If nothing else, 5th Grader proved once and for all that most of the stuff that kids are forced to learn is for standardized tests and useless in the real world.
This is very highly unlikely as this show attracts the demo that the networks love because they have a higher income bracket. This is the same demo that watched West Wing and to some extent, Studio 60.

IS BL in Big Trouble??? Perhaps this IS the mystery "hit" that will be canceled

Posted 28 February 2007 12:05 PM by vlis Last March, the debut of “The Loop” in the Wednesday 9:30 p.m. post-“Idol” timeslot retained just 57 percent of its lead-in, averaging a 6.5.
Another sitcom, “Free Ride,” retained just 48 percent of “Idol’s” audience in the same timeslot last year.
“Smarter” is now the top-rated premiere for any new program this year among adults 18-49 and total viewers. It also matched Fox’s best numbers this season for any non-“Idol” program, tying a rating for usual Tuesday 9 p.m. occupant “House” earlier this season.

I think it is Jericho. I was just looking at the Demos on Jericho before it went on hiatus. It started off well, but then its numbers dropped to what would be acceptable for Friday night (VEGAS LIKE) but not for Wednesday at 9:00PM. It was like 2.7. CBS has had problems with Wednesadays at 9. They tried comedy for a while. Did not work. The Friday night slot did well over the years with CSI, then JAG, now CTH. CTH is JB's favorite show according to an interview he gave. So since JB owns 7 hours of prime time on CBS, I don't think CBS is gonna mess with him by cancelling CTH. JMHO.
Also, I do not think CTH has ever been referred to as a "hit" show, sleeper, yes, but not a bona fide hit. Jericho, OTOH was touted as a hit by CBS. THey have given it mounds of publicity unlike CTH.I think they spent a lot of money to try to make it a hit, but it hasn't worked. It's return was DOA last Wednesday, picking up where it left off in the Fall.
I agree. Those are the rumblings I'm hearing anyway.
I totally agree. Ausiello put out his hinch even before Jericho returned which indicates that Jericho wasn't in trouble at that time. The Unit is doing just fine (considering its up against AI) but Close To Home's demo rating is just horrible...it went down from an occasional 3.2 last season to a mere 2.5 for the last few eps.
But since Jericho isn't doing well rartingswise anymore t might be a goner as well.
I actually enjoyed Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader - probably because it was only 1/2 hour long. I thought it was much better than Identity, Deal or No Deal (too drawn out but I like the concept), or Unan1mous.
Not as good as 1 vs. 100, which I hope NBC will bring back next year (or this summer).
Out of those three, my order from most to least likely is CTH (it's had time to build, plus it was really close to being canceled before), Jericho (didn't do well in the first ep after the hiatus), the Unit (doubful, but I do wonder if there is a cost issue involved in that rumor...I would think with so many people involved, it has to be more expensive than most dramas)
I watched "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader." It is a great example of what is wrong with today's game shows. They literally asked 6 questions in the half hour. Jeopardy asks about 50 questions in a half hour. At one point they came back from commercial, asked a lady what R.E.M. stands for, she said she would go with the kid's answer, and they went to commercial before showing us what the kid's answer was. What genius decided that slowing down game shows was an improvement? If that guy was the commissioner of baseball, would he instruct pitchers to wait 5 minutes between each pitch? And then the umpire would look at the camera and say "we'll find out if that was a ball or a strike. . . right after this."

The show needs to be on earlier for kids to watch. It is a good equalizer for adults/kids, though I suspect that people with kids are going to be much better at the show than people without kids. Helping with homework will give parents a leg up on the average adult.

As far as the questions, I thought they were more geared towards stuff the kids just learned (ie: the triangle question)whereas adults would have forgotten it by now.
That is the whole point, isn't it?
Count me as a viewer that DID NOT watch 'Idol', but did tune in for '5th Grader'. I don't like 'Idol' because the singers are not very good most of the time, certainly not as good as you can get by simply turning on the radio or popping in a CD. The biggest problem with '5th Grader' is that, like 'American Idol' and 'Deal or No Deal', it moved at an excruciatingly slow pace. Half a dozen questions in the whole show? That is a style of 'suspense' in current TV shows (AI, DoND) that makes it unenjoyable, IMO.

I couldn't get myself to watch it.... Jeff Foxworthy isn't usually a part of my viewing experience. Perhaps I might though if the show catches on. I have a bad feeling about 1 vs 100 - I like the show so much and NBC seems to treat it lousy with it's slotting and pre-emptions... I think some behind the scenes politics will spell it's doom, but I really hope I'm wrong. If so, another network should really grab it and quick.

And 5th Grader still murdered Veronica Mars; mystery solved. LOL. Damn. I was hoping for a spike in the ratings this week, and there WAS a definite one (400,000 viewers, or so), but not nearly big enough. I never actually thought it WOULD be, though. I guess the last five episodes WILL be the deciding factor. They'll need much stronger signs of life for VM to get its wrap-up season that I want. Just one more, 13 episodes, tops!
Thanks for posting these, Travis!
If you want cheering up, you could check out TWoP. They're totally celebrating VM's stellar 2.74 million total viewers.
And sadly, I tend to think they're right in thinking it'll probably be enough for CW to renew it.
