Prime-Time Ratings:
Friday 4/11/08

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.83 million, ABC: 5.58, NBC: 5.06, Fox: 5.03, CW: 4.40

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 2.3 rating/7 share, ABC: 1.6/ 5, NBC: 1.5/ 5, CW: 1.4/ 4, Fox: 1.2/ 4

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
Ghost Whisperer (CBS), The Price is Right (CBS), Numb3rs (CBS)

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Amnesia (NBC), Duel (ABC), Miss USA 2008 (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS scored another modest Friday victory, with a first-place finish in every half-hour care of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: 8.74 million; A18-49: 2.5 rating/9 share), The Price is Right (Viewers: 8.15 million; A18-49: 2.1/ 7) and Numb3rs (Viewers: 9.59 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 7). Each show has to be considered a “winner” on this typical low HUT level Friday. Next week, vampire drama Moonlight returns with an encore performance at 9 p.m.

Second overall was ABC with its combination of a repeat of veteran America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #2, 5.68 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5), uneventful game show Duel (Viewers: #5, 3.99 million; A18-49: #4t, 1.2/ 4), and newsmagazine 20/20 (Viewers: #2, 7.07 million; A18-49: #2, 2.2/ 7). Of note for 20/20 was growth out of Duel of a hefty 3.08 million viewers and 83 percent among adults 18-49. As for Duel, all together now…tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking!

Next up was NBC as a result of another flop game show, Amnesia (Viewers: #5, 4.06 million; A18-49: #5, 1.0/ 4) and the annual Miss USA Pageant, which dipped to a mere 5.56 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, this could very well be the lowest-rated performance for Miss USA in the history of the pageant. But how do you like hosts Donny and Marie? They are everywhere (and Marie’s upcoming fall 2009 syndicated talker from Program Partners is a show to keep a positive eye on).

Fox finished fourth in total viewers, but fifth among adults 18-49 with its combination of a repeat of Bones (Viewers: #3, 4.77 million; A18-89: #3t, 1.3/ 4) and Canterbury’s Law (Viewers: #2, 5.29 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4), which is not expected to move forward because of the older skew. Bones debuts in its new Monday 8 p.m. time period tonight.

Capping off the evening was the CW’s exiting Friday Night Smackdown!, with 4.40 million viewers (#5) and a fourth-place 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49. The CW’s loss will, no doubt, be new home MyNetworkTV’s gain.

Yeesh! CBS is on top with 8.83 million viewers and ABC, NBC and FOX are stuck between the 5.0 to 6.0 million mark. The CW still consistent with 4.40 million viewers!

Disappointing results for everyone, including for CBS.
I guess that's the end for CL

Now, it looks like the end to Canterbury's Law. I actually watched last nights episode and I didnt think it was that bad.

CBS had a good night.

Horrible numbers for the Miss USA pagent.

ABC, just get rid of Duel now. You would actually be smarter putting repeats of DH or GA there. However, I believe that spot is for WMC.

Wanna see the true health of your favorite show? Check out this chart...

Keep in mind, these are numbers from fall, so it's likely different by now, but you can piece together a pretty good picture.

http://www.tvweek.com/pdf/2007%20Pricing%20chart.pdf

This is yet another piece of the puzzle to try and win the "total viewership" crowd over, and hopefully help them realize it's not all it's cracked up to be (by Moonves).

Yeah, see how valuable those 11 mil viewers that are watching NCIS are compared to the 6 mil that are watching NBC's 30 Rock, and tell me that the demo is less significant.

Notice also how much ABC can charge for DWTS (which I'm continually told is "one of the biggest hits on tv"), and how much NBC can charge for The Office (which i'm continually told will "never be a mainstream hit").

My point: who gives a flip??

If The Office is a bigger hit in the advertising world, than it's a bigger hit in the network's world.

And believe me, when I consider what is a hit, I consider the number of bankable dollars, not simply the number of tv's tuned into a certain channel.

Boy, wouldn't it be nice if it were that easy? We could all be marketing geniuses if we just knew that 5 was a bigger number than 3! :-)

If it gives fans of Cold Case a warm feeling inside to know that more people alive in the world watch their show than Ugly Betty, goody. But the fact of the matter is that it's not as valuable a show. And this is a business, remember, not a fan club.

Had Canterbury's Law skewed younger, it might have a chance. But as it stands, it's a goner.

I think Marie has a shot of success in syndicated talk. Look how far she got on Dancing With the Stars.

So, how much does DwtS cost per half hour to make vs. The Office? If you are really going to look at bankable dollars, then you can't just talk about ad rates.

Was that merit based or based upon her age/condition. I don't think that voter sympathy on a dance show will translate to people being willing to sit through a talkshow with Marie Osmond.

Well, OF COURSE not. I'm not saying this chart is a tell-all either. If it was, we could still all be marketing geniuses if we could read that $100,000 is more than $80,000.

*sigh*

Do you really want me to delve into tiny details?

Another factor we have to look at is how any show impacts the feel of the networks nightly or weekly lineup. Is a show getting buzz or not? Even if a show (FNL) doesn't make the big bucks, does it draw attention to the net's press prescense (thus increasing possible rates across the board?) If so, how much is that increased attention worth? Does scheduling a reality show bring down the night's image, thus hurting ad values across not one, but three hours? If no, does it increase it? If yes, how damaging is it? ETC, ETC, ETC.

We could all go on for hours (that's why this forum is here :-)

But the point still remains that this chart is a fairly good guage (at least when comparing scripted vs scripted or unscripted vs unscripted, if you insist) when comparing how valuable (and in MY book at least, how big of a hit) a show really is.

Unless it pulls around 8.5 to 9 million next week, I'd say its dead. Fox has a huge slate of new dramas and very few timeslots to fill. New Amsterdam still has a shot at renewal, but its overall unlikely. And last night's results were poor overall.
