-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC led this first Tuesday of the 2007-08 season in total viewers; House-ignited Fox was No. 1 among adults 18-49. A 90-minute edition of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars kicked-off the evening on a winning note, with a hefty 18.34 million viewers and a 4.7 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m. Comparatively, a two-hour edition of Dancing With the Stars scored a similar 18.17 million viewers with a 5.2/14 in the demo on opening night Tuesday in 2006-07 (Sept. 19, 2006). That led into the 90-minute season-premiere of Boston Legal at 10.31 million viewers and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 9:30-11 p.m. Boston Legal opened last season with a healthier 11.28 million viewers and a 3.4/ 9 in the demo on Sept. 19, 2006. While no one should have expected Boston Legal to fully maintain the Dancing With the Stars lead-in, retention out of the last half-hour of Dancing (Viewers: 19.79 million; A18-49: 5.0/12 at 9 p.m.) of just 57 percent in viewers and 52 percent among adults 18-49 makes the legal drama a “loser” last night.
The third-season premiere of Fox drama Bones opened with a respectable 8.26 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 3.2/ 9 among adults 18-49. Compared to its second-season opener (Viewers: 8.61 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 9 on Aug. 30, 2006), that was an increase of 19 percent in the demo. Lead-out House rose to first overall from 9-10 p.m., with a hefty 18.13 million viewers and a 7.7/19 among adults 18-49. Comparably, House opened last season (on Sept. 5, 2006) with a similar 19.65 million viewers and a 7.2/20 in the demo.
Over at CBS, the underrated NCIS began season five with a healthy 13.67 million viewers (#2) and a 3.1/ 9 among adults 18-49 (#3) from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was right on par with its fourth season premiere (Viewers: 13.48 million; A18-49: 3.4/10 on Sept. 19, 2006). The third season opener of male-driven The Unit followed, with 10.72 million viewers (#3) and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 9 p.m. Compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 11.81 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9), that was a decline of 1.09 million viewers and 18 percent in the demo. The Unit led into the debut of drama Cane, which finished second behind NBC’s Law & Order: SVU with 11.12 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, former failed occupant Smith opened with 11.00 million viewers and a heftier 3.6/10 among adults 18-49 (and, keep in mind that it was canceled after just three episodes). Regardless, this is good sampling for Cane.
A two-hour edition of NBC’s The Biggest Loser did not impress, with just 6.64 million viewers (#4) and a 2.9/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3t) from 8-10 p.m. Compared to one week earlier when The Biggest Loser did not have to face all original programming (Viewers: 7.94 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9 on Sept. 18), that was a decrease of 1.3 million viewers and 15 percent in the demo. On NBC at 10 p.m. was the season-premiere of aforementioned veteran Law & Order: SVU, with a dominant 12.10 million viewers and a 4.8/13 among adults 18-49. One year earlier, Law & Order: SVU kicked-off with 14.55 million viewers and a 5.2/14 in the demo.
Over at the CW was week two of the new season of Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #5, 2.98 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 4), followed by the debut of drama Reaper at 3.22 million viewers (#5) and a 1.5/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#5) at 9 p.m. Last fall, former occupant Veronica Mars kicked-off its season (on Oct. 3, 2006) with an almost identical 3.36 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo. While the results for Reaper are certainly nothing to crow about, growth of 240,000 out of Beauty and the Geek is worth positively noting.
