Anyway I hope it doesn't overtake SURVIVOR in the ratings.
This DOND overexposure on NBC is so reminiscent of the demise of Who Wants to be a millionaire on ABC -- I know it's very tempting for NBC to strip it to 3-4 times a week, especially when it seems to be doing so well and nothing else they have right now works, but it's reached saturation level and I agree, after this giveaway deal is over, this Deal will never be the same in the ratings again.
I disagree with you. NBC had had DOND on its regular schedule 2 times per week max since it started its run. Before the strike they did occasionaly have extra shows on, but it was not that often. Since the strike, they have increased the number of extra shows, but with the lack of fresh content due to the strike, who can really blame them?
On the other hand, ABC had Millionaire on its regular schedule for 5 times per week at one time. But I still believe that what killed this show was the constant celebrity editions, where the celebrities did not care, and there were always other celebrities shouting out answers.
DOND had shows 3 times a week since mid December -- sometimes going back to 2, but more often than not it was 3. Millionaire only had 5 times a week when it was launched as a strip for 2 weeks initially. DOND was launched the same way. Like I said, DOND is following a very similar path -- while they haven't had celebrity contestants yet (which I agree is what ultimately killed Millionaire), they've had/will have celebrity "participants" like Donald Trump and Ellen Degeneres. When ABC started suffering, they extended Millionaire from once a week, to twice, then ultimately 3 times a week. DOND is doing exactly the same thing right now.
Since the beginning of January, DOND has been on the regular NBC schedule for Mondays at 9 and Wednesdays at 8. Other than that they have used it on Thursdays at 8 for maybe 3 (or 4) times. But considering the ratings that repeats of Office and Earl were getting I don't think they could be blamed for putting on the extra show. But I believe yesterday was the last time for the Thursday special edition.
Yes, Millionaire was on the ABC regular schedule for 5 nights a week other than when it premiered as a 2 week strip. I believe at one point they had it on Sundays, Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If I am mistaken here, it is only by 1 night. I am positive they had it at least 4 nights per week regularly.
DOND is not following a similar path.
With the lack of ratings and fresh content for NBC, I can not fault them for airing DOND 2 times regularly, and special editions on occasion. But they do stop airing the show during the summer (which I believe ABC did not do). I believe that the DOND fad will fade with time, not with number of episodes. So NBC is getting the most out of the show while it is hot that they could. Because who knows how long the fad will last?
DOND has also been on Fridays and Sundays in that time -- between alternating Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, it's been on 3 times a week, more often than not, as I originally said.
Regarding Millionaire, just like the DOND schedule we just discussed, Millionaire at its peak was on regularly on Sundays, Tuesdays, and then expanded to Thursdays. Just like DOND was overextended to prop up shows in Fridays and Sundays in some cases, so was Millionaire used elsewhere from time to time. It's a close parallel to me -- that's my opinion: you're entitled to yours and I'm entitled to mine.

Actually, I just read the opposite the other day, that more and more advertisers are finding out that their commercials are increasingly being watched on playback. I'll look for the article and add it here.
I found the article
-----edited by Holly for length----
"That’s pretty significant and vastly different from what you see in most primetime programs," notes Sternberg. Typically, commercials on primetime shows lose more than 5 percent of a program’s rating.
That quote actually proves my original point. Shows typically loose 5% from the ratings (presumably the Live+Same Day that we discuss here since the C3 rating is based on Live+3 day so it would be stupid to compare it to Live+7). The Live+ 7 ratings are largely irrelevant to advertisers because DVR users aren't watching commercials.
ETA: After re-reading my post, I think it's possible that the 5% is from the Live+3, but since we never see those numbers, we have no real basis for comparison. Since it's not specified, I would still assume Live+SD.

Hi folks. i have been reading this forum for a long time and finally decided to join. I think all of this Lost talk is interesting. I am currently watching season one on DVD. I missed the boat when the show first started. I have a question for you fisher. Why are you always so mean? It seems like you just pick on people. I dont think you're opinion is any more important than that of watsonpop because you are unfair and rude. Watsonpop seems to follow the discussion. You just focus over and over on the same topics. There is a pushing daisies forum on here. why dont you go there to bash the show? I like so much about this forum but not your participation. I have never seen anyone ask for your opinion. I enjoy reading so many other posters opinions including "pop" over yours. Dont be so mean to people. Using the wrong your or you're doesnt take away from someones point. P>S> I read his post and the your and you're are used correctly. It's childish when you resort to that. That's what my fifth grader does when she is being a brat.

Beyond the nominal content I don't see a tone or theme or point of view.
What I see here is a series of scenes strung together.

There's a great feature now that your a member. It's called ignore. I only have to see his ridiculous rants when someone replies to him. Try not to be one of them! On to the good stuff. Welcome. There are some really informed people on here and i enjoy the site every day. Thanks for defending me but FYI it's wHatsonpop. I like the pop nickname though! Hapy posting!

Well, it has the usual Candace Bushnell premise... all women are sluts who will spread their legs whenever a man comes within a 50 mile radius. Or, as "Mad TV" put it, "Whore! Whore! Whore!"
The cinematography, underscore and the main titles are all very solid. It's a shame that's all wasted on such craptastic scripts. And why aren't Shields, Raver and Price playing lesbians? I mean, they're practically scissoring each other in the promos.
Agree on the filming and underscore.
I think Raver has been OK but Shields and Price have been very weak.

Amen, TVmaniac. Many of that person's comments seem strictly to serve the purpose of being rude, crass, or mean. Even though many of the rest of us disagree on other issues, as an example me and pop just now on commercials and DVR playback, we don't resort to the crude, elementary school BS that said person resorts to. I'm guessing there are many like you reading posts that are feeling the same way.
I think the real problem falls into the been there, done that catergory. Not only was S&TC a huge hit , it was a phenomenon. LJ and CM just seem like retreads. Even with Bushnell involved, LJ seems like a pale comparison. Besides Bushnell was never the big dram for S&TC, it was the perfect casting and writing.

Well said Chimera. But we have spoken of "it" too much. That's exactly what he wants. I subscribe to the "ignore it and it will go away" philosophy. I've had it on ignore sine the beginning of the year. Unfortunately i still see some of his comments in replies by other posters, but it's just better without. PIfeedback doesnt need an Anne Coulture - that's what pisher is to me. No depth or substance, just here to cause a commotion.

I think 20 editions could indeed be the end of Survivor's run at its normal at 8:00 Thursday timeslot. However, this show has a remarkable run, which almost no one foresaw. So I wouldn't count against it going longer. Maybe it will turn into something like what TAR is now for CBS - tape one edition a year and use it to fill in when your fall schedule inevitably develops holes. It could last quite a while past 20 editions in that capacity. In the end, it might come down to how long MB wants to keep going.
Scissoring! LOL That just reminded me of my favorite South Park episode of this season!

Hi folks. i have been reading this forum for a long time and finally decided to join. I think all of this Lost talk is interesting.
What's really interesting is that last week we were mainly discussing Supernatural's ratings, and why they're so bad, and Lost was almost entirely forgotten.
quote:
I am currently watching season one on DVD.
(applauds politely)
quote:
I missed the boat when the show first started.
No, it was a PLANE when the show first started. Then a boat. Then a sub. Now a helicopter. Hey, how about a hovercraft? They haven't done a hovercraft yet!
quote:
I have a question for you fisher.
Wow, you used lowercase correctly, but got the first letter wrong! One step forward, two steps back.
quote:
Why are you always so mean?
"I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell." Harry S. Truman
But at least now we know the island on Lost isn't hell. Because the writers told us. Only I knew that already.
quote:
It seems like you just pick on people.
What do you mean "seems"?
quote:
I dont think you're opinion is any more important than that of watsonpop because you are unfair and rude.
And because you also can't tell the difference between 'you're' and 'your', and what is UP with that? Are you trying to make your old English teachers cry or something? Meanie!
quote:
Watsonpop seems to follow the discussion.
whatsonpop seems to be discussing me more than the ratings, even though he put me on ignore weeks ago. Or said he did. He's actually nasty to lots of people he doesn't agree with here. He's just not FUNNY.
quote:
You just focus over and over on the same topics.
TV ratings? Yeah, go figure.
quote:
There is a pushing daisies forum on here. why dont you go there to bash the show?
And I can just hear the PD fans wishing you would shut the hell up. But seriously--is anybody actually USING that forum?
quote:
I like so much about this forum but not your participation.
For the record, Marc Berman, who runs this forum, has personally told me he likes reading my posts. Doesn't always agree with them, of course. Maybe Marc's just a little less insecure than some other people here. Just a skootch.
quote:
I have never seen anyone ask for your opinion.
Actually, people do that all the time. And a lot of people AGREE with my opinions. Not all of them, but isn't that what makes conversation--you know--conversational?
quote:
I enjoy reading so many other posters opinions including "pop" over yours.
I appreciate you saying that, man. Seriously.

Millionaire was on more than just Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. At the same time they had it on Mondays (before or after MNF) and Wednesdays at the same time. I remember they added a Wednesday 10PM edition at the same time because affiliates were complaining that it was never on at 10PM leading into local news.
But like I said earlier, if (or when) DOND loses its luster, I think it will be more because of time in general, or because of stunting. Which is why Millionaire went down (celebrity edition stunting).
Nothing wrong, in my opinion, with using an asset to its fullest while it is available. NBC would be leaving money on the table by not showing DOND at least 2 times per week regularly and up to 3 times per week on occasion.
