-Yesterday’s Winners: NCIS R (CBS), America’s Got Talent (NBC), The Mentalist R (CBS), 48 Hours (CBS)
-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats): The Superstars (ABC), Better Off Ted (ABC), Hitched or Ditched (CW), Primetime: Family Secrets (ABC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Leadership was mixed on this last Tuesday in June, with CBS the most-watched network and NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49. CBS opened the evening with a repeat of underrated NCIS (Viewers: #1, 10.66 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0 rating/7 share), followed by a repeat of The Mentalist (Viewers: #2, 10.36 million; A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 6) and an original edition of 48 Hours themed “Michael Jackson: Picking up the Pieces” (Viewers: #1, 8.14 million; A18-49: #1, 2./0/ 6 at 10 p.m.). Needless to say, the flood of ongoing programming focused on the King of Pop continues.
NBC aired a repeat of America’s Got Talent (Viewers: #2, 8.20 million; A18-49: #1, 2.3/ 8), an original installment of America’s Got Talent (Viewers: #1, 12.91 million; A18-49: #1, 3.7/11 -- top-rated show of the evening), and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 7.32 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/ 6). In a sea of reality/competitions, America’s Got Talent is the standout.
Finishing in the distant No. 3 spot was ABC (tied with Fox among adults 18-49), care of week two of The Superstars (Viewers: 4.01 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 4), which does not live up to its title, an original installment of sitcom Better Off Ted (Viewers: #4, 1.78 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 2 at 9:30 p.m.), and summer newsmagazine Primetime: Family Secrets (Viewers: #3, 3.53 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3). Given the abysmal performance for Better Off Ted (which could be an historical low in the Tuesday 9:30 p.m. half-hour for ABC), the network should rethink its decision to bring it back in midseason. As for failing The Superstars, here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Superstars (ABC) 8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.15 million (#3), A18-49: 1.2/ 4 (#3) 8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.29 million (#3), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#3) 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 3.58 million (#3), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#3)
Elsewhere, Fox aired a repeat of Reese Witherspoon theatrical Legally Blonde (Viewers: #4, 2.89 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.0/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.). And the CW closed the evening with its combination of a repeat of 90210 (Viewers: #5, 780,000; A18-49: #5, 0.3/ 1), which did not exactly set the water-cooler on fire in season one, and the season (or series) finale of inane CW reality/competition Hitched or Ditched (Viewers: #5, 1.03 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1). Based on the numbers, this should be the last we will be seeing of Hitched or Ditched.
ABC had a terrible night. Superstars is dead. And I'm with you on trying to figure out why BOT was brought back. They could try to stick it in between two comedies in a block, but I don't see how it doesn't just lose viewers, taking down the overall numbers. Perhaps it's just best to get the leads transferred over to another comedy. I do think Portia De Rossi would make a nice addition to another show. And what's up with Primetime? It should be doing much better than this. I wonder if we are getting into newsmagazine overload with all these newsmagazine specials.

Primetime is being hurt by its terrible lead in. ABC should shrink The Superstars down to an hour, throw in a repeat of Wipeout or something and lead into Primetime. That way it should be able to pull at least a 1.2-1.4 demo. Better off Ted should just be cancelled. Originals of Surviving Suburbia are doing better on Fridays, and The Goode Family is almost beating it!

Poor ABC. They're getting crushed by repeats now. The Superstars did worse than last week. Clearly this isn't working. I'm hoping that ABC will just end it now, or ship it off to Saturday nights. It's doing terribly, and Better Off Ted is doing even worse. Bring in Crash Course early and fix this up.
ABC should just let go of Better Off Ted now. A show like this should be doing better in the summer. If it can't even crack 2 million now I'm afraid to see what it'll do in the regular season. I think ABC will end up picking up Romantically Challenged - they still have rights to pick it up until the end of December. They'll probably pick it up and replace Better Off Ted with it, if I had to guess. At least they should.
NBC should have just done a whole night of America's Got Talent. I can't believe how well the repeat at 8pm did. And over 12 million at 9pm is fantastic for NBC in the summer. They should be happy they at least have one summer hit. And CBS also did very well with repeats and 48 Hours last night. Good to see The Mentalist up this week - it's only got a week to go in this slot. And the Michael Jackson coverage continues. I'll give CBS props, though. They put together a very good special last night.

That's exactly what they should do. I'd like to see them air the remaining episodes of Surviving Suburbia on Tuesdays at 9:30 and put Better Off Ted on Fridays, though.
Definately. It's one of their strongest assets. If I was NBC, I'd promote very aggressively their fall slate with AGT to make sure it gets maxium visibility. Working in NBC's favor is that fact that their schedule is a lot more appealing than what they had last year (not to mention more cohesive than last year which I think they just threw shows on wherever they had a space). The trick is to make sure that those viewers doesn't turn off as soon as AGT ends.

America's Got Talent is their highest rated show, all year round. No other show on NBC can pull in 12 million viewers on a regular basis. NBC should definitely use that to their favor. I really think they have a real chance to get their ratings up this season. They could have a real hit show in Parenthood, the best show I've seen NBC pickup in years. Their schedule is even and pretty good. They just need to carry it out the right way, and promoting it during a show like AGT could help.

I don't understand why NBC didnt use America's Got Talent as a lead in for The Listener. NBC did it with The Philanthropist, and it didnt do all too bad.

That's a good question. I don't know why they didn't do that either. I think The Listener would have held on to the audience even better than The Philanthropist if the ratings for a L&O: SVU repeat after AGT is any indication.

'Better Off Ted' dearly misses the lead-in of 'Scrubs', which gave it a very sympatico lead-in (very high in younger male demos) that appreciated its uproariously funny comedic qualities.
'The Superstars' is no 'Scrubs', and in fact, it is even a rather pale shadow of its 'ABC Wide World of Sports' ancestry.
ABC might be better off saving the remaining episodes of 'Better Off Ted' and adding them to the second season order, which is due to debut in midseason out of 'Scrubs'. By my calculation, that would give ABC programmers 17 episodes of 'Better Off Ted' to go with what I believe is 18 fresh episodes of 'Scrubs' currently in production.
When 'Better Off Ted' is back in behind 'Scrubs', ABC will be better off along with Ted.

They should still try it. I don't see why they don't, either. The Listener is dying on Thursdays, especially with a bunch of low rated comedies as its lead-in. It probably wouldn't do any worse than SVU repeats.
Less than two days remain to submit your predictions in the 2009 July Sweep Prediction Game.
This year, the July Sweep runs from Thursday July 2nd to Wednesday July 29th, and we have the second annual July Sweep Prediction Game. Everyone who is a registered member of pifeedback.com is eligible to play the game. All are welcome.
Who will reign supreme in July? Just look at how tightly bunched the six networks are in Week 40 (Univision attracted 3.250 million viewers and 1.3 in A18-49s), per the cogent analysis of Mr. Marc Berman released earlier this morning:

National Ratings in Prime-Time: Week of June 22, 2009
Three networks shared low-rated leadership on the sleepy week of June 22, with CBS first in households and total viewers; NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54; and Fox tops in the adult 18-34 demo. CBS had now been the most-watched network in four of the last five weeks. ... Elsewhere, ABC finished third in four of the five surveyed categories (tied with CBS in adults 18-49 and fourth among adults 25-54), while MyNetworkTV outdelivered last-place The CW for the fifth consecutive week. Excluding gains for MyNetworkTV (which remains on the plus side without Friday Night Smackdown! in the year-ago mix), year-to-year losses was the common observation. The biggest loser: The CW, with erosion of as much as 50 percent among adults 18-49 and what could very well be its lowest rated week ever.
Here are the final national ratings for the week of June 22, 2009 (with percent change versus the comparable year-ago week in parentheses):
Good luck to all contestants who enter. Good luck to the networks and their web of affiliates across the country who are in the fight of their life against all the entertainment alternatives open to viewers in the summertime.
Thank you,
Dumont Sweepmaster May 2008 dumont
The deadline for final entries will be 8:00 AM on Friday July 3rd just before the very first overnight metered market reports are being relayed across the country.
I believe Scrubs was only renewed for 13 dumont, meaning that BOT would then have 4 more episodes than it. Still, I think pulling it is really their only option right now.

Agreed. I really think cancelling it and forgetting they ever picked upa 2nd season is their only option now. Like I said, the Alyssa Milano pilot "Romantically Challenged" could do much better than BOT.
