And I am sure sales on ITunes are still very good.
Yeah, seriously. I was about ready to give up after the 4th or 5th episode, it just wasn't the series that Josh made it sound like before it premiered. However, the last 3 episodes have really shown an up tick in quality; both in direction and script. Last night's Thanksgiving episode showed that the show can go a little darker, and the last few weeks I've actually gotten that "Cruel Intentions" vibe critics talked about. Let's hope others catch on, and it's doing bigger numbers when it returns after the strike.
OK I don't get it... PD got above 10m for the first time since the pilot, 3.8 in demo, and it is "fading fast"?
And this is what happens folks, when people come to a ratings discussion thread EXCLUSIVELY to defend shows they like, neither knowing nor caring how ratings actually work.

First time it had a (great) lead-in, but also first time outside of its usual time slot.
Yes. Exactly one hour later than its usual time slot. With ads for it during the commercial breaks for Shrek and The Grinch. And this is a show that smart people watch, right? Well wrong, but I'm trying to see things from your perspective.

What sort of performance should PD deliver to be considered as something else than the worse show since Online Nation? Some perspective, please.
That's exactly what Marc gave you, and you didn't want it. But at least you're not calling him a troll. Yet.
PD should've done better, yes. But considering how limited it's audience is, I think that was expecting too much. It still gained viewers from last week's very poor performance and even after the decline, it was still better than it's weeks passed. Could've been better would have been a better phrase to you. Fading would be a big strech and fading fast is just a way to spin PD's ratings in a negative light without officially declaring it a loser.
*shrugs* PD dropped in the second half-hour. If I were ABC, I wouldn't really care. The overall number was fine. People were curious and some didn't continue to watch. It does fine, if unspectacular, in the 8PM hour. It's improving on the failure from a year ago. It's winning its timeslot, being the only show in the timeslot to average about a 3.0 in the demo. Those are reasons for ABC to renew it. Pisher doesn't like it. It's polarizing. So?
It could be far worse.

I'm a big fan of PD but I have to agree with the argument that it's fading. A loss like that from the lead-in and then again in the 2nd half is to just too much to ignore. It definitely is on a slippery slope despite the increase in numbers on the surface.

Again that's ridiculous, what did you expect, 20 millions people suddenly deciding they wanted to see this fairy tale about a pie maker resurrecting dead people? PD doesn't have the mass appeal of Shrek and will never be a hit show, but it did and will continue to do fine. It will get a second season, and Emmy's. Predicting an imminent death for PD is just weird, considering how well it actually does among all new shows.

Because Marc just said PD looks increasingly unlikely to get a second season, and you can't very well call him a troll, since this is his forum?
Not sure why I should be worried now about what's going to happen to PD next June. It's on, it's renewed, and that's that. If it gets canceled, I'll throw myself off a bridge then. For now, however, I'll just watch it every week. I feel badly that it's continued existence is taking years off your life (well, I don't feel that bad about it), but all I care about is that I've got a show to watch for the rest of the season, writers strike permitting.
As for Marc, he thought Life was dead in the water weeks ago, right up until it got renewed. Ditto for DSM. Marc's not infallible. Only I am infallible.
TV has changed. What numbers are meaningful has changed. The nets seem to be waking up to that fact, so maybe you should, too. Why cancel something with a small but loyal audience just so you can put something on that will likely get a smaller and not-so-loyal audience? For every PD, there are six Cavemen waiting in the wings. And who the hell wants to put on the next Cavemen?
I think the nets are realizing they need to try and figure out a way to capitalize on the shows that have rabid fan bases. Because there have only been two or three (and sometimes just one) hits a year developed over the past five years. If they sit around waiting for hits to take off out of the gate, they will be sitting around in the unemployment office. The new game in television isn't to launch a monster anymore. The new game is to take a solid average performer and see if you can entice more people to the table. See Criminal Minds, NCIS, House, Grey's Anatomy, etc. Most of the stuff in the Top 30 that are not reality shows are shows that took a year or two to get people into them. In some cases they took longer than that.
Hell, why do you think CBS brought Jericho back? Because they realized that they had a built in base to build upon. You can't just toss that away without at least trying to see if you can expand beyond it. After all, sixty tons of nuts can't be too wrong.
Life and Pushing Daises will likely be back next year. Hell, NBC probably is now wishing it had kept Studio 60 around.
Welcome to the 21st century, pisher.
TV peaked with St. Elsewhere, until Joss came along anyway.

don't think any of the Networks (at least the executives) smell like roses. Maybe like a rose bed before you plant the rose bushes and you want to ensure that they grow.

I'm actually pleased with KID NATIONS's numbers. I expected it to be totally pummled by SHREK but it didn't dip below 7 million
I agree ... I thought it actually held up pretty well considering....
dumont ... thanks for the sweeps report all month. If you have it handy, do you have the season-to-date numbers worked up with your sweeps numbers? ABC and CBS are one and two, but I was curious about FOX and NBC. According to this site FOX was third and ahead of NBC season-to-date, as of Nov 11th. http://tviv.org/Nielsen_Ratings
I hope ABC is enjoying its November victory -- for they're not going to see numbers like that again this season. Monday will plummet in the months ahead, as will Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday and Saturday are already in the losing column -- which leave Thursday and Sunday as the only bright spots in the schedule.
So far as its new shows, the returns are not totally in on "hits" PP, PD and SW -- any one of which could pull a Commander in Chief as the season progresses.
Originally posted by robert: DSM should be canceled by this numbers. Why ABC renewed this show is beyond me.
They renewed it because it consistently wins its timeslot among adults 18-34 which is an extremely lucrative demo.
I'm curious to know how DSM and PD did last night in that demo.
As for Gossip Girl, I seriously dislike this type of show, but there's no denying that its performance last night among adults 18-34 is good by the CW's low standards, based on the unbiased ratings report from Marc's competition. It got a 1.8 in that demo; by comparison Reaper drew only a 1.1 this past Tuesday, I'm sad to say.

I just realized something. You're laughing at PD losing so much of it's lead in, eh? It's lead in was The Grinch. Is The Grinch really something you would consider a compatible lead in for PD? Half the people watching the Grinch probably had to go to bed as soon as it was over.

I don't think anybody should be worried about its fate, unless they work on the show, and most of those people will find other jobs. I mean, once there are jobs again. C'mon, AMPTP, unbend.

A full season pick-up is not renewal, and it's very far from being a guarantee of renewal, as any Studio 60 fan can tell you.

But why not beat the lines?

Um, not for quite a while you won't.

Nor should you, since I'm doing great, and you probably need to talk to a shrink about that bridge thingy.

Newsflash: ABC could easily cut the order. Ask Bryan Fuller.

You are an infallible reverse barometer.

Change a few words, and this is exactly what the Veronica Mars fans were saying last year. Not this year.

Hell, why do you think CBS brought Jericho back?
Because it was actually a hit at one point. And btw, I don't think a handful of new eps ordered really qualifies as bringing it back. Digging up the corpse for an impromptu wake is more like it.

Life will be back every year. Not the show. And probably not human life. But single-celled organisms at least. You should feel right at home.
