THE UNOFFICIAL START OF THE SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN
This might be one of the highest HUT level nights in Labor Day TV history. Only PB seemed like it took a hit from the holiday and stiff male competition with Deal or No Deal, college football, and Raw.
For those of you that did not see Prison Break last night, it was the best in the series so far. I think word of mouth and the T:SCC lead in is going to help PB get back to the 8 million viewer range. Those numbers are disappointing only b/c it is far from their season 3 average, but good b/c it rose in the 9pm hour, which is its new timeslot. This is still a show that can bring in younger viewers so they got their money's worth last night.
Those are solid numbers for The CW, but still not good considering Smackdown pulls around 4 million viewers during the summer on a Friday night with baseball pre-emptions. Gossip Girl virtually had no young female competition to go against so it better had over 3 million viewers. One Tree Hill is still a strong player.
Deal or No Deal has gotten off to a strong start this season. Whoever said this series is dead, just wants it to be because DOND is still NBC's strongest player besides the NFL.
Tonight is the big night for The CW, this network will either stay afloat after 2010 or its going to be replaced by The WB who's rumored to be coming back if 90210 fails.

PB best ever. Come on. I said it was good but that's all. And what lead-in are you talking about. SCC will pull lower numbers than PB, my guess is 6-6.5 million for SCC, 7-7.5 for PB
Thought perhaps Gossip Girl would have a little bit higher ratings. When I was in Chicago I couldn't go two blocks without seeing ads for it. Although the number of Pushing Daisies ads probably outnumbered every other television show ads put together times 3...there were tons!
I really have no idea what to expect out of 90210. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit 7 or 8 million for the first hour just because of the buzz and name recognition. But I also wouldn't be surprised if only managed in the low 4 millions.
CW is banking on Gossip Girl and 90210 big time this season. Neither show will be cancelled. If they both tank it will be more likely that the network itself isn't around next fall.
I can't understand why The CW is pretending to be so excited by the GG premiere numbers. I mean, I understand it. They pretty much have to act that way or they're admitting failure. But the fact of the matter is GG had an entire summer's worth of advertising including that stupid Parents TV Council campaign and they pretty much drew the same numbers as One Tree Hill which is in it's 6th Season and had very little promotion.
They can't be "really" happy about that.
The press release Robert posted where the CW says the GG numbers are "mindblowingly good" is a riot to read.
Gleebo . . . do you really think the CW could draw 7 or 8 million for 90210? ANTM hasn't even hit that, has it? I was thinking more in the 4-5 million range for 90210 - and even at those numbers The CW would wet themselves with excitement.
PB has always been garbage. Beautifully dressed up actually scripted rather than reality garbage, but unrealistic garbage nontheless. Its redeeming value doesn't come from being a good show, but from being (ideally) entertaining.
That said, I also think that they will rebound once it goes more into the regular viewing season and they should pick up some more numbers from DVR. Very curious to see how SCC will be doing.
No, the 2008-09 season has not officially begun yet. But Fox’s Prison Break and the CW’s Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill opened new seasons last night. And NBC’s Deal or No Deal finally had the opportunity to award a contestant with the grand prize. On that note, NBC was dominant in total viewers, while Fox was No. 1 among adults 18-49.
NBC’s Deal or No Deal was the most-watched show of the evening, with 10.89 million from 8-9 p.m. It was also first in the hour among adults 18-49, with a 2.6 rating/7 share in the demo. While I understand why the network promoted a million dollar winner, doing so made the whole long-awaited event less suspenseful. That led into week two of reality/competition America’s Toughest Jobs at 7.33 million viewers (#1) and a second-place 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49. 9 p.m. Although that was virtually on par with it’s week-ago debut (Viewers: 7.30 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7 on August 25), retention for America’s Toughest Jobs out of the second-half of lead-in Deal or No Deal (Viewers: 12.64 million; A18-49: 3.2/ 8 at 8:30 p.m.) was just 58 percent in total viewers (and 84 percent in the demo).
The two-hour season-premiere of Fox’s Prison Break was a disappointment at 6.48 million viewers and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Compared to it’s already below-average year-ago opener on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 (Viewers: 7.51 million; A18-49: 3.3/ 9), that was a loss of 1.03 million viewers and 21 percent in the demo.
Marc,
Do you think, now that the $1 million prize has been awarded, "Deal" will start to decline? Also: I agree with you that the season started too soon. Probably a lot of people were just coming in from The Summer Place and didn't even know there was a new ep. of "Prison Break" and "Gossip Girl." Worse, maybe they didn't even have their DVRs set.
I am very surprised by the numbers of Prison Break. I get that last season was kind of pointless, but the episode was very good and the viewers just werent there. Maybe they would have been better off not telling everyone that Sarah was going to be back, and that might have generated some word of mouth..
But, I hope they give the show 22 episodes and then end it because I like where this season is going..
As for OTH, the answer to the cliffhanger was obvious and the episode wasn't that great. Hpwever, it is what it is, and its a solid show for the CW...
And finally, onto GG, which was an okay episode but wasn't as good as last year's premiere. The ratings did spike from last year, but with all the money they poured into promotions, they have to be disappointed. And with Chuck, Dancing With the Stars, Big Bang Theory, SCC on the way, I doubt that the ratings will go anywhere but down..
However, for the CW the real test is tonight. If 90210 doesnt get at least 4.5 million viewers, I think the CW is in trouble...

Well, the CW would have to purchase time on TBS/TNT. I would guess the CW doesn't have the Advert. budget to do that too often,if at all.

The 10 pm program for ABC was a special edition of '20/20', and I do think that is the lowest number I've seen from 20/20 ever before, thanks to High School Musical, which gave Sam Who zippo lead-in at 9 pm.
'Gossip Girl' and 'One Tree' were about what I thought they would do, and the female demographics are impressive, but lets put it in some context. 'Veronica Mars' got a 2.3 in W18-34 on several occasions, and even did better than that.
I must say I do enjoy watching 'Gossip Girl', one for the fabulous New York locations (not phoney baloney backlot New York like CSI: NY), but also for the savagely witty narration provided by The CW's reigning 'It Girl', Miss Kristen Bell.
Has anybody seen the overnight numbers for "Detroit 9000" on MyNetworkTV? I can see why it is a favourite of Mr. Quentin Tarantinos. Classic seventies urban crime drama.
Prison Break on FOX was pretty good last night. I think 21% of their audience just didn't watch it last night.
CW should become WB because Ostroff sucks as a programmer and most of those affiliates probably want The WB back. WB might even steal 90210 from right underneath them.

Veronica Mars was very lucky in its reign to have the likes of Top Model at its peak and Gilmore Girls for lead ins. Its because of those shows alone that it ever did that well. Gossip Girl tends to do that on its own and it never had Top Model at its peak or another strong CW drama for a lead in. Gossip generated most of the buzz on its own. If VM were leading off Mondays these days it would probably be lucky to have 2.3 million viewers, let alone a 1.5 in the female demos. For a bit of a refresher, here's the overnights to the series finale of Veronica Mars a year from last May:
And those weren't the only low rated episodes. The two Tuesdays before that were equally poor. May 15, 2007: 2.240 million viewers; 1.0/2 A18-49; 1.3/ A18-34 (following GG season high rated series finale) May 8, 2007: Viewers: #5, 1.88 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 2
Those numbers were all worse than Reapers new episode average this past year. They were also worse than some repeats of Reaper that aired against Idol. BTW, Reaper was almost cancelled if you happened to forget that. No matter how much they spin it, VM fans cannot outspin the cold hard facts that the show did not have the fans at the end when it needed them.
