-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a night of split leadership on this depressed Thursday, with CBS the most-watched network and ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49 (one-tenth of a rating point ahead of CBS in the demo). But several of the established favorites -- Survivor, CSI, Grey’s Anatomy and The Office -- continue to lose steam.

CBS mainstay Survivor: Tocantins won the 8 p.m. hour, with 11.32 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/11 share among adults 18-49. One year earlier, however, the Survivor: Micronesia edition was stronger at 12.90 million viewers and a 4.3/13 in the demo on April 24, 2008, based on the final nationals. SPOILER ALERT: If you have not seen last night’s episode of Survivor, stop reading. But arrogant Tyson’s blindside was, in my humble opinion, one of the most satisfying moments in the history of this reality/competition. Even better, in fact, was seeing equally obnoxious “Coach” suddenly kissing up to Sierra in next week’s preview.

Also in the 8 p.m. hour was Fox’s underrated Bones (Viewers: #2, 8.22 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.2/ 7), NBC sitcoms My Name is Earl (Viewers: #3, 5.50 million; A18-49: #2, 2.2/ 7) and recently introduced Parks and Recreation (Viewers: #4, 5.23 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.3/ 7), a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (Viewers: #4, 5.12 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 5), which stepped in for ousted In the Motherhood and Samantha Who?, and veteran Smallville on the CW (Viewers: #5, 3.05 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 4). Parks and Recreation continues to lose steam as follows:

Parks and Recreation (NBC)
4/09/09 – Viewers: 6.88 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 9
4/16/09 – Viewers: 6.02 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 7
4/23/09 – Viewers: 5.23 million; A18-49: 2.3/ 7

CBS’ CSI and Grey’s Anatomy on ABC shared leadership from 9-10 p.m. as follows:

Thursday 9 p.m.
CSI (CBS)
Viewers: 14.45 million (#1), A18-49: 3.6/ 9 (#2)

Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Viewers: 13.22 million (#2), A18-49: 4.9/ 13 (#1)

But one year earlier, CSI averaged 17.02 million viewers and a 4.7/12 among adults 18-49; and Grey’s Anatomy 16.37 million viewers and a 6.5/16 in the demo. Are we all just plain bored with these aging shows?

Also airing from 9-10 p.m. was Hell’s Kitchen on Fox (Viewers: #3, 6.85 million; A18-49: #4, 3.0/ 8), NBC’s The Office (Viewers: #3, 7.21 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/10) and 30 Rock (Viewers: #4, 6.35 million; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 8), and Supernatural on the CW (Viewers: #5, 2.76 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3). Despite a below average performance, worth noting for The Office was growth out of Parks and Recreation of 1.98 million viewers and 61 percent among adults 18-49.

ABC moved into the winner’s circle at 10 p.m. care of the just-renewed Private Practice at 9.23 million viewers and a 3.4/10 among adults 18-49. This was, in fact, the first time an original episode of Private Practice faced NBC’s Southland (Viewers: #2, 8.03 million; A18-49: #2, 2.5/ 7) and Harper’s Island on CBS (Viewers: #3, 7.48 million; A18-49: #3, 2.0/ 6), which both lost more steam in week three. Take a look:

Southland (NBC)
4/09/09 – Viewers: 9.86 million; A18-49: 3.2/ 9
4/16/09 – Viewers: 9.61 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 9
4/23/09 – Viewers: 8.03 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 7

Harper’s Island (CBS)
4/09/09 – Viewers: 10.21 million; A18-49: 2.6/ 8
4/16/09 – Viewers: 7.82 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6
4/23/09 – Viewers: 7.48 million; A18-49: 2.0/ 6

Although the audience for Southland was consistent at 10:30 p.m., Harper’s Island dipped by 12 percent (5.0/ 8 to 4.4/ 8), and that makes it a “loser.”

The Office was sharp and funny last night, and deserves a better lead-in (and lead-out) than NBC seems capable of giving it.

But Parks&Rec should changes its name to Dorks& Retch. It was just flat-out awful. I saw some promise in the pilot, and even the second episode, but last night was a trainwreck. And Amy Poehler was actually unfunny. I mean, that's how bad the scripts are--even she can't do anything with them.

Can't NBC just run The Mighty B! instead?

Wow, viewership was really down across the board. Perhaps the looming apocalypse in Pakistan has got everyone down? Eeker Nothing like Taliban militants advancing on the nukes in Islamabad to darken your day.

How long before CBS takes a page from NBC's playbook and ships Harper's Island off to Saturdays? This show is making Eleventh Hour look like a blockbuster. Perhaps EH will live to see another season after all...

Everything was down last night as the temperature has gotten close to 80 degrees for the first time this year so I feel there was no real loser here tonight, well maybe there were a few and I'll point them out in my column a little later today.

I would suggest CBS do a little experimenting and move Harper's Island to Saturdays and see how this Barbra Streisand special does to see if they can open up Saturdays again b/c its needed.

Well not everything was down. Supernatural was up in demos and up 21% in viewers from last year (but the results is still its worst performance of the year).

Yikes for every single show (it looks like).

Though to be a broken record.

Supernatural is up versus the year ago when it hit a series low of 2.27 and a 1.0 in the adult demo. So its up 21% in viewers. It continues to be up in every single week in both comparison to same week last year (and episode to episode comparisons, when possible).

Smallville hit a series low. Down from 3.56 and a 1.4 in adults Demo (a decline of 15% in total viewers).

I couldn't agree more with this. Parks and Rec is terrible. Looks like the viewing public agrees too. Amy Poehler deserves better.

I think it is just that time of year where shows will be going down and down. Especially, the early shows. The weather is getting better and it is staying light longer so people are not watching TV. This weekend they are talking summer like weather for a good deal of the country, so things will continue to go down.

Changes in viewing patterns are affecting shows more than you believe Marc. Everyone my age watches via the internet or DVR or records in some way. Watching TV as its broadcasted is dying in many ways.

Time of the year has an affect and with the changes in viewing patterns, the change of seasons will see even great impact on ratings.

It looks like Thursday tied Monday in the 18-49 demo, though Thursday got its butt kicked by Monday in the 18-34 demo. Supernatural edged out 90210 in the 18-49 demo, but was beaten in the 18-34 demo.
...and, of course, America's Next Top Model beat all the shows in those demo and viewer measures.
