How is that nice? It will only encourage the folks in charge to stay away from year round programming which is what we need. I'm not a fan of a lot of these reality shows but I'm at least glad ABC is trying original stuff this summer rather than air the repeats. Who seriously watches these repeats time and time again? With 100+ channels, there's always something better on or you know, people can always go outside.
I would rather have GOOD repeat programing than the crappy "year round" programming that ABC and NBC has given us this summer.

Only Wipeout has done well in the ratings, with most of these shows just sucking it.

Can I vote for a future with the best of both worlds: scripted fare offered year round?

Didn't the first Star Trek only last like a season or two on national TV due to low ratings? The real successes have been either in syndication or on UPN.

As usual, a lot would depend on the concept and execution, but Star trek is a Scifi frnchise that can and has been a success on mainstream TV.

On the subject of remakes, CBS may have a ptential BIG one available.

The lines are a little blured, but it looks as if CBS Corp. now owns the Rights, at least TV rights, to the Star Trek Franchise. I would not be surprised that if the New Movie is a BIG hit next summer, that we could see a new Star Trek series by the Fall of 2010, on CBS. Thats about 6 years after the last series went dark on UPN.

Sci Fi and Network TV...for whatever reason they are just not compatible with a few very rare exceptions (HEROES)...I'm not sure if even STAR TREK could overcome that hurdle.

Enterprise was a great concept that was poorly executed. It became a 3 character show, much like the original.

As I stated in a previous post, Rick Berman really ran the franchise in the ground. Get the right person to get the proper "Gene Rodenberry" direction back, and Star Trek can/will see the glory days again that they had with ST:TNG

CBS is going ahead with the remake of "Streets of San Francisco".

There were 2 main preoblems with Enterprise:
1. The show was set earlier in time than other versions of Star Trek.
2. the show was full of time travel.

Problem #1 could easily be overcome if the show had simply attempted to be more cerebral and dealt with the expansion of humanity into the universe of characters. We will see if the new movie can overcome this same problem.
Problem #2 is fatal and will no doubt plague any future Star Trek versions as well since Sci-Fi seems so enamored with the topic of time travel. Heroes, LOST, Terminator: SCC, Journeyman, etc... If CBS ever attempts another Star Trek franchise, they need to make a NO TIME TRAVEL pact so the show doesn't get trapped in a pile of...

Sure as long as I can still get some of my favorite reality shows to come along for the ride too. I was really bummed that Swingtown was thrown into the summer this year. The show really has been a fun one this summer. Light, easy and not to mention, a pretty decent selection of 70s music on top of it.

You make a point but if I saw the episode last March, I really don't need to see it again. While I know people will say the same thing about syndication (hence why Seinfeld is still popular), I still put that in a totally different world. I catch syndicated programs when I have time. My primetime shows are apointment TV and when something is in repeats, its no longer appointment viewing.

Well I don't watch these shows during the regular season. And I am sure there are others who are just watching these episodes now. It is really annoying that people assume that the summer audience consists of the exact same people as the regular season audience.

I'm not totally against summer repeats. Summer repeats of newer shows are a good idea imo but from the looks of things you have a computer and most of the nets have great online players. I would hope that most of the nets would follow in ABC's footsteps with the likes of Lost and simply have the whole season available online all the time, adding new eps as the show goes on. I'm not overly thrilled about any of these new programs coming up. Its very likely I'll go back and watch the first few seasons of Lost I didn't watch when they first came around. I'm currently watching Gossip Girl online through a spanish you-tube like service. The spanish closed captioning doesn't bother me and I get to work on my espanol at the same time. Big Grin

This is an article from my local paper that I thought I would share. It is a good synopsis of what we discuss here, I think. Hope the link works.

If you are just watching the episodes now, it isn't exactly 'appointment tv' for you. A significant number (likely most) of the people watching the CBS procedurals are people watching again, not people watching for the first time. I don't have a problem with shows being aired a second time, but the networks really should get rid of the 3rd+ airings and offer original product instead.

DRAGNET remake - in addition to the weak Ethan Embry as O'Neill's sidekick, this show ran into the same trend that the even better ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION on CBS did, namely that the L&O's and the CSI's were at their zenith and they had set a trend that was murder to buck. A pair of cops chasing down bad guys the old fashioned way just wasn't where the action was. As far as Eva Longoria, she was only in the "burn-off" season of 03-04 in 10 eps, when the real fate of the show was decided in the winter and spring of 03 when DRAGNET was a midseason replacement and sank in the ratings after a decent start.

*******

Nina Tassler - "If shows don't succeed, it's not because they are daring or different, there was something wrong in their execution."

I say, rock on, particularly to those who complain that this or that can't make it on CBS. SMITH and CANE, botched, JERICHO, not botched but could have been written and acted better. SWINGTOWN, another production that imo came up short, and FLASHPOINT, a decent show with an uninspiring cast that may hold up, may not, we'll see.
