and a 3.9/10 among adults 18-49. Next was the second half of ABC’s The Bachelor (Viewers: 10.08 million; A18-49: 3.8/10), followed by NBC’s Medium at 7.93 million viewers and a 2.7/ 7 in the demo. Overall, The Bachelor averaged 10.88 million viewers and a 4.0/10 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m., Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The Bachelor (ABC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.43 million (#2), A18-49: 4.1/ 9 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 11.93 million (#2), A18-49: 4.3/10 (#2)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 10.23 million (#2), A18-49: 3.8/ 9 (#2)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.93 million (#2), A18-49: 3.8/10 (#2)

And there you have it…that is Monday.

Not yet, but with its demo strength, I think another season is all but guaranteed.

24 should be in the Winners section. Look how it built from the overrated Obama News Conference.

Obama - 5.92 million, A18-49: 2.2/ 6
24 - 10.50 million; A18-49: #4, 3.4/ 8

We're all about retention and gaining from lead ins right?

CBS actually held its own with ABC and NBC in the news coverage. That has to be the biggest surprise of the night.

Considering The Bachelor beat 24 among adults 18-49, it's not a winner. Once upon a time 24 used to average about a 5-rating in the demo.

Probably a function of viewer tune-in habits.

I agree. Plus, what else does NBC have?

MEDIUM is about where it was at the end of the 06-07 season when it was up against CSI NY and LOST.

Noting again that on about the same TA, MEDIUM did about a demo point less than HEROES, and against a modest base of 3.6 for HEROES. Just how many viewers do you suppose these long-supposed compatible shows share?

Hopefully anyone who sampled BBT for the first time last night will keep tuning in. It's really become one of my must-see shows, which I never would've guessed would happen.

Heroes drops from last week, even with a technically stronger lead-in. Next week it'll drop even more.

I don't think it applies when Fox gets trounced every time it airs these kind of specials.

Amazing retention numbers for BBT, but I actually expected better numbers from Men, so in the end it kinda evened out to what I expected. The show received a golden ticket by being put in that coveted spot, it'll be interesting to see how many of those viewers decide to tune in when the show returns to its usual time (and if that will also have a positive impact on it's ultra compatible leadout HIMYM) What does everyone think?

I feel like that's the best argument for keeping "Heroes" yet. Is 3.6/8 really that impressive, demo-wise? Doesn't "The Office" routinely get in the 4s (against much tougher competition)?

Obama's lengthy answers and the no-follow ups by the reporters made the press conference barely different in content from a campaign style appearance he had in Indiana earlier in the day.

It could spike a bit next week, but since its already hit 11 million in the 8pm slot I dont expect it to go much higher than that, especially with House now on at that time and DWTS returning soon

I would agree its definitely not a winner. But the 3.4 demo is not as disasterous as it first appears given it went from having House and his 5+ demo lead-in to Obama's weak lead in. On the other hand, it should be remembered, this show that once upon a time was self-starter. I think 24-fatigue is definitely taking hold. The show has played itself out. It was a great ride, but time for Jack Bauer to call it a day. Wink
