Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 10/29/08

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 14.49 million, CBS: 11.86, NBC: 7.41, ABC: 6.82, CW: 2.90

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 4.7 rating/12 share, CBS: 3.0/ 8, ABC: 2.4/ 6, NBC: 2.3/ 6, CW: 1.5/ 4

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
The World Series, Game 5: Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay (Fox), Criminal Minds (CBS), CSI: NY (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers:
Pushing Daisies (ABC), Private Practice (ABC), Stylista (CW), Dirty Sexy Money (ABC), Lipstick Jungle (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the fifth (and final) game of The World Series (Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay), Fox dominated Wednesday with an advantage over second-place CBS of 2.63 million viewers and 1.7 rating points among adults 18-49. ABC and NBC tied for the No. 3 and 4 spots, with the CW fifth.

Three networks -- CBS, NBC and Fox -- opened the evening with a half-hour paid political message from Presidential candidate Barack Obama, which fared as follows in the overnights:

8:00 p.m. - Barack Obama Political Message
NBC – Viewers: 9.85 million (#1), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#1)
CBS – Viewers: 8.65 million (#2), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#3)
Fox – Viewers: 7.92 million (#3), A18-49: 2.8/ 8 (#2)

In total, that came to an impressive 26.42 million viewers and an 8.1 rating/22 share among adults 18-49.

Although ABC was hoping facing Barack Obama on three networks would benefit Pushing Daisies, the struggling drama could only muster 6.64 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49, which was fourth in both categories. One year earlier, Pushing Daisies averaged 8.57 million viewers and a 2.7/ 8 in the demo. Fifth overall in the 8 p.m. hour was America’s Next Top Model on the CW, with a below-average 3.93 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49.

Game 5 of The World Series (Philadelphia vs. Tampa Bay) followed Barack Obama on Fox, delivering an estimated 16.68 million viewers and a 5.4/14 among adults 18-49from 8:30-10 p.m. (results for Fox were not available in the 10 p.m. hour). Naturally, this was a solid increase from the network’s year-ago combination of ‘Til Death and Kitchen Nightmares. But the overall series still came in below the year-ago match-up between Boston and Colorado. Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

Airing on CBS at 8:30 p.m. was The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #2, 7.64 million; A18-49: #3t, 2.2/ 6), which replaced the regularly scheduled Gary Unmarried. NBC went with a 90-minute edition of Deal or No Deal, which averaged an unimpressive 8.27 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 8:30-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Deal or No Deal (NBC)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.87 million (#3), A18-49: 1.7/ 5 (#5)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 8.15 million (#3), A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#4)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.79 million (#3), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#4)

Despite facing The World Series, CBS’ Criminal Minds held up well, with a second-place finish in both total viewers (13.80 million) and adults 18-49 (3.4/ 8) from 9-10 p.m. But Private Practice on ABC could not compete with a series-low 7.73 million viewers (#4) and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3). One Year earlier, Private Practice averaged 11.34 million viewers and a 3.8/10 in the demo. In week two news, CW reality/competition Stylista dipped to 1.87 million viewers and a 0.9/ 2 among adults 18-49. Comparably, retention out of the second half of America’s Next Top Model (Viewers: 4.31 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 6) was just 43 percent in total viewers and 39 percent among adults 18-49. I can’t imagine the retention being much better among key females.

Second behind baseball in the 10 p.m. hour was CBS’ CSI: NY, at a solid 13.63 million viewers and a 3.4/ 9 among adults 18-49. Next was ABC’s struggling Dirty Sexy Money (Viewers: 6.08 million; A18-49: 2.0/ 5), followed by NBC’s Friday-bound Lipstick Jungle (Viewers: 4.90 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 5). If Lipstick Jungle cannot compete on Wednesday, there is no reason to believe it will do any better on the lower HUT-level Friday. Sorry Brooke.

It looks like the only thing Ned can't bring back to life is Pushing Daisies' ratings

Yeesh! Aside from Pushing Daisies, it looks like almost everything was down last night. CM and CSI:NY went tumbling. PP saw drops but at least still grew from lead in (and had one of its better episodes), Top Model was clearly hurt by Barack, DSM finished behind PD (blame Barack and baseball for that one), and Stylista is officially a bomb.

One should note the growth for DOND throughout its half hours though. Still, topping out at a 2.8 isn't all that impressive.

Although Private Practice dipped, Dirty Sexy Money held steady this week and might end up slightly higher than last week. A full season renewal is imminent. (I guy can dream can't he?)

Here's hoping they give this show a shot on Sundays!

PUSHING DAISIES can thank Obama for one last hurrah above the 6 million viewer mark.

And speaking of 6 Million...will next week be the week DIRTY SEXY MONEY drops below that point on its way to cancellation?

Who is running ABC? They chose not to take the money from Obama to instead waste on PD? I'd say monkeys were running the network but they have more sense.

This entire Wednesday line up should be canceled.

Not sure if this is going to have a huge impact, but Stylista was pre-empted by a Lakers game in Los Angeles. So it was probably lower than usual.

ABC Wednesdays are still struggling. PP is way down this week. PD and DSM got a slight bump upwards in the ratings, but they are still way too low. Neither is coming back after December.

Over at NBC, DOND is really struggling. Viewership was just decent, demos were low. However, there was a huge jump at 9:30. LJ is dead. It couldn't even get half of the viewership out of DOND. It's viewership and demos are way too low. It had a slight uptick in the numbers but only because of an increased lead in. It's going to be DOA when it moves to Fridays.

Stylista is also dead for CW. The only thing going for it is the fact that it is cheap to produce. It won't be coming back for a second season.

The Obama infomercial did very well. It produced the highest numbers for NBC, which is a reflection of the desirability of the shows NBC is putting on schedule.

FOX got a huge boost from baseball.

CM is lower than normal but CSI NY pretty much held up.

I'd like to see if replace repeats of the Sunday dramas or air Tuesdays at 10 come late March behind Dancing results. Cupid can fill the Monday 10pm slot and Castle could fill whatever slot DSM doesn't this midseason. Lost, Life on Mars, and the Unusuals could air Wednesdays with UB, GA, and PP all airing Thursdays. Fridays stay the same and comedies get to stare Idol in the face on Tuesdays into Primetime from Jan-Mar.

The reason DOND got a big boost in the last half hour was because someone won $ 1 million. It should have been much higher.

ANTM suffered, because lots of African Americans watched Obama instead of ANTM, which I believe skews to that demographic group.

I still believe Private Practice would do well behind a show with actual viewers, like say Greys Anatomy.

OK, I guess I'll be the first to ask (today) for the PD half hours...did it drop like a stone at 8:30, or retain the viewers that it did have?

I agree. But it has to be done sooner rather than later.
