Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 7/28/08

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 7.39 million, Fox: 6.87, NBC: 5.79, ABC: 3.34, CW: 1.11

-Adults 18-49:
CBS and Fox: 2.2 rating/6 share each, NBC: 1.8/ 5, ABC: 1.1/ 3, CW: 0.4/ 1

----------

-Monday’s Summer Disappointments:
American Gladiators (NBC), High School Musical – Get in the Picture (ABC), Nashville Star (NBC), Wanna Bet (ABC), The Mole (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Despite airing all repeats, CBS and Fox opened the week on a winning note, with CBS the most-watched network and the two tying among adults 18-49. CBS aired encore telecasts of The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #2, 5.55 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.7 rating/6 share), which is more than worthy of a larger audience, How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 5.29 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5), Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 9.15 million; A18-49: #1, 2.9/ 8), The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #2, 7.46 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 7) and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 8.45 million; A18-49: #1, 2.0/ 6). And Fox ran repeats of Bones (Viewers: #1, 6.29 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/ 6), which opens Wednesday this fall, and House (Viewers: #2, 7.45 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 7), which anchors Tuesday.

NBC finished third overall in both total viewers and adults 18-49 with its combination of American Gladiators (Viewers: #3, 5.37 million; A18-49: #1, 1.9/ 6), Nashville Star (Viewers: #3, 6.07 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 4) and Dateline (Viewers: #2, 5.94 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/ 5). And ABC was virtually off the map with its line-up of High School Musical – Get in the Picture (Viewers: #4, 3.58 million; A18-49: #4, 1.0/ 3), Wanna Bet (Viewers: #4, 3.40 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3) and The Mole (Viewers: #3, 3.05 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 3). Once you do a “D” list celebrity version a la The Mole, it is hard, if not impossible, to return with a regular contestant version.

Last, and very least, were repeats of Gossip Girl (Viewers: 1.20 million; A18-49: 0.5/ 2) and One Tree Hill (Viewers: 1.02 million; A18-49: 0.4/ 1) on the CW. New seasons of both dramas will begin on Monday, Sept. 1 (Labor Day).

To keep you interested (which is certainly not easy in the summer), here is the new prime-time Monday schedule beginning in September (with new shows in caps):

9:30 p.m. Samantha Who?

Very nice to see the Scripted programs out perform the Reality/Unscripted programs, despite being repeat airings.

Will be interesting to see dumont's updated Sweeps numbers and see how much ABC has fallen behind and if 4th place is a solid placing.

ABC will get its weekly boost tonight with Wipeout. It will remain solidly in 4th place in viewers and households, but CBS and ABC are still close in the demo.

FOX Prevails in A18-49 for 2008 July Sweep; Surging CBS First in Viewers, Households & Now Third in A18-49

With a tie in A18-49 with CBS last night, FOX maintained its hold on first in A18-49 where it averages a 2.0 in A18-49, followed by NBC in second with 1.6, CBS and ABC tied third with 1.5 (though ABC is verging on 1.4), The CW fifth with 0.6, and MyNetworkTV last with a 0.3 average. Year-over-year, all the six networks are showing A18-49 declines from last July, and overall, A18-49 is down 10% across the six nets from last July. The largest year-over-year declines are being experienced by The CW (down 20%), CBS (down 13%) and MyNetworkTV (down 13%).

After 26 nights, CBS holds on to its customary lead in households and viewership, with FOX in second, NBC third, ABC fourth, CW fifth and MNT is last.

In households, which overall are down by 4% from last July, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and MyNetworkTV are all down only 1% to 4% from the same as last summer, while The CW is having a rough summer in households where its numbers have fallen off the most by 21%.

In viewers, only FOX is up by 1% from last year, while CBS and MyNetworkTV are even when compared to last years July Sweep. NBC and ABC are down by just 1% from last year. Overall viewership is down 2% to last July (down 430,000 viewers on average). The biggest year-over-year decline in viewership is being experienced by the repeat-heavy The CW which is down 21% year-over-year (a loss of 411,000 viewers on average).

The data for last weekend is based on FAST National numbers, whereas previous nights this this year and last years comparative numbers are based upon final Nielsen numbers.

Nota Bene. This year's Sweep includes the low-HUT Fourth of July whereas last year's Sweep started on July 5th and did not include the Fourth of July.

Sorry Marc but it is NOT going to get a larger audience...these episodes have aired multiple times during the strike...there's a limit of how many times people can take the same punchlines.

I was stunend to read the article behind the blurb at the top of the page about CBS remaking "The Streets of San Francisco"...CBS now falling back on yet ANOTHER police procedural and a remake of a show that ran when a lot of viewers weren't even born.
Ugh.

Well, all three are close together in the demo.

CBS' Monday-Tuesday combo is stronger than ABC's M-T combo, so CBS should still comeout ahead. NBC should stay in 2nd, in the demo, come thursday morning.

HSM did the best for ABC last night. Eeker I would of hoped more people watched The Mole. I actually got hooked on it, and its not that bad.

CBS comedies are doing fine. Hopefully TBBT gets over the 10 million mark this fall.

If you can get Michael Douglas and Richard Hatch to reprise their roles, then CBS may just have a hit on their hands. Big Grin

Seriously, This seems too much like a straight forward police drama. The current wave of Crime Dramas have thet element of Science involved in the background, weather it be chemstry, mathmatics, DNA tresting or profiling.

Why is it that people keep making this same incorrect comment week after week? The Big Bang Theory episode that aired last night had only ever aired 1 time before. HIMYM and 2&1/2Men were on their 3rd airing, but not BBT.

Ugh.
CBS apparently thinks that the key to future financial/ratings success is more police procedurals that lean towards the elderly demo.

I did not realize it was only the second run. I stand corrected. However that illustrates that many others may also be thinking these eps are ones that were run over and over again during the strike and did not bother to tune in. answered your own question...the majority of people are convinced that this was yet another reapeat just as I was...and did not tune in.

The reason people wonder about BBT is Marc keeps making the comment every week about it getting a larger audience. I know Marc likes the show, and means well for it, but the fact remains BBT is doing fine for summer repeats. No repeat sitcom this side of Two and Half Men could expect more at 8:00. It is actually doing better most weeks than HIMYM or Old Christine did in the 8:00 time slot last summer. Look, everyone knows at 8:00 and against the great competition in that hour this fall it will never be a really high rated show, but if it keeps doing what it is doing it will be here for a long time to come. It does just as well as HIMYM, relative to the 8:00 vs. 8:30 time slot, and HIMYM is entering its fourth season. BBT is doing just fine.

If the Dragnet remake bombed (despite Eva Longoria in the cast), this doesn't stand a chance.

I think San Francisco is a great place for police drama (ie, Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Chinatown); but I hope they at least come up with an original name other than 'The Streets of San Francisco'. Without Karl Malden and Michael Douglas it's like 'Miami Vice' without Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
I do agree with Ms. Tassler's assessment that shows fail because of flaws in their execution and not necessarily in their premise, excluding 'Viva Laughlin', which was just bad in everything.
