The interplay between the various ensemble casts of Buffy/Angel/Firefly more often than not outshone the central leads, and I see that happening here as well. I always found Willow/Xander/Anya/Giles more interesting than Buffy, Cordelia/Winifred/Lorne more interesting than Angel, and nearly all of the supporting Firefly characters more interesting than Nathan Fillion. This aspect doesn't "sink" Dollhouse to me either.

Actually, I think what you stated about Whedon's style IS his goal, not to be Master of All Genres. I think Whedon likes to send up various genres instead of mastering each one within their confines.

Still not sure the point of Cabin in the Woods is to scare all that much, but we shall see. Then again, Goddard is involved, and Cloverfield had some genuine thrills, so again...we shall see.

Spring tryout “Lie to Me” started strong but has faded since losing its post-”American Idol” perch. Still, there’s a good shot it will be back next season. A longer shot at returning: “Dollhouse,” which has posted predictably low ratings on Friday. But Fox executives are holding out a glimmer of hope for the show, noting its loyal core and its strong DVR numbers. The April 19 premiere of animated comedy “Sit Down, Shut Up” was less impressive, though it’s too soon to talk about that show’s future.

Glimmers notwithstanding, if even LTM isn't a sure thing, Dollhouse has no longterm survival prospects at all. Even if FOX gives it another chance. Which it has no earthly reason to do. But hey, that was true of T:SCC as well. Which you'll note isn't mentioned in the article at all.
Wink

Although not germane to our discussion on Dollhouse, for the record I have enjoyed T:SCC a lot more. I will be sad to see it go, if it does.

True, but of course that doesn't mean the show would have succeeded with her in the lead either.

That's kind of a stock observation, isn't it? Wink

The ensemble doesn't work. Didn't on Firefly either.

If by that you mean that British actress who plays boss lady is a lot hotter than Dushku, I agree. Wink

But you're weird. No offense. Smiler

I think his style has suffered a great deal, and that SOME of what we consider his style on Buffy is actually a blend of styles--but no question Dollhouse was designed to be the type of show that could do a different type of story every week. The problem with that type of show is that you have to be able to write all those different kinds of stories, and Whedon can't. Buffy really did focus on the genres Whedon knows best, and that's one reason why it's his only show that holds up--for three seasons, anyway. Fell to pieces after that.

You can't really send up a genre properly if you don't know it well enough to write it straight.

The point of Cabin in the Woods is for Joss Whedon to prove he can write the screenplay for a successful movie (no, Toy Story most decidedly does not count), and in that it shall fail miserably.

You shall see. Most shall not. Wink

The people of Portland were the top major metered market for 'Dollhouse', and were one of the top 5 major metered markets for 'Streisand: Live in Concert'.

The people of Portland are my kind of people.

It makes me wonder how 'Veronica Mars' did in Portland, OR. Does anybody have some old metered market numbers?

The city of Portland, Oregon...if only all households in America were like Portland?
