There was very little of note on this first Sunday in July, with CBS the most-watched network and NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49. But just over 7-million viewers for the Eye net and a 2.0 rating in the demo for NBC is nothing to boast about.

A two-hour edition of U.S. Olympic Trials devoted to swimming and track and field opened the evening for NBC with an average 5.75 million viewers and a 1.7 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 from 7-9 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

U.S. Olympic Trials (NBC)
7:00 p.m. Viewers: 4.98 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#2)
7:30 p.m. Viewers: 5.23 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 6 (#2)
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.13 million (#2), A18-49: 1.8/ 6 (#3)
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 6.65 million (#2), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#2)

That led into a two-hour edition of Dateline at a dominant 7.41 million viewers and 2.2/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. Sad, isn’t it, when the most-watched program in a two-hour block does not even crack 8-million viewers?

CBS opened with 60 Minutes at 8.11 million viewers (#1) and a 1.2/ 4 (#3) among adults 18-49 from 7-8 p.m. That led into the older-skewing Million Dollar Password (Viewers: #1, 7.53 million; A18-49: #4, 1.3/ 5 at 8 p.m.), which fits like a glove out of 60 Minutes, followed by repeats of Cold Case (Viewers: #2, 6.77 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #2, 5.74 million; A18-49: #2, 1.3/ 4) from 9-11 p.m.

An all encore night on ABC -- America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #2, 5.31 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7/ 6), a two-hour edition of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #3, 6.47 million; A18-49: #1, 2.2/ 7 from 8-10 p.m.) and Desperate Housewives (Viewers: #3, 3.57 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 4) left little to be desired. Ditto for Fox’s repeat combination of ‘Til Death (two episodes – Viewers: #4, avg. 2.47 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.0/ 3 from 7-8 p.m.). The Simpsons (Viewers: #4, 3.86 million; A18-49: #1, 1.9/ 6), King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 3.44 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5), Family Guy (Viewers: #4, 4.19 million; A18-49: #2, 2.1/ 6) and American Dad (Viewers: #4, 3.41 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5)

Last were repeats of the CW’s One Tree Hill (Viewers: 1.16 million; A18-49: 0.4/ 2), Everybody Hates Chris (Viewers: 1.50 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 2), canceled Aliens in America (Viewers: 1.34 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 2), The Game (Viewers: 1.01 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 1) and expired Girlfriends (Viewers: 900,000; A18-49: 0.3/ 1). As a reminder, Everybody Hates Chris and The Game will relocate to the Friday 8 p.m. hour next season, which is expected to result in minimal returns.

Kind of sad how each CW comedy just loses viewers as Hut levels increase.

A possible explanation could be that here in NYC there was a Mets game that suffered a rain delay which resulted in the game going into primetime and many viewers were watching the earlier shows waiting for it to come back on.

FOX Holds Narrow Lead Over NBC in A18-49 After 4 Days of 2008 July Sweep; CBS 3rd, ABC 4th, and CW Back in 5th

After four nights of the July Sweep, FOX holds onto a narrow first place lead in A18-49 with a 1.5 A18-49 average. NBC is close behind in second, CBS third and ABC just one basis point behind in fourth. The CW has fallen back from fourth to fifth courtesy of their low Sunday night numbers.


After four nights, CBS holds on to its customary lead in viewership, with NBC close behind in second.

This years numbers are based on FAST national numbers, whereas last years numbers are based upon final Nielsen numbers. Also, this year's Sweep includes the low-HUT Fourth of July whereas last year's Sweep started on July 5th and did not include the Fourth of July.

I don't expect those numbers to hold in finals. Like you said, sports preemtions are affecting the data. Likely, the earlier shows (OTH/EHC/AIA) have been artificially inflated by viewers watching baseball and the actual numbers for those shows will be much lower in finals.

Million Dollar Password should still be brought back next summer to lead out of 60 Minutes. If it was in the fall it would be crushed. Summer is where it belongs.

I agree. MDP is slowly dropping in the ratings. Plus a 1.3 demo show with limited competition has no place in a fall schedule. I still think it will do the exact same numbers Power of 10 did when it came back. CBS has a good summer option and should just stick to that.

Just about everything in the summer is skewing old. Only Hell's Kitchen, AGT, SYTYCD, Wipeout and 2.5 Men Repeats are the only shows consistantly getting a 3.0+ in the demo.

Baby Boomers Spends More Than Those Under 40, Has Less Brand Loyalty

Baby Boomers in their 40s and 50s not only are at the peak of their earning potential but also are making the majority of buying decisions for themselves, small children and their elderly parents, according to a recent branding survey conducted by TV Land and consumer researcher OTX.

The findings were detailed during a press conference Monday at the National Press Club by TV Land president Larry W. Jones. He was joined by Kim Alexis (pictured), host of TV Land's original reality series She's Got The Look and Beverly Johnson, a judge on the same series.

Not only are 40- and 50 year-olds spending more on themselves per month than Millennials and Gen Xers but, more interestingly, they are spending twice as much as their younger cohorts on others in their lives. With so many people to shop for, Boomers are “making several multi-generational purchase decisions at once and—contrary to common assumptions—they are far less brand loyal than Millennials and Gen Xers,” according to the survey.

TV Land's "Generation BUY: A Close Look at the Boomer Consumer" study, fielded by OTX, includes input from almost 4,000 adults ages 18-65 nationwide. Commissioned by TV Land, the study provides information on the purchase decisions and brand loyalty of Adults 40-59.

“While we have always known that it's a mistake to underestimate the power of people in their 40s and 50s, ‘Generation BUY’ once again shows us that Boomers are a major source of consumerism in this country,” Jones said. “Knowing that this generation has so many dependants, the means to buy the products that appeal to them and the willingness to try new brands is powerful information to share with our marketing and advertising partners.”

A show doesn't need a 3 demo to skew young. For instance, a show could have 3 million viewers but a 1.7 or 1.8 demo. That would be a younger skewing show. Even stuff in the 4 to 5 million viewer territory with around a 2 to 2.5 demo are younger skewing. If 60 Minutes or some of CBS's crime shows had 5 million or less watching, they would probably be pulling low 1s in the demo as experienced last Sunday. Other older skewing shows like Law and Order and DOND have the same issues. Just because a show has a 3.0+ in the demo, doesn't mean the overall skew is young or old.

Well, the term "SKEW" means almost nothing in terms of ratings. Its about the hard numbers, not the percentages within your show.

And as the story above pints out, being "older" may be a good thing.

You're wrong here. This is entirely how the WB and UPN and now the CW are surviving. Proving that a program is all younger viewers only helps its cause. Yes Criminal Minds may bring in slightly higher amounts of younger viewers but it has oodles and oodles of older viewers watching too (not necessarily a bad thing as you mention) but Gossip Girl for instance, is about 85% younger viewers if not more than that. Advertisers see that as a cheaper way to reach quite a few younger people. If 2.7 of the 3 million are young folks its really doing the same amount of work as if 2.7 million of the 13 million are younger viewers. Just to note, in a show like Gossip Girls case, the skew would be something like 12 to 34 year olds. If we wanted an example of something 18-49 based, then you could use something like American Dad, which oftens doesn't hit 7 million viewers but usually has over a 3 in the demo.
