I'm sorry, but if you're going to compare assets between ABC and Fox, ABC comes well ahead -- the only reason ABC is in 3rd place is poor programming decisions, not for lack of solid building blocks.
Let's compare, shall we:
ABC has: Dancing with the Stars, and DWTS: Results Counter--Fox has: American Idol and AI:results. Fox is stronger here, but AI is on the way down and DWTS is still increasing. Advantage (slightly): Fox.
ABC has: Grey's Anatomy Counter--Fox has: House. Both very strong, both overall and in the demo, but Grey's does it year round whereas House is somewhat inflated during AI months. Plus, Grey's has by far the stronger buzz. Advantage: ABC
ABC has: Desperate Housewives. Counter--Fox has Family Guy/Simpsons. While Family Guy/Simpsons are strong in 18-34, DH kicks their hiney head-to-head, despite its own recent ratings downturn. Advantage: ABC
ABC has: LOST Counter--Fox has 24. Both are cool, hip, serialized dramas, and both are having weak years in overall viewers, but still very strong in the 18-49 demo. Advantage: push
ABC has: Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Counter--Fox has 5th Grader. No comparison. 5th grader has been on a downturn since AI was taken away as a lead-in, whereas EM:HE gets solid numbers for both originals and reruns (one of the few ABC shows that does, and one of the very few reality shows that repeats well (or at all). Advantage: ABC
ABC has: Ugly Betty Counter--Fox has: Bones Both young and strong with the female 18-34 demo, both leading off a night for their respective network and handling it well. Advantage: push
The best of the rest: ABC has: Brothers & Sisters, AFV, Wife Swap, Supernanny, Boston Legal, Men in Trees, and October Road Counter--Fox has: Prison Break and ???
So yes, if ABC had even a rudimentary level of skill programming around its very strong building blocks, it would be the #1 network by a mile...
Does anyone have overnights on how MyTV's two bikini pageant specials did last night?
Today's Mediaweek story by John Consoli reports that the telenovellas won't be returning to Tuesdays, and these M18-49 aimed reality specials will be continuing on beyond the May Sweep.
House was called the best medical drama since ER by the Washington Post, before it even premiered.
And might I just inquire--if House's early ratings were 'disastrous', what adjective would you apply to Drive's?
Right... but even though Fox aired ads NON-STOP during the 2004 MLB Playoffs, House premiered around 6 million viewers, and stayed there until it doubled-up on itself when airing after Idol in the winter. The saving grace was that it was universally critically acclaimed, and the "Dr. House is the best character to hit television in years" sound-byte helped a lot. It also stayed around 6 million during that Fall '04 run (as opposed to dropping 25% by episode 4).
House's ratings were disastrous.
Drive's got it cancelled
okay, gotta get to my lunch... the word's coming down that, yes, House repeats will fill Mondays @ 8pm (Marc? Is this series not being more over-exposed than Grey's Anatomy?)

Yeah, but - 5th Grader is on Thursday and...
Ya know, never mind...all I was doing was just saying Fox has more than just House and AI.

No disagreement there -- Fox ahs come a long way in the last two years... However, ABC has even more key shows, and should be winning the season if it had made some better programming decisions.

I wasn't watching it at all, but I remember hearing all my wimmen-friends sighing dreamily about that guy who played Bertie Wooster in those Jeeves adaptations.
FOX actually is pretty good at figuring out which low-rated shows have a good shot at finding an audience. They're just bad at getting those shows on the air in the first place.
