-Ratings Breakdown: CBS took this final Thursday of the summer season with ease, but not everything was overly rosy. The good news for the season-premiere of Survivor, now set in China, was a time period victory. But year-to-year, the 15.12 million viewers and a 4.9 rating/15 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. was down by a hefty 2.31 million viewers and 25 percent in the demo from the season-premiere of Survivor: Cook Islands (Viewers: 17.43 million; A18-49: 6.5/18 on Sept. 21, 2006, based on the final nationals). And this was opposite repeats of ABC’s Ugly Betty and the NBC comedies last night. That’s a disappointing start. As for the show itself, yes, I am already addicted. But at this point it just looks like the same old thing.
Survivor: China led into repeats of CSI (Viewers: 14.12 million; A18-49: 3.9/11) and Without a Trace (Viewers: 11.34 million; A18-49: 2.9/ 9), which dominated from 9-11 p.m.
The good news, meanwhile, over at Fox is compatibility, with the competitive Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #2, 8.21 million; A18-49: #2, 2.3/ 7) leading into 8.42 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 in the demo for Don’t Forget the Lyrics at 9 p.m. With growth for Don’t Forget the Lyrics out of 5th Grader of 26 percent among adults 18-49, it looks like Fox is finally on the Thursday map.
NBC’s repeat combination of a one-hour edition of My Name is Earl (Viewers: #3, 5.22 million; A18-49: #3, 2.2/ 7), The Office (Viewers: #4, 4.98 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 7) and ER (Viewers: #3, 3.94 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5) finished third overall for the evening. Next were repeats of ABC’s Ugly Betty (Viewers: #4, 4.69 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4), Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: #3, 5.55 million; A18-49: #4, 1.9/ 5) and Men in Trees (Viewers: #2, 4.36 million; A18-49: #3, 1.4/ 4). And last was a repeat of the CW’s Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #3, 1.79 million; A18-49: #5, 0.8/ 2) from 8-10 p.m.

Marc, you have the average for the CW at 1.79 million viewers, but for the repeat of Beauty and the Geek, you have the ratings at 4.71 million viewers. Which one is right? Thanks.

And again, we wonder why "Survivor" was not moved off Thursday nights. The show is still strong enough even now to stay on the lineup somewhere but there is just no growth potential there anymore. The CBS Thursday night lineup as a whole is very long in the tooth and should be revamped for midseason.

Dream On! CBS really has nothing else to put in either place. They like the old ways so much they're bringing back "Without a Trace" to its old slot.
But what I really want to know is: where are they finding these contestants who "have never heard of the show" and come on relatively unprepared? Chicken didn't know one bit about human relations and Courtney apparently lives in the NYC Sewer Syetem for all she knows.
But I like James the Grave Digger.

I agree that Survivor is fine where it is. I don't like the move of Without a Trace to Thursday. It is one of CBS' stronger shows and it should be used to anchor a night in the 9 pm hour.

Looks like there are a lot of people flipping from Survivor over to Lyrics. 5th Grader took a hit, and Lyrics had big-time demo growth. But the return of Survivor, even if disappointing, had a huge impact on the CSI/WAT repeats.
