-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, of course, stood well above the Tuesday competitors courtesy of its combination of American Idol and House. Comparably, Fox outdelivered ABC, CBS, NBC and The CW combined by two percent among adults 18-49. CBS held the distant No. 2 spot in total viewers and adults 18-49, while third-place ABC got some mileage out of the live Dancing With the Stars results show. NBC, meanwhile, continued to lag, while The CW tied for the fourth-place spot in the demo.
Fox’s American Idol opened the evening with 25.66 million viewers and a 9.6 rating/27 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that bested CBS’ No. 2 NCIS (Viewers: 14.08 million; A18-49: 3.1/ 9) by a hefty 11.58 million viewers and 210 percent among adults 18-49. But year-to-year, the still top-rated reality/competition was down by 3.01 million viewers and 17 percent in the demo (Viewers: 28.67 million; A18-49: 11.5/30 on April 25, 2006). Has the novelty worn off or is this really just a boring season?
Also in the 8 p.m. hour was NBC’s Dateline (Viewers: #3, 4.94 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 4), two episodes of ABC’s on-the-bubble George Lopez (Viewers: #4, 4.76 million; A18-49: #3, avg. 1.6/ 4), and The CW’s Gilmore Girls (Viewers: #5, 3.74 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5). Comparably, Gilmore Girls on the year-ago evening (on former home the WB) averaged 4.98 million viewers and a 2.2/ 6 in the demo.
Fox’s House kept the winning momentum alive from 9-10 p.m., with 21.29 million viewers and an 8.5/21 among adults 18-49. Second was ABC’s Dancing With the Stars Results Show at solid 16.42 million viewers and a 4.2/10 in the demo. Comparably, that built from the 8:30 p.m. edition of George Lopez (Viewers: #3, 4.99 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4) by 11.43 million viewers and 162 percent in the demo.
Also in 9 p.m. hour was CBS’ potentially questionable The Unit (Viewers: #3, 9.86 million; A18-49: #3, 2.9/ 7), a repeat of NBC’s on-the-bubble Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #4, 4.53 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3), and the season-finale of Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search For the Next Doll on The CW (Viewers: #5, 3.49 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4). Comparably, retention for Pussycat Dolls out of Gilmore Girls was worth noting at 93 percent in viewers and 94 percent in the demo.
Opposite repeats, ABC’s Boston Legal scored a rare 10 p.m. victory, with 10.12 million viewers and a 2.5/ 7 among adults 18-49. But retention out of the second half of lead-in Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 16.96 million; A18-49: 4.3/11 at 9:30 p.m.) of just 60 percent in total viewers and 58 percent among adults 18-49 limits it to “Honorable Mention.” Second in the hour was a repeat of CBS’ Cold Case (Viewers: 8.13 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 7), followed by a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: 7.67 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 6).
