Thing is, SW has been a really strong performer in its early weeks, and Marc doesn't tend to downgrade a show like that right away. He's giving it an honorable mention to underline the fact that it doesn't rate the winner's column.

Whereas PD has been out of the winner's column for most of its run to date (in spite of incredibly weak competition), and Marc finally felt obliged to point out its seriously deteriorating performance, relative to what it should be doing under the circumstances. It's had a very easy time in its regular timeslot, and should have built a bigger audience by now (and every show has to deal with the holidays, every year, so don't even try to trot that well-worn excuse out again).

Over and over, I see people misinterpreting Marc's little editorial nods, and looking for bias that just isn't there. I'm sure I do too, but I do at least try to understand what he's getting at, where he's coming from--it's an expectations game, a percentages game, and there are a lot of factors at work, that have to be balanced out. It's an art, not a science.

Once again, why do you need to answer for Marc? If he so chooses to ignore this forum as usual, then let it be. We don't need someone to speak for him. Capiche?

Actually the Italians spell it 'capische', but I usually spell it 'capish', and there's at least four more alternate spellings out there. Roll Eyes

I don't honestly see why it's okay for other people to assume they know what Marc means and disagree, but not for me to assume I know what he means and agree.

Why do you assume you are the only one who knows what Marc means? Can't people understand his opinion yet disagree with him?

I am beginning to think that you are, like, a paid intern of Marc's. Your job is to agree with every word he speaks, and to spark debate on the forum which keep posts up.

How much are you getting paid?

Wow--what a classic use of the old "When did you stop beating your wife?" ploy. Big Grin

Very true! And that's exactly what I did. I forgot to take out the 'h' AL had put in his version of 'capisce', when I corrected it.

But for the record, I don't speak Italian. I just didn't think AL's spelling looked right. And it wasn't. But in fact, there are six or seven commonly used spellings, though only one is actually in the Italian dictionary.

Man, are we bored or what? Big Grin

American Galdiator and OR on Monday is going to make for an awesome night of viewing. Too bad it is not on at 9 instead, it will be interesting to see how it does against Dance Wars. At least it won't be going up against AI.

SW and PD both had the same number in demo

they would have probably be also tied in total viewers had it not been that DWTS had 8 million more viewers than grinch

So it sounds like to me that its really about what it follows? Well if that's it and they were tied then by deduction shouldn't they be listed the same?

SW is a sitcom, up against by far the highest-rated sitcom on TV right now. It could not have been facing tougher competition.

PD failed to do as well in the 9pm timeslot, with a huge lead-in, as Private Practice typically does when it builds heavily on the poor lead-in PD provides. While Criminal Minds is the first real competition it has faced, you can't very well say both shows appeal to exactly the same audience, now can you?

And I remind you guys again--

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117976712.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

"ABC used Wednesday's holiday specs to lead into "Pushing Daisies" at a special time of 9 o'clock. Though it attracted new viewers under 35 and logged best-since-premiere scores overall (3.7/9, 9.99m), it couldn't match what "Private Practice" has averaged in the slot this fall.

And that opening helped other shows in the time period: CBS drama "Criminal Minds" won the hour (4.5/11 in 18-49, 16.23m) with its best scores since the conclusion of its post-Super Bowl seg last February; Fox's nonscripted frosh "Kitchen Nightmares" achieved highs (3.3/8, 7.03m); and CW's first-year series "Gossip Girl" (1.4/3, 2.93m) logged its second best scores to date."

Nobody was saying SW was helping the other networks.

It's generally accepted that TV shows are supposed to help the networks they air on.

Leaving work early today. Have a nice weekend. If at all possible.

Marc puts a lot of different thoughts into his category lists. For example, Samantha Who? is getting compared with the post DwtS shows in prior seasons while the most recent episode of Pushing Daisies is logically compared with that regular timeslot performance of Private Practice. Given everything that could be considered, his classifications for SW and PD are reasonable. The only big mistake he made is in calling Pushing Daisies out as 'fading fast' given that it gained several million viewers over last week. Hopefully, he has since whacked himself in the forehead and uttered a Homer Simpson 'D-oh' about the timing of that wording.

If he had, he'd have amended his report, as he commonly does, when he hears sound arguments in favor of doing so.

Let's see how PD does without the big lead-in, week after next. I think there'll be a lot of people hitting their foreheads, but Marc won't be among them.

Later!
