YES, it was a great episode. But I still don't get getting rid of the stronger players while you still have 2 tribes. Joel could still be voted out in a future TC (Fav's have Numbers) if you vote out the very weak Chet. If they keep this up, you may have a final of Chet, Kathleen and Cerie. When you are making claims like 'ABC is not happy with the show' people will make counter arguments highlighting its financial power a large section of which stems from its performance among the 18-49s. If you don't want to talk about then you should not be making that argument in the first place. Lost is clearly a more successful show because Lost probably generates more money then CM through DVD and merchandise sales and licensing alone without even counting the ad $ (in which case lost also outperforms CM by more then 2to1)

ABC went in expecting hoping for the same numbers as last year's spring, beyond that every additional viewer is just an added bonus. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that strike boasts any shows' ratings. No other drama that has original episodes has shown significant year to year gains during the strike months other shows like Law and Order, FNL and Medium are getting around the same as they were last year. Even American Idol which is a show that stands the most to gain out of strike hasn't shown any improvement in its number and is infact down year to year. In time where most shows have been down year to year ( some by significant amounts), Lost is a winner for holding its audience from the previous season and you can bet ABC is happy with that.
What odds are you giving? I think ABC was hoping it would go up in the ratings, given that it was going to be up against much weaker competition (no Criminal Minds)--hell, there's still not much first-run scripted programming on the air. They also must have been hoping that the new revelations, made possible by the fact that they agreed to set a limit on the number of remaining eps, would bring back people who were tired of getting strung along. This has been a stronger season than the last, so far--no Nikki and Pablo filler crap, for one thing. We're getting some real developments, and they've even explained why it's so hard to find the island, or get away from it. Well, partly. So no, I don't think ABC is particularly delighted that with all of these advantages, S4 is barely doing as well as S3. Given that production costs never stop going up, by doing about as well, they're actually doing a bit worse. They're happier with Lost than they are with Eli Stone. Give you that. |

It will be interesting to see if there is any Stike effect on Survivor once new episodes of CSI return on April 3rd. If Survivor all of a sudden is back to 14-14.5 million, we'll know. I don't see it ever bumping back to 15 million. It may reach 14 million here or there, but 13 million to me sounds most realistic.
Isn't every show on a slow downhill slide after it hits its peak? You could say same about CSI, GA, Lost and even AI. Most shows should be so lucky to last long enough to have a five year downhill slide. I do agree the 15 million viewer average is probably no longer in the cards for Survivor. However, it should rebound in the fall, as it usually does, not having to face AI or be interrupted by basketball. Also, if I am correct about how Nielsen computes season averages, then when CBS puts the final on Sundays, Survivor doesn't get the benefit of having one of its highest rated episodes count in the average. |

Silly TV-aholic, you can't just discuss Lost's TV ratings. Every other show ever aired can be discussed based on the regular ratings, but with Lost you have to include discussion of DVR viewing, online viewing (mostly illegal, because the legal online viewing isn't high enough to matter), nuts who watch the same episode 12 times in one week, the people standing in electronics stores watching on the big demo TVs, DVDs, VHSs, Laserdiscs, and special radio only presentations. |

For got to read the rest.... But Lost is only on 16 times a year. Criminal Minds is on 50 weeks a year, plus encore airings on some Saturdays and hole fillers. So CM will generate more money through the year than LOST can. post 10200
Yes but the encore airings of probably don't generate enough ad revenue to make a significant dent (I mean an original episode gets 121k so an encore would get even lower). We obviously cannot go into detail about this as we donot have the necessary numbers but from the number we do have Lost Season 3 dvd was the fastest selling TV DVD (other then planet earth) of last season and had done about $50million worth business in US alone by the end of its 7th week and is on track on making atleast another 15-20 by the time everything is said and done. This site has weekly dvd numbers http://www.the-numbers.com/ With Criminal Minds I doubt they even bother releasing a DVD (if they do it certainly doesn't do well enough as I have not seen it on the sales charts). |

Joel has been an almost total failure in every challenge, just like Chet. This week, Joel was every bit as loss causing as Chet in the obstacle course and he was a bigger cause for the loss in the Immunity Challenge than Chet. Both are dead wood. |

I'm sure there's some truth in what you say below. But in that case, how come Lost ends in season six (and really, allowing for the shorter seasons, more like season five)? Anybody want to bet Criminal Minds will be over in six seasons? Yes, Lost has an overarching story to tell, and CM doesn't. And everybody knows that if it had gone on making ABC huge money, they would never have agreed to let it go as soon as they did. And as I've said before, it's a GOOD thing the ratings went down. As long as they don't go too far down. And as long as the show doesn't drag its heels too much in terms of story developments and revelations, I don't think it'll fall far enough to make ABC end it early. Well last season it aired had similar competition then it has right now. I won't go into details as I posted the same thing last week as well but if you look at it the competition right now at Thu 9pm is higher then what Lost's competition was last year at Wed 10pm. ABC did not expect a sudden surge in ratings as it is not the kind of show that you can easily pick up back up if you stopped watching it for whatever reason (unless you catch up) Even this season it looks like new viewers tried to start watching the show but could not keep watching as they could not follow the plot and now it is back to the number of viewers it had last season which are the base audience(just like what happened in Season 2). |
