Maybe they aired them because 'My Own Worst Enemy' is a well written program with a small but loyal audience who want to see it through to the end.
Nah, that ain't it.
There are lots of reasons to keep airing a show with abysmal ratings that has to go eventually. T:SCC and My Own Worst Enemy were both expensive prestigious productions for their networks--big name franchise, big name star--and disastrous ratings. But they have to air something, and they hate having shelled out so much money for something they don't even put on the air.
I mean, Pushing Daisies is still airing new eps. That got even worse ratings last week than My Own Worst Enemy did last night--maybe half a mil more viewers, but only 1.5 in the demo. It's all going to be on DVD, so how is that rewarding viewers? It's just masochism, is what it is.
So it struck me last night that I've invested a total of 12 years into The Practice and Boston Legal. My goodness. The way last night's show ended was absolutely nothing like the way the first episode of The Practice began. What an interesting run. It had its ups and downs, but for the most part, it was reliably enjoyable television.

Oh but that's DIFFERENT.
Nope, but nice straw man argument.

At least SCC and MOWE are not actually hurting another hit show (PB doesn't qualify at this point), unlike Fringe with House.

MyNetworkTV came just 20,000 viewers short of crashing through the 2 million viewer threshold, and all its key demos (except A25-54) were all-time network weekly average highs.
Really? Explain why it's a straw man argument. I would really enjoy reading that.

You know, I seem to recall getting royally blasted here when I suggested lead-OUTS can in some cases hurt or help their lead-INS. Can I take this as your admission I was completely right, Zitrone?

And happily for your fragile sense of self esteem, you will never have to know.
I think it will all come down to costs. I don't know the costs of the Law and Orders or Medium, but if they are expensive, it's possible that NBC could cut Medium or L&O. Heroes is expensive but I think they will keep it unless it bombs in the spring.
I think a likely scenario is 8 PM being reality shows or cheaper comedies Monday through Friday and then the more expensive dramas at 9 PM.

One thing I will say about BL is that it is a stable performer. Not every show on ABC has to be a huge hit. ABC needs a few shows that are utility players and can fill in holes nicely. BL was that for most of its time.

Considering Boston Legal was never a true ratings success, you have to give ABC credit for keeping it on the air of four and one-half seasons.
