The truth is that Gellar was forced on him. And to a lesser extent, so was Alyson Hannigan (she wasn't in the original pilot). Boreanaz wasn't his pick either, though I've never read any stories about Whedon preferring another actor.

And those are the only three actors who first came to prominence on a Joss Whedon show who then went on to succeed in other roles. Dushku seemed to be the fourth after "Bring it On", but she never managed to build on that.

We should remember that at the time Whedon was developing Buffy, 20th Television was one of the hottest hippest TV studios in town, going from one success to another--they also gave Chris Carter a whole lot of pointers on The X-Files, helping him rewrite his pilot script--and you don't want to know who Carter wanted to play Mulder. Okay, I'll tell you anyway. Lance Guest.

My point being that Whedon actually owes 20th Century Fox a lot more than 20th Century Fox owes Joss Whedon. Actually, after Firefly and Dollhouse, they've blown so many millions on Whedon, I'm afraid they're going to send Stewie Griffin after him.

Shouldn't happen to a dog.

But Whedon's just a showrunner, so fire away.

It grew huge from Chris, and almost tied Prison Break in the demo. Thats big for a show on the CW fridays. Especially one that the CW claims skews too old. The show beat 90210 in viewers and was only .1 lower in the demo and its on Friday.

Marc do you have the W18-34 and just 18-34 numbers for Chris/The Game/Model since the CW only cares about that?

The demo was almost higher then Prison Break, which is a good victory for The CW. Just not good enough. Smiler

They'll make the same predictable comments about how it's entirely the network's failure, and nothing to do with Joss Whedon.

But here's a novel thought--maybe it's the other way around.

Think you're making Whedonesque out to be a little more draconian than it is. There are plenty of healthy criticism posts, directed to all Whedon shows. Sure, there are plenty of negative comments about Dollhouse there, but I also wonder how many negative comments about Buffy there would be if strictly limited to Season 1. It's all about perspective. I haven't enjoyed every episode of Dollhouse, but nor have I enjoyed every episode of Buffy/Angel/Firefly, and especially not in their respective Season 1's.

I never said there would be any Whedon fanbase without Buffy, nor do I think any percentage of the fanbase would choose Dollhouse over Buffy. Merely demonstrating that negative comments about a Whedon show, even on the Whedonesque boards, does not a Whedon show sink.

I like Dollhouse. I wish it was doing better. But, it isn't. The ratings suck.

While I'm holding out for a possible 13-episode renewal (every network has their niche hits they keep around for another season or two), I'm also realistic. The chances of that happening are slim-to-none.

So, I'm going to enjoy the rest of the run and then move on to whatever else Eliza does. I'll follow her anywhere Big Grin

Chuck - Renewed?

quote:
An NBC and WB insider is telling series.nu that Chuck is getting a third season of 13 episodes.

The NBC insider says that Chuck will get a third season of 13 episodes. But an other insider at WB is telling its not 100% sure, but its looking very good for the show. The WB insider confirms that if the show is getting renewed (what seems likely to happen) that the third season gets 13 episodes.

Schedule problem
The WB insider tells series.nu that NBC had a problem to get Chuck on the schedule, but because NBC really loves the show, they did everything to make it happen.

CW had no interest?
Last week we had an exclusive article about Chuck, that the show could move to The CW. Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment of The CW likes Chuck and had interest in the show if NBC would cancel it, but NBC has never offered the series to The CW.

I didn't click on the link about the Chuck renewal, but can it really be true if it was posted on a blog?

People just didnt like it. If they did, the demo wouldnt have fallen from a 2.0 to a 1.2.

Um .8 loss in the demo is hardly the worst. Shall we talk about "Lie To Me" who has lost nearly 50% of its demo???

C'mom people. Stop with the biases and lets just talk numbers and facts.

Fact is "Dollhouse" numbers suck. Fact is "Dollhouse" has hardly had as much exposure as any of Fox's other shows.

Going from 2.0 to a 1.2 demo is quite a big drop when you start out low. Sure Lie to Me dropped, but going after American Idol to before American had an affect on it. Dollhouse wont be back.

How long you think I'd last there? Wink

For the record, I think Buffy season one is exponentially better than Firefly, Dollhouse, and most of Angel--production values aren't everything, and Whedon's gifts don't seem to benefit from larger budgets. And it so happens I was watching Buffy from the very first episode, which I bet is more than most of his feeble fanfreaks can say. Big Grin

Isn't it a bit silly to talk about Firefly's Season 1, since it didn't even get to the end of Season 1?

BUT WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

Could it be that for this particular 'televisionary', lightning is only going to strike once?

No indeed--100% of them could be willing to trade the lives of their firstborn children to save it, and it would still go down bloody. Because a handful of online kool-aid drinkers don't tell the rest of us what to watch.

There are many MANY better shows out there--most of them on cable, to be sure. And Mr. Whedon is free to try his luck there--but the truth of the matter is, he's too damn square.

Rip Ms. Bea Arthur
I have loved watching you from day one on the golden girls. I mean the looks you gave the other girls on the show. To that dry sense of humor. You are a class act and beyond replaceable. I will cherish all the golden girls episodes. Once again think you for making me laugh. I mean still to this day I get a kick out of The golden girls. Go in peace Ms. Arthur and kow your fans will always be thankful to have had you brighten our screens. I know you will be making Estelle and everyone else laugh in heaven.

Much love a big Bea fan

I think that would be smart. The anemic viewership of Prison Break and Sarah Connor Chronicles have shown that even established shows that were pulling 6 or 7 million viewers prior only pull half that or worse on Fridays.

If not that, maybe with Obama interrupting primetime again, maybe they can shift a Bones original episode airing to Fridays and give Dollhouse a better lead in than it has had all season.

I didn't get the chance to see "The Golden Girls" all that much, but I did watch "Maude" reruns in local syndication in the mid-to-late 1980's and was instantly hooked. It was a fun show to watch and it's too bad they don't make them like they used to. Beatrice Arthur was certainly the force behind that show.

R.I.P. Bea, you will be missed.
