Survivor did nothing to Idol. If anything, Idol hurt Survivor and in the process hurt the entire CBS Thursday.
Originally posted by pisher: The Office has a whole cast of fascinating characters, and no one writer/producer is taking all the credit for it. It's a true collaborative effort, and as outlandish as it can be at times, it's about situations we all experience in daily life, albeit a bit less contrived, and not as well written (and no documentary film crew hanging around, thankfully--hopefully).
It's the part you said about it being outlandish that's really important. There are so many jokes on the show, only half of which are actually funny. But it's not enough to be funny. If The Class taught us anything, it's that a good joke can only be enjoyed when it's well placed in the setting, dialogue, etc. The Office is similar. You can laugh all you want, but that's all the show has going for it.

This round of Survivor has really taken a downhill slide compared to even the recent China eps. What the heck happened?? Virtually no competition, and it can't even maintain it's pre-strike numbers? It's already lost a full 1.0 in the demo since the premiere. That's just BAD.
no competition? about half the epis were against Idol...and don't forget about DST.
also, csi was in reruns so no pre-tune in.

Regardless of all that, the franchise is really starting to show its age. It used to handle Idol pretty easily but now we're below a 4.0 demo. Time to cut back to once a year unless it gets a night change. At this rate, Ugly Betty will be competing in the demo in the coming weeks.

Well I'll give you that but those were without Greys airing afterwards. I think it can get mid-3s with Greys for sure. The problem is that I've seen no promotion for Betty's return, which does scare me some.
i've seen UB promos along with GA (and LOST in some too)

Um from what you're showing here, its had either a 3.4 or 3.5 or better all but two times. To me, that's mid-3s. Maybe you're looking at something else?

Hmm perhaps that has to do more with the fact that I haven't been watching much ABC lately aside from Eli Stone and Boston Legal, because imo, nothing else on ABC is worth watching right now. Of course, Housewives are back this Sunday and eventually the Thursday lineup will be back.

Actually the entire 8ph hour on Thur nights is down. In addition to UB and Survivor, 5th grader and earl have all taken larger than average tumbles. The 9pm hour has retained viewers much better.
However, Survivor is down much more percentage-wise than UB. And it really hasn't had a lot of competition. I know it aired against Idol some times but look at last week's numbers. 4.0 with 12.8 mil? Hardly Survivor's best results.

YES! The Office up a tick in the finals. The means it bested the last original ep before the strike, to become the second highest ep this season. Only .2 behind the record.
This should put to rest the ridiculous reasoning behind "well, cold case, csi:ny, criminal minds, and ncis all came back weaker because of the months-long strike"... so what??
A few strong shows have seen larger numbers post-strike while older shows continue to age. This should surprise no one.
