I didn't know that shows recorded were counted in the overnights. I bet they aren't.

1. Seat4F is correct - it is only unduplicated audience...those who watched on Saturday, but did not watch on Monday

2. Others are correct - the nielsen rule stipulates that it only counts for shows that air the same national commercials. For this week, it is only HEROES. Chuck, the CBS Saturday repeats and K-VILLE on Friday had different commercials, and therefore their averages will not be cumed

3. The new rule is currently not on hold, although Nielsen is revisiting the implementation and may backtrack and not allow it.

4. I dont know if the weekly averages to date in the thread are correct, as with the current Nielsen rule, the HEROES number on Monday will go up, and NBC's Saturday 8-9pm HEROES number will not be included in NBC's weekly average...they will not have a rating for Saturday 8-9pm hour and their weekly average will be for only 20.5 hours of programming (22 - Sat 8-9pm hour - Sunday 7-730p, which has no national commercials for NBC, so it is also not rated by Nielsen). Part of the reason many in the advertising and networks are objecting to this new Nielsen rule.

There has been a report that KVille also was the same broadcast.

When it all is said and done, the Heroes number will probably be close to 17.5-17.7M.

regardless of what happens this rule is going to get tossed after a week... If Nielsen is smart, even though NBC was clever to take advantage of the loophole, they'll just toss the rule aside. It creates serious problems in the ratings. You have to show the exact same commercial so every show on Thursday night airing Movie promos that say opening tomorrow night would NEVER get to use the system.

Bottom line is NBC "owed" Nissan more eyes then the premiere delivered and saw the loophole and jumped on it. Outside of that it's just another example of how the system is broken.

And, with all the DVR usage these days, the numbers will be going up (maybe 10%-20%) for many of the other shows as well. DVR usage is bringing the final ratings data into somewhat uncharted territory. It may be a month or so before we get an idea how much the numbers will go up on average. Likely, future (the next month) numbers will rise less than the premiere week numbers.

Nice post, thank you. This rule was
about ad value issues and was never
meant to allow wholesale manipulation
of ratings or a reinventing of the
wheel. There are probably several
other bad angles to this than the
thursday thing you mentioned, but that
makes the point effectively.

Maybe, but kudos for NBC. Someone did their homework and used it to their advantage. Heroes will be in the top 10 which is great.

True. Also, quite a good comeback to the rather illogical cheering about NBC's ratings gimmick.

it's the star wars rule.... the re-releases should NEVER count towards the totals....

If the CW shows gossip girl two times a night for 6 days with the same commercials and draws 30M would it be right to say it was the most watched show of the week? not a chance.

Overall season average numbers don't care about week to week declines. The added numbers are pure gravy that no one else will have.

Congrats NBC.

If 30 million different people watched? Yes. It would have more than any other show FOR THE WEEK.

Geez people, it's about numbers...nothing but numbers. Leave your old school thoughts far behind. It's a new world.

I see it is about time someone came in here and shaked the cobwebs out of these old rafters.

Isn't it great that we can already count on another season of Heroes? I wish more of my favorites were like this (FNL, HIMYM, PB and TD to name a few).
